Fedora :: Login Screen Gnome On LXDE Spin?
May 9, 2011I have installed a LXDE F14 spin into my laptop cause I its older, the thing is that I would like to use Gnome login screen, like where you choose your desktop management and insert your password. I have gnome installed as well..
PS. or can I just update LXDE to the version that comes with F15 (I looked to it quickly and seemed cool) without fresh install ?

Nov 13, 2010I have a laptop that is a little bit older, and OpenSUSE was running pretty heavy on it with the KDE and Gnome desktops (I installed Gnome, tried it for bit, then wiped it and did a clean install with KDE).
Since it was so sluggish on that laptop, I grabbed a couple live CD's of OpenSUSE with the LXDE and XFCE desktop environments. The XFCE disc doesn't seem to boot at all, which I tried in a couple different computers, and on Virtualbox with the same result.
LXDE worked fine and I installed it just fine, with hopes of switching over to XFCE later, as I like it better. This brings me to my question, can someone tell me what the easiest way is to switch from the LXDE desktop to XFCE?

I went there, I clicked on 11.3 on the right hand side, and then clicked on the 1-click install option for X11fce, the first option. It opens the YaST software manager and I followed the prompts, and it finished. All of the packages were installed, except XDM.
I was expecting that the software would install and configure the desktop, and I'd reboot to see an XFCE login. This was not the case.
what the correct, and safe way would be to switch desktops?

Apr 7, 2011I've borrowed a copy of 11.4 DVD install disc from someone at work, everything went fine install wise. Except Grub taking control, which I didn't ask it to, but easy fix with yast, problem is firstly my graphics resolution is wrong, but I'm trying to work that one out myself as it always seems to be happening with distros I use on my machine. The weird thing is my desktop blinks! Every 10secs or so the whole screen goes blank and then reappears? I thought it might be the wrong refresh rate, but that's at 60Hz which is correct, would it be the resolution problem?

I was trying to running diagnostic's from Opensuse, but the blinking was getting on my nerves and I'm not familiar with a non Debian based OS......yet! I've got compiz and all running on the hardware in my Ubuntu install after editing the xorg.conf, could I simply copy that to my Opensuse install?

After boot up the graphical login screen comes up fine but when I go to log in I get an error message and it asks me to try to login again. I need to be able to get into text mode so I can edit some files but I do not know how to do this other that starting in multi-uder mode by editing /etc/inittab (or in FC15, editing some links in /etc/systemd/system/). Fedora :: After Installing F13 LXDE Live: Unable To Login?
May 28, 2010After installing from the LXDE live CD I am unable to login. I type in my username, and then my password, and then the prompt goes back to the username (in other words, nothing happens). I can however login via the virtual terminals.
Could this be an issue with the live cd? Or was it just a bad install?

After the installation completed I tried to logout (from Gnome 3 shell) but couldn't. A notification appeared saying "cannot find gnome save session" or something similar. Then pressed ctrl+alt+F2 then used the reboot command as root. After booting the new looking login screen appeared but after typing my password when I tried to login it said "something has gone wrong" and the only option which I see there is logout.

SUSE :: Transparency In LXDE Also Shows The Login Screen Background
Nov 29, 2010So I have installed LXDE on my SuSE install to have a addition to the GNOME desktop. The installation went fine (of course). But I'm now faced with a problem with the transparency in LXDE, I have a box around my cairo-dock with a piece of my login screen background (looks like the well-known black-box bug. See Screen shot). This is a bit strange and I've been looking at the solutions for the black-box bug since I've had it before, but have not found a way to sort this yetv(though i have found many solutions for the black-box bug itself).
But, not only is this box around cairo-dock, the rest of the transparency in LXDE also shows the login screen background. See screen shot. Screen shot: [URL] As you can see, i haven't had time to work on the eye-candy yet.

OpenSUSE :: Gnome 3 - Shell Will Not Repaint After Login
Jul 12, 2011I've been having some problems and was trying to diagnose them. My graphics were going wonky at the BIOS stage (spots, letters changing colour, and even the very first screen of nVidia details swapping "version" for "versikn") so I went to try a new graphics card. Not long before I got my new graphics card, Gnome 3 really started playing up and did the "oops, a problem occurred" at every login. I created a new account and got the same behaviour. I swapped my GeForce 7950 out for a GeForce 7300 that I scrounged up. The spots and changing letters disappeared, so I knew that at least part of the issue was the graphics and not something else (e.g. motherboard or memory). I still got the "Ooops" screen, so I knew that wasn't caused by a bad response from the graphics card or anything.
I've since nuked the install (which started out as 11.4 RC1 with GNOME3:STABLE) and re-installed from a new download of the 11.4 DVD plus GNOME3:STABLE (in accordance with these instructions) with all of the updates. I can now log in without the "Ooops", but if I am using the proprietary nVidia drivers then the display won't repaint after a few seconds (long enough for Gnome Do to appear, but not long long enough for me to do anything else) - clicking on Activities or on the menu in the top-right doesn't seem to do anything. If I Ctrl+Alt+F1 then Ctrl+Alt+F7 to skip to a terminal and back then the cursor is still there, but the screen is blank.
If I swap to the Nouveau drivers then I can log in to Gnome Shell and it continues to render, but even simple things like dialogs folding down from the top of their parent window can grind along and take a few seconds to finish painting. That is on the 7300 rather than the 7950, but I haven't swapped the cards back as I'm still suspicious of how healthy the 7950 is. I've not seen anything that appears relevant in the XOrg log, but given that X will reboot and isn't completely hung then it could be a repaint bug more than an error. I've tried all of this with clean accounts with the same results, so it wouldn't seem to be any of the standard .gconf/.dconf etc folders.
OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Pass Gnome Login
May 10, 2010I'm having some trouble with Gnome's Login screen. What happens is that I type my username and password correctly, the login screen fades out and everything seems normal until the login screen appears again, I enter my username and password again and the login fades out only to appear again and again and again and so on.
Only the root user works with the login, and also if I use failsafe mode, then login in textmode and then use "startx" it works fine.
