Is it any way of activating my wireless without using the external switch of laptop (currently broken)?
If yes how can I memorize this action so that each time I boot it will be automatically open?
I am using Ubuntu 10.10. In previous versions wireless was always activated.
This must be a repost, but I still want to ask, how do I activate the wireless on my laptop? I've been given advice about this a while back, but forgot. Just reinstalled a fresh copy of 9.10
Or is there an alternative way to do this?
I'm in the process of setting up my parents' HP G60-630US laptop with Ubuntu 11.04 Natty. Installation went fine, but now I am trying to get the wireless set up and am encountering an annoying problem: The wireless drop down menu will not allow me to enable wireless because "wireless is disabled by hardware switch". When I try to turn on the wireless via the glowing orange wireless button above the keyboard nothing seems to happen.
When I enter rfkill list in terminal, it returns the following:
0: phy1: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: yes
1: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN

I'm not really sure what this output means. I wasn't able to find any threads the addressed this issue specifically. If there is a quick and easy solution to this issue, or if this is a known problem with no solution, I'd like to know either way.
p.s. if it helps, lspci -v lists the wireless card as: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)
I recently switched from windows xp to ubuntu and have been very impressed so far. However, I've run into a bit of a problem. My laptop has a switch on the side that enables or disables the wireless card and every now and again its inevitable that someone accidentally switches it off. View 1 Replies View RelatedI am looking for a way to switch quickly and easily between my Laptop Display and my External Monitor, in Windows I had it configured so that when I plugged my Monitor in it would switch to that and when I removed it it would switch back to Laptop Display. From what I have tried it looks like this isn't possible with Linux, but I would like to get to the stage when I can click an icon to switch (or 1 to go to External and 1 to go to Laptop) My Laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series Graphics Card and I have so far noticed the following issues.
1. If I use the Gnome Monitors instead of ATI Catalist Control Centre it seams to cause some strange issues include confusing Linux on what the max screen res supported by my External Monitor is.
2. When I try and enable/Disable either Display or change Resolution, I am told that I have to reboot before the changes take affect.
I don't know if it sounds weird but I've been trying for weeks with no result. I want to plug my external monitor through my laptop's vga plug, close the lid and work on my monitor instead of the laptop's monitor. I looked through the gnome power management settings and when the laptop lid is closed it can only suspend, blank screen, hibernate or shutdown. I can plug my monitor and I have clone displays and it works fine but I can' find a way to shutdown the laptop screen without shutting down the vga outlet. Its a brand new Acer aspire 5734Z with a 15,6 inches screen (wich is why I want to plug in my 19 inches monitor and work on bigger screen)

The main problem I am having at the time is the wireless button will not turn on so there for I have no internet access. The switch works fine in windows, but not in ubuntu. The switch didn't work with the live cd either, but I thought it might after install. The wired card that is in the laptop is no good and quit working a couple of years ago so all I have is wireless now.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to get a netgear wireless usb card to work correctly. I have installed ndiswrapper and gotten the correct drivers installed. The device does show up with lsusb. I can't seem to figure out how to get the wireless card to show up in gnome to start using it.
Update: the ndiswrapper module does load but when i run ndiswrapper -l it just shows the driver installed but, it is not showing my wireless usb card (0846:9020).
I'm fairly new to Ubuntu. I'm struggling to enable wireless on my Acer Travelmate 2480. Wireless was turned on and off in Windows with a button which does nothing in Ubuntu.I think I must be missing drivers or something, but how do I get them if I can't connect to the internet?

