General :: TCSH - How To Disable Spelling Correction Of Command

Aug 18, 2010

Recently, when we updated our OS, we got a new tcsh feature enabled by default. Whenever I type a command that tcsh doesn't recognize, I get an annoying spelling correction like:
% cats
CORRECT>cast (y|n|e|a)?

I want to disable this feature and allow misspellings to error out like:
% cats
cats: Command not found.
Is my enter key somehow getting re-bound? What could be causing this?

Ubuntu :: Bash Broken, Lost Functionality In Terminal (gnome-terminal)?

Dec 10, 2010

Linux-goers. I did some research on this, but I am still fairly new to Linux. In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I accidentally overwrote my "/bin/bash" file. Dude, using "sudo" with a small typo can work disasters. Bash is now broken in the Terminal (gnome-terminal). Terminal itself still works fine, technically, but bash is still hosed/broken. Here is what I did to try to fix it: Booted from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD. Mounted my Ubuntu partition and manually copied the good/fresh "bash" file onto my hard drive. Verified copy was successful. Didn't help, as you see. Reinstalled "gnome-terminal" using synaptic package manager. Tried to reinstall bash via synaptic, it failed with error, "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_4.1-2ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"

In Terminal, all basic commands work as far as I can tell. ("ls", "pwd", navigation, etc.) Here are some problems:My "username@computername" does not display in the prompt; only the $ sign. Bash keyboard shortcuts such as uparrow and tab do not work. Instead, each inserts a key code. I can't even move the cursor left/right. Aliases (a function of bash and .bashrc) are broken, of course. My sanity level decreases when I use Terminal now. For what it's worth, even with "sudo" I get a "permission denied" error when trying to run Google Chrome! I read something about a ".bashrc" file being a possible problem, but I don't know how to make it work, or the file's proper locations in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there something I can do with a "make" or "apt-get install" command or something?? Could this simply be a permissions problem? Is the link to "/bin/bash", "/bin/sh", or a ".bashrc" file broken? Guide me, oh Linux gurus.

P.S. I always wondered what exactly bash was and how it was different from the basic terminal. LoL, this is an excellent way to demonstrate the difference, and I WANT IT BACK!

Security :: REDHAT Missing Functionality - Force User To Change Password On Login?

Mar 16, 2011

I have now been trying to find an answer for the following for a while and can't seem to get anything. On previous linux distros we had the option available "passwd -e" which allowed us to force the user to change their passwords upon the next login.s functionality however seems to be excluded from latest linux distros (currently using RHEL 5.4)...Does anybody know how the same effect can be achieved and perhaps any idea on why this option was removed as it was great for securing passwords

Fedora :: Auto-disable Touchpad When Mouse Is Plugged In?

Oct 17, 2010

this issue has been bugging me for years. I want the same capability in Fedora that exists in most recent versions of Windows -- disable the touchpad on my laptop if an external mouse is plugged in. Note that my how-to is a little hardware-specific regarding the actual disabling of the touchpad; I'll discuss that more at the end of the guide.

So, here goes: For my OS (Fedora 13 x86_64) and hardware (Dell Precision M4500) - I needed a specific utility and three scripts. This Dell's trackpad and nipple-stick are seen as an 'internal' PS/2 mouse by Fedora, so I had to install 'xinput' to disable it.

Fedora :: Nautilus Viewer - Disable Image Auto Rotate?

Nov 5, 2009

I've noticed in Gnome pretty much all applications auto-rotate images when viewing, but leave the original image data intact. This may sound silly, but when I want to post pictures on, for instance, Facebook they upload as the picture was originally taken. So, if I took a picture with the camera flipped sideways it appears upright in Nautilus and the two image viewers I have installed, but when I upload the picture it appears to be flipped on its side. Does anyone know how to disable the auto-rotate when viewing feature?

Fedora :: Disable Auto Open Nautilus When USB Drive Plugged?

Aug 4, 2011

In Fedora 15, when I plug a USB drive, Nautilus will automatically open and show whats inside of it. I'm working in a project where I have to plug and unplug USB drives many times, and Nautilus opening every time is really annoying. I tried to use gconf-edit and set the keys apps>nautilus>preferences>media_automount and media_automount_open to false, but it didn't work.

Fedora :: Prevent Terminal Escape $ Sign In Auto-complete F15?

Jun 15, 2011

I just installed F15 and although different, I like it a lot. One thing I don't like, however, is the default auto-completion of environment variables in the terminal. In F14 and older, if you type for instance

Code:

ls $HOME and hit TAB, auto-complete will list the contents of $HOME to search deeper, so to say. But in F15, the terminal automatically escapes the $ sign. If you do the same as above, you get

Code:

ls $HOME

instead of

Code:

ls /home/benny/

how to change the auto-complete settings of the terminal so that $'s are not escaped anymore?

CentOS 5 Server :: Disable Application Monitoring In Redhat Cluster

Dec 22, 2010

I have added apache application into redhat cluster. If the apache process failed, it will cause the service group fail over. I want to disable the application monitoring. I search throung Internet and it depends on the apache init script. If I change /etc/init.d/httpd status always return 0(success). THe service group will not fail over even apache failed.

However, I want to remain the application monitoring but stop failover. If the application like apache failed, I want Redhat cluster to try restart the application like 3 or 4 times. If restart failed, it will not failover.

Ubuntu :: How To Disable Auto-maximize In 11.04

May 1, 2011

Just upgraded to 11.04 and this drives me nuts. When an app/window is opened, if it is "sufficiently" large, it maximizes. I use eclipse. Eclipse is a screen-space hog, however I still need to be able to see other windows and the application bar around the edge of the eclipse window. Unfortunatly Unity(?) is fighting me on this set up because every time i relaunch eclipse, it becomes maximized even if I, the user, have explicitly un-maximized it.

How can I disable this auto-maximize behavior.

Ubuntu :: Disable Auto Mount Of Partitions?

Jan 9, 2010

I just installed kubuntu 9.10 and noticed that several partitions (fat32 and ntfs) are mounted automatically after I login. I searched /etc/fstab but found no entries for those partitions. So I guess there may be something like start-up scripts that automatically detect and mount all partitions on the hard disk at boot/login. Does anybody know the location of those scripts (if any)? I want to disable that auto mount.

General :: Clock Correction In GNU - Crontab?

Oct 20, 2010

My laptop's clock (Acer Extensa 5220) seems to be slow. I've corrected it 5 minutes forward last week and now have just corrected minute forward again. Is there a program [apart from time servers] to correct clock properly, for example, by shifting it a bit every hour? Is there already a program to put it to crontab or I should hack up a script? Or I should check more things?

I have found that HW clock is right, but system time is slow: about a second each 2.1 hours.
root@vi-notebook:~# dmesg | egrep 'clock|unstable'
[ 0.103785] Switching to clocksource tsc
[ 0.265274] Marking TSC unstable due to TSC halts in idle
[ 0.265514] Switching to clocksource acpi_pm
[ 1.321408] rtc_cmos 00:09: setting system clock to 2010-10-30 00:10:48 UTC (1288397448)
Is placing "hwlock --hctosys" to crontab a right thing?
