I am using Fedora11/Gnome and I frequently use several windows for input. I would like to focus on a window just by moving the mouse over it (but not pop up). However, I can not find anywhere to set up this option.
View 12 RepliesI recall a partner in a CS class who changed my setup to focus a window on mouse over and that was really handy for programming with a ton of terminals open. I've seen Dwell Click under accessibility options, but that doesn't seem to do anything. I know that sometimes the GUI control applets have features undisabled that don't really do anything (i.e. WINS) if you don't have the right stuff installed. How do I get mouse over pretty much just simulate clicking the window.

One of those things that make yo go "WTF?" After browsing the internet with Firefox, there appears a peculiar problem: if I move the pointer to a certain area of the screen, I can't click (left, right, middle) nor use mouse wheel. The area can be of variable size, but usually it's small, in the lower part of the screen, it's x dimension greater than y one (a horizontally placed rectangle). The problem doesn't go away when I restart Firefox (obviously it does when I reboot). It obstructs any window under it (I can't even click on the desktop where 'it' is). It's as if there is an invisible window that 'steals' focus when I move the mouse over it. I'm on 11.04, Classic Ubuntu (Gnome 2.3x).
A quick UPDATE: dragging an icon and dropping it on the said area behaves as if I dragged an item and dropped it where it doesn't belong (i.e. it just slowly returns to it's original position). Also, I tried killing it with Force Quit applet, but only my desktop reloaded.
If I have Dolphin up and running, I will activate a folder, hit Enter, and nothing happens unless my mouse is moving around the screen.I may have Chromium Browser or Firefox running with another app, and when I use Alt-Tab to switch tasks, the app selector window will not appear unless I'm moving the cursor. And once I have chosen the app to switch to, it will not actually make the switch unless the cursor is in motion across the screen.I am running Kubuntu 10.04, KDE 4.4.2
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm hit with a very annoying bug: mouse clicks do not give focus anymore, focus stays trapped and sometimes right clicking the element that last had focus allows the next left click to move focus. I'm running wheezy with kde. Searching the web it I found no solution but it seems my problem is close to what is reported there:e issue: after alt+tab the window decoration changes as if the focus had moved to the new window but it stays trapped in the previous window. Rebooting does not fix the issue.I have nvidia graphics set up with dual screen through the nvidia drivers but this setup has been working good for several months, so I don't think it's related.

View 5 Replies View RelatedBiggest one that make game unplayable is mouse. Mouse isn't moving smooth it jumps around. I cannot shoot anything. So i asked for help, and everybody just say install windows. And where is fun in that. If people when ever run into problem with some software on linux just install windows. Linux would never go forward. I m not some great gamer, but i would like to be able to play this game. Probably somebody run into same problem. I sow that people talk about something like dis on WOW and wine but simptoms doesn't seem same to me.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAn ubuntu-11.04 laptop is set to turn on the screensaver after 5 minutes of inactivity, and power management is set to blank the display after 15 minutes of inactivity. When the screen goes blank, you're supposed to be able to move the mouse to return to your Gnome desktop. This works sometimes, sometimes not. When it doesn't, moving the mouse doesn't eliminate the black screen, although I can see the mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+del does nothing, neither do alt+tab, alt+esc or ctrl+alt+esc. ctrl+alt+f1-12 work as they usually do, so I can "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart" from one of the TTYs, or via ssh.
I tested just now with setting the screensaver and power management display blanking to 1 minutes. After a minute the screen went blank (backlight on), and then after a second or two black (backlight off), and moving the mouse returned to Gnome as it should. So I don't know why sometimes it doesn't. Two questions:
1- Which program can I run, or which service can I restart, to return to Gnome without having to kill gdm and lose all open windows?
2- What's causing this?
How can I change the window focus mode in compiz in F14? I prefer point focus rather than click focus, but the 'system -> preferences -> windows' cannot run in compiz environment.
Also, can I save the position of the terminal in compiz? I don't want to adjust the terminal positions manually after each logging in.
Openoffice.org apparently ignores the window manager altogether for questions of focus. This combined with opening lots of little dialogs and menus is making it almost unusable. (Over at openoffice.org, this has been answered with (essentially) "I use click to focus, so raising on focus is normal, so I'm putting at the lowest possible priority because it has nothing to do with usability.") The problem is that I use focus following the mouse, with click to raise. This is very convenient for copying between two windows and saves me a lot of time and energy, as I have to do this quite often. Current behavior, however, causes Openoffice.org to raise any window you happen to pass over, thus hiding the floating toolbar or dialog box that you were trying to click on. Worse, as the window you brushed by has gained focus, in most cases, the toolbar or dialog disappears entirely. The only solution is to move everything around so as to have a path to get to your toolbar/dialog without touching another window, or to minimize all but one openoffice document. Is there anyway to make Openoffice.org usable with this setting?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu desktop, since I had been running my server as Ubuntu Server on a guest OS on Windows 7 and never really used the Windows part of the computer. Since then, I've been unable to use the mouse in a graphical environment for longer than a few minutes without it starting to act crazy. The mouse moves around normally, but won't respond to clicks (left, middle, or right) but the keyboard shortcuts still work. I'm not sure if things have changed since I last used Gnome though, but Alt+Tab is not working for me either when this happens. Sometimes, the active window is even behind another window, and isn't pulled to the foreground.
After a bit of frustrated clicking and jamming of buttons on the keyboard, sometimes the mouse kind of starts working because I'll notice a right click menu open. But, I am still unable to move windows or click on them to bring them to the foreground, and my mouse presses only work on the current window. And then, eventually, after about a minute or so, it'll stop respond again too.
I saw in one thread that someone had dead spaces where he couldn't click, so he installed and ran Gnome and that fixed it, but I tried using Ubuntu Classic and it is still giving me the same behavior. I'm actually posting this message now in links, because I can't use Firefox or Chrome well enough when it's hidden behind other windows.
I love Sloppy focus (focus follows mouse) and "Don't raise windows on click" that Compiz support.So I am wondering, if Gnome 3 also have these options?