I have an HP Pavilion dv7-1243cl laptop. It has an internal wifi that works ok at home but when I'm traveling I stay at RV Campgrounds the wifi signal gets pretty weak. So I Installed an external antenna.(ALFA model AWUS036H). The signal gets a full 5 bars.
Now the problem. I dual boot OS11.3 and Windows 7 pro. Everything works as expected on MS. When In boot to OS11.3 I can only connect to the internal antenna. (real spotty). If I turn off the internal antenna I can't connect to the external one. Knetwork manager show/detects and shows the strength of both of the signals only when the internal is on. On MS7 I can turn off the internal and it will connect to the external one with no problem. Is there anyway to get OS to allow me to connect to my choice of antenna? I've been into manage connections and selected wlan1 (external). no joy.

it worked fine, and fixed the black-box bug in cairo-dock, and i finally had a nice graphic bootscreen again.
but another bug occured: im running dual-screen setup, my notebook is connected via vga to a dell 22 inch widescreen TFT.
by default both screens running with 60hz and no problem.
now, after activating KMS it happend that, while the dell monitor still ran 60hz, the notebook screen was running with 61hz! it was shown in the monitor-options.
the notebook monitor was therefore flickering a bit for 5 seconds, than running fine for another few seconds. then flickering again. (obviously, as 61hz is too much when it should run with 60hz!)
so my question is: how can i activate KMS again and have both of my screens running with 60hz again? is there an option?
I've been having problems with connecting to my router with my wireless card. Sometimes knetworkmanager attempts to the connect to my wireless via it's saved profile but it just stays on "Activating" for about 45 seconds then just stops. This only started happening a few days ago, so maybe the new kernel update has something to do with it?
I've tried to debugging the problem myself and have found if I reboot my router knetworkmanager can connect immediately to the wireless router, but also something interesting I found was is I assigned a IP Address and DNS manually on the saved profile it would connect with no problem (No reboot of router required), so it is indicating there is a problem with getting network settings. I've confirmed that the wireless card is not hard or soft blocked through rfkill.
I was using the box standard ath5k driver when this problem started happening and even went as far as a complete reinstall but ironically enough on first boot from a fresh install my wireless could not connect with the problem described above. I've since moved to the compat-wireless drivers but the problem remains.
I checked a couple of logs, one log file of significance was the wpa_suppliment log which was full of these messages: From all my debugging I can only assume that the kernel update is a possible cause for all of this as the problem occurring on first boot of a fresh install sounds like a general bug. I just installed it on my desktop. I love it so far, but I'm having trouble setting up a network in my apartment. I have the desktop directly plugged into my router and a mac laptop linked wirelessly to the router. I also have a printer and an external hard drive plugged into the desktop. The goal is to be able to access the external hard drive and use the printer from my mac laptop, as well as access the mac laptop from the desktop.
Right now, I can access the mac from the desktop with ubuntu on it. Under "Places" and then "Network," I can mount the folders I want and then access the contents.
I can also print and access my external hard drive from the ubuntu desktop.
However, on the mac laptop in the Finder under "Network" there is nothing. I can ping the desktop from the mac and get a response, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get beyond this. In System Preferences I have "File Sharing" and "Printer Sharing" both checked.
I've had a host of problems since upgrading to 11.04 Natty Narwhal, so let's deal with these 1 at a time.
I've got a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion G60 laptop. Next to the power button is a handy wireless on/off button. This has always worked well with previous editions (9.04,through 10.10). first press toggles the wireless off, second press toggles it on.
Not so in 11.04. The toggle off works great, first time. But, it will not toggle back on. Not after any number of tries, not after restarting, not after booting into other OS's (9.10 and Vista) re-enabling it there and then booting back into Narwhal. to further complicate the issue, this feature bypass the network manager, so toggling the wireless off by the switch leaves me showing no wireless adapter in the network manager. I also restarted, switched from Unity to a Gnome session, but the issue still persists.
As my only network options are wireless, this has become a substantial inconvenience.

EDIT: so the network util is actually saying "wireless disabled by hardware switch". Also noticed it I enable it in 9.10, reboot to 11.04 (where I inevitably fail to re-enable it), then reboot into 9.10, it will initially be disabled. The key difference is in 9.10 I have the ability to enable wifi using the hardware button. It seems that 11.04 is remembering that wireless is disabled between boots. Is there a place it might be storing this value? If so, I may be able simply to set the value as enabled, since toggling that silly button isn't working.

I just installed 10.10 on my HP dv2700 laptop and I can't get the wireless card to turn on. Here are some of my results. I get the same results regardless of which position the wireless switch is in and the indicator light always indicates that the wireless is off.

