Ubuntu :: Unable To Use Mouse Or Switch Windows In Unity Or Gnome?

I recently installed Ubuntu desktop, since I had been running my server as Ubuntu Server on a guest OS on Windows 7 and never really used the Windows part of the computer. Since then, I've been unable to use the mouse in a graphical environment for longer than a few minutes without it starting to act crazy. The mouse moves around normally, but won't respond to clicks (left, middle, or right) but the keyboard shortcuts still work. I'm not sure if things have changed since I last used Gnome though, but Alt+Tab is not working for me either when this happens. Sometimes, the active window is even behind another window, and isn't pulled to the foreground.
After a bit of frustrated clicking and jamming of buttons on the keyboard, sometimes the mouse kind of starts working because I'll notice a right click menu open. But, I am still unable to move windows or click on them to bring them to the foreground, and my mouse presses only work on the current window. And then, eventually, after about a minute or so, it'll stop respond again too.
I saw in one thread that someone had dead spaces where he couldn't click, so he installed and ran Gnome and that fixed it, but I tried using Ubuntu Classic and it is still giving me the same behavior. I'm actually posting this message now in links, because I can't use Firefox or Chrome well enough when it's hidden behind other windows.

When working in an XP VirtualBox I can't use Alt-Tab to switch to my Linux Apps as VirtualBox captures the keys for Windows. So I tended to make a lot of use on the Application list on the old System Tray/Taskbar. I could click on the application's entry in the taskbar and that application would come up. When I needed to return to the Windows App, I clicked again and the application would then minimise so I can see the Windows app. Also I have been using the SUPER button in conjunction with 'E' to raise the Home Directory (just to keep it consistent with Windows).

I am using Fedora11/Gnome and I frequently use several windows for input. I would like to focus on a window just by moving the mouse over it (but not pop up). However, I can not find anywhere to set up this option.

Is there any way I can switch my desktop shell from unity to, say, gnome-shell? I can switch using other console shell I like (bash, csh, fish, etc.). Assume that there is a stable alternative desktop shell, I should be able to choose, too.
(For console shell, we goes to /etc/passwd. But for desktop, I can't find the way to config.)

it will have a 1TB HDD with Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. I want to reformat the drive and do some kind of advanced partitioning. I want to have 2 installs of Ubuntu11.04, that way I can have Unity AND Gnome 3. Is there a way I can partition it so they share the home and swap partitions? (2. / partitions, 1 /home and 1 swap) How would I do that?
I will also need 2 partitions for Windows 7 which I use for work. (No, I do not want to use VirtualBox) My Windows 7 cd creates a second system reserve partition. I don't know if this will make me run out of partitions. I hear you can only have a max of 4. My idea above has 4 partitions for Ubuntu alone.

I am currently using Debian 8.1 64bit with openbox as a WM. I have multi arch enabled. I remember also having this problem with Debian 7. I use nvidia graphics drivers over the nouveau as I would like the hardware acceleration. I have had this problem with two different "gaming" mice. But the mouse I am currently using is a Corsair M65 Gaming Mouse.

The matter of hand is about once a week my mouse tends to misbehave. I can move the mouse around but I cannot click on any windows or select any options by clicking. I cannot even right click on the desktop! I have tried starting X in another tty and the issue tends to persist shortly after starting X. The weird part is other days of the week the mouse works completely fine.
Having this problem in the first place, I have a snoop around and I learnt that I needed to create a config file for the mouse.
I have created a file in: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d named 50-vmmouse.conf with the contents of:

I have also tried putting the same data into an xorg.conf file, but alas the problem still exists.
Just to note, I have not tried using a basic mouse for a week, so I cannot pass any data on that. But I prefer the issue to be resolved with the mouse I enjoy using.
This is really frustrating as it stops me from using my system properly, the only solution tends to be to restart the machine. It would be nice for my mouse to work 100% of the time knowing it'll work.
Mouse misbehaves about once a week, tried different config files but no avail.

I'm currently running Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity. I have a recurring and irritating problem- sometimes when I switch windows using alt+tab, normally when the window that I have switched to is maximised, the window does not get re-painted until it has been resized. The window doesn't "freeze" as such as it still responds to keyboard and mouse events, but it doesn't appear to respond until it is resized.

Having just upgraded to 10.10, I've discovered Unity, and I'm afraid its not for me. I absolutely loved the previous interface, and was quite shocked and saddened to see it disappear. But I'd like to keep all the other new software that comes with 10.10. So my question is, can I install the old 10.04 beautiful interface to run on the 10.10 edition? Re-installation is a MS solution, that turned me on to linux in the first place!