For example, if there is a video on the screen, the video will stop and glitch up if I am not touching the trackpad to make the cursor move around the screen. The second I start to move the cursor on the screen, however, the video plays again. Why?!

View 2 Replies View RelatedPypanel is a great lightweight panel for window manager users, but I'm seeing a problem for which I've been unable to find a fix, or patch. Unfortunately pypanel has been inactive with no further development for a number of years so it's not likely to see any new releases with a fix any time soon.
The problem is that when a new window is opened in most window managers, the new window gains focus by default, and it shows at the top of the window list. However, pypanel does not show the new window focused within the panel unless you click on the task button in the panel, or you click somewhere on the newly opened window. All the other panels that I've tried focus new windows immediately after they open by default, just like most windows managers do.
I've run across others having the same issue, but no fixes or patches found after many hours of searching. Would any of you happen to know of a fix, a patch, or a work around other than using a different panel application?
When I click and drag - Both Window Title Bars and text selection- the mouse acts as I have released the button and drops the click and the window/text selection is left in middle of nowhere.

However, compared to older versions the behaviour of focus-follows-mouse seems to have changed for the worse when using the keyboard to switch applications. In older versions, an app selected using alt-tab or scale or similar keyboard method would get focus, even if the mouse was not over it. Focus follows-mouse behaviour would only happen again if you moved the mouse to a new app. In 11.04, the app selected using alt-tab immediately loses focus if the mouse is not over it. This makes alt-tab kinda useless Is there any way I can fix this behaviour to the pre-11.04 version?

Often when maximizing an application from the launcher or opening them from the indicator area the application will have focus but will be behind the application I had open before. So if I would then close the window I see I actually close the application I had just opened as the menu area is for the new application.Example.
I am browsing using Firefox. I open X-Chat from the indicator area. I still see Firefox. I decide to close Firefox (or minimize) to get to X-Chat. All I end up in doing is closing (or minimizing) X-Chat because it had focus, the menu at the top was for X-Chat and not Firefox.This has had me launch and close many applications in error. The annoyance factor for this is ten.(Searched the forum but not being sure what the best search words for this issue would be I didn't find anything relevant)
My laptop is now running F15 and I'm so far satisfied execpt for one thing. As I expected, a problem with Mutter (Gnome 3 window manager) is 3D performance. Compositing window managers cause a serious hit in OpenGL applications. So: No playing 3D games.
On my desktop computer I use Compiz-icon's menu to quickly switch between Compiz and Metacity. I use Metacity during playing OpenGL games.
How could I do something similar in Gnome 3 without using the fallback mode all the time? Using scripts to start a separate X session for games might be a usable hack, but doesn't sound very appealing. I'm going to eventually upgrade my desktop's F14, but I think I'll wait at least until G3 gains a few more features.