I am new with Linux and I am trying to figure out how to get my wireless working. My wireless LED does not switch on and it also does not work. In some threads I have seen people post some outputs of command from the terminal. I do not know how to copy this because I can not use ctrl + c in the terminal.

Ever since I have tried it, I can only connect to the internet on a wired connection, but no wireless.

im having problems connecting mybook 2 with my laptop. Everything was ok and running perfectly and there was no changes in my laptop or upgrades and it stop working. I was not able to see the computers in my network then I fixed it I can see them but when I try to browse the files the OS tells me that is unable to mount location and failed to retrieve share list from server. The funny part is that if I go to Places>Connect to server and type my mybook ip address, my laptop can connect and I can browse the files. I really dont know what is the problem. My firewall is down so I dont think that is the problem. If anyone can help me with these because I know im able to connect to my mybook but i am unable to connect to any other laptop or my WD-Tv live.

And still have no wifi, when I click the icon in the menu bar it says under "Wireless Networks": "wireless is disabled by hardware switch", which ins't true because on my Vostro 1520, there is only one switch and it is in the on position. During natty installation (it was a fresh one) i had ticked for third party installations but had no internet running at that time. now the additional drivers under hardware in system settings shows nothing. just blank. NO MATTER WHAT I DID I HAVE COME TO THE FIRST STEP AGAIN. Just installed ubuntu 11.04. It told me a driver was missing and installed the Broadcom STA driver. I believe it went on line after that, but I restarted and its not going back online.
Also according to 'rfkill list all' my wifi seems to be hard blocked.

I've been wondering lately about what would be the best approach to take concerning WiFi on my laptop (or laptops in general) ? Understand my question concerning this is ONLY about performance and no other issue.
What is the better thing to do:
a) install a new (better) WiFi card inside my laptop,
b) remove the card inside my laptop and use a WiFi USB stick,
c) remove the card inside my laptop and use a WiFi PCMCIA card?
Is simply being external to the laptop going to give me better performance in terms of locating and using a WiFi connection? On the laptop I'm currently using I know that merely rotating the laptop can boost the connection signal strenght by 15% or more. So, I'm really wondering about this. btw, I'm seriously giving thought to glueing a 3 or 4 inch lenght of 1/2 inch pvc pipe to the lid of my laptop as a holder for a homebrew parabolic WiFi dish. The idea is to attach the USB WiFi stick to a piece of coat hanger wire. Then slide the bottom and top of the coat hanger wire into a piece of paper (that's had aluminum foil glued to it) forming a parabola behind the WiFi stick. By rotating the parabola in the pvc holder I can instantly directionalize the reception/transmission of the Wifi USB stick. I'm wondering if anyone in the forum has experienced the difference between an internal vs an external WiFi device? Secondarily, has anyone in the forum tried the parabola trick?
I have a thinkpad using the iwl3945 driver (Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG/BG Network Connection driver for Linux, 1.2.26ks).
This worked flawless until I upgraded to 10.04. Now after a while my connection drops. Syslog is appended.

I have two laptops and a desktop. At any given moment I would like the desktop to be able to download a file over WAN at maximum speed while one laptop does the same over wireless and the other laptop shares files either wired through a gigabit switch or wireless over wireless G or N. Is this too much to ask from a router/switch/wireless AP combo unit with a single processor? I'm thinking it's at least a lot. What if I ran the modem into the WAN connection of a good router. Then connected a separate wireless G/N access point and gigabit switch to the LAN connections of the router? That seems to me like it would relieve some of the bottle necks I would encounter with the scenario described above AND allow me to upgrade each unit as needed.

What happens is that when there is a lot of wireless activity the computer freezes. It is a complete freeze, the mouse stops moving, if something was coming out of the speakers it keeps echoing, and the only solution is to turn off the computer. The bug seems to coincide with the one listed in here

My wireless card is Intersil ISL3890/ISL3886. My whole computer is an HP z555. I'm thinking that is should be a bug in the wireless adapter driver, which is p54pci. The only solution I can think of is to blacklist it and set up ndiswrapper. I am not very comfortable with this solution since a native linux driver should be better than ndiswrapper.