Please excuse my ignorance, but I need to get it straight. I've been reading and trying to find out more about these three new desktop environments, but still am rather confused. I have had Unity on my netbook for a couple of months now and know it inside out (more or less by now). The problem is: what is the main difference between Gnome 3 and Gnome Shell?
To my understanding Gnome 3 will be a continuation of the panelled Gnome we are so used to? But then I read the panels will be gone forever, so I'm confused again Gnome Shell is somewhat similar-looking to Unity, but I haven't had a chance to try it properly yet.

I just installed Fedora 15 on a new laptop and I am using the Genome desktop. There are some applications that will not the allow you to resize the window. Some examples of this are Libre Calc, gnome-tweak-tool and a window in the package installer. In all these cases when you right mouse click on the top of the active window the "Resize ALT-F8" is grayed out and is not selectable.This is real problem when I'm trying to install the Perl-IDE-for-vim package because the list of dependencies is so long the confirm button is off the bottom of the screen and I cannot resize the window to get to it. There is also a similar issue with the tweak tool where some of the field are chopped off because the window is too small. As for Libre Calc I just don't like a window taking up the whole desktop.

I installed unity on ubuntu 10.10. when it first starts there is no problem ... but when I hover over any window the mouse gets stuck or at least REALLY slow that I cant control it. (I noticed also the keyboard does the same) some sites I searched suggested to remove unity application package and some other pack .. but it did not help. I use ATI (propriety drivers) on a Toshiba Laptop intel core i3, 3GB ram note that I downloaded gnome3-shell to try it but the exact same thing happened as unity.

I am using a netbook low on computer power. I don't have compiz installed and I don't want it.But I want to be able to switch between applications using the mouse.Expose style would be great but performance is paramount so if they were just icons or something that would be fine. is it possible to use the mouse to trigger alt-tab?(my netbook is often hooked up to my TV so keyboard is not always in reach)In Kubuntu I just had to move the pointer to the top left corner of the screen and an expose style effect would happen. But I believe that was compiz and I have moved to Ubuntu and found it much snappier.

Installed Debian 6 (latest stable, downloaded today) i386 under VMWare 7.1. Installed VMWare tools. However, when i activate Unity my mouse won't work at all in guest OS windows, it will only work as if i was pointing to guest desktop. It is all ok in Workstation window.
Unfortunately, there is no xorg.conf, and when i attempt to re-create it using Xorg -configure, the resulting file is unusable, i.e. system freezes when i test it (using X -config /root/xorg.conf.new) and if i just cp into /etc/X11/ GDM fails to load, and manually typing startX in command prompt i get "fatal error no screens detected".

I am running 10.10 Netbook Edition. I added Terminal Server Client to the Unity Menu and I typically run it in Full Screen mode to manage serveral windows based servers. The problem is that TSC displays perfect in full screen (unity tool bar hidden) but when i move the mouse over to the left side of the screen i get the pop-up text balloons from the unity below it. I cannot click on any items along the left edge of the remote desktop window including the windows start key. I want to confirm if this is a bug? and how to report it if so.

Will 11.10 have Unity or Gnome 3 or something else?Just a simple question. Right now I'm running 11.04 but I don't use unity I use gnome classic. I've used Gnome3 in a Fedora installment before I went back to Ubuntu and it was pretty nice. I've read a lot of stuff and as far as I could gather people don't like unity, so I would think they would switch back to something.

(Running Ubuntu 11.04, 64bit) After a mad frenzy of attempts to fix a broken compiz profile of Unity it seems that Unity now runs on top of gnome when I boot into the Ubuntu Classic option. This makes for a mix of problems and is obviously not intended operation. Is it possible to correct this? Even by a radical reinstall of both the Gnome and Unity desktop environments?

In KDE I'm using KWin as windows manager and somewhere in the configuration I defined that KDE should rotate the desktop cube to the left or the right each time I move my mouse pointer to the far left or right of the screen.If I keep it there for about a second it rotates the desktop cube to the next desktop.I once activated this but find this very frustrating when I'm trying to reach buttons on the same side. So I want to disable this feature but I can't find it anywhere. I can't remember where that option was that activated this feature.

I recently installed Linux Mint 8, which is an amazing distribution.I can get everything to work perfect, but I cannot figure out how to make the mouse wheel change desktops in compiz. Also, make sure that it only changes desktops when the mouse is over an empty desktop because I got it working once but the mouse wheel would change desktops all the time, even when I was trying to scroll through a webpage or document.

I recently added the ubuntu netbook edition to my desktop via ubuntu software center.
I have found that when using any theme I installed for Gnome, it only changes a few aspects of the desktop, like the window border is always the ambiance window border.
way to get my Equinox Gnome theme to work in the netbook edition.

I installed 11.04 on a Dell inspiron 1420. When I logged in I got an error message (lack of hw) so Gnome was loaded. Then I installed the nVidia drivers. Now, how do I start unity ? If I select "ubuntu" in the splash screen I still get Gnome.
