Ubuntu :: Indicator Applet Shows Nothing, Shutdown/restart Broken?
Jul 20, 2011For reasons that I do not understand, the xfce indicator applet has stopped working. It's not visible, so I cannot see thinks like the wireless applet.I can't find anything from searching the net.I suspect that it has something to do with dbus.Perhaps it's related, but whenever I choose to shutdown or restart, it now goes back to the GDM login screen instead. I've had this problem before on earlier Ubuntu distros, but I don't remember how to fix it.

May 12, 2011In my top right corner I got all my Ubuntu appindicators that come with Ubuntu 11.04. I also have Dropbox, caffeine and screenlets. Problem is that I cant click on dropbox, caffeine, battery indicator, wlan or sound indicator until I first click on messages menu and slide over to appindicator that I need. When screenlets appindicator is not present there is no problem. Its the same when I had Jupiter installed.

Mar 16, 2011After a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 I uninstalled empathy (im using skype). The empathy menu in the evolution indicator was gone after that.I also uninstalled gwibber. But the gwibber status indicator remains within the about-me panel... Uninstalling the gwibber package also removes the me-menu which I want to keep actually. Especially the shutdown/restart... part of it. See attachment.I know there is a shutdown panel-app...but its butt-ugly and it doesnt allow to logon/off.
In another thread I read that the gwibber status shouldnt be there if no account for it is configured... which it is not... I do use ubuntu-one though which is in the same menu... I saw that this issue was addressed at some bug report before, but not fixed yet...
Does anybody know a good workaround to get rid of the gwibber status in the panel while keeping the about me and the shutdown button?

Aug 31, 2010I have a 3 year old laptop with the original battery and its drained pretty bad. The "Battery may be broken" popup was driving me insane and this is how you disable it, in case you are in the same situation as me. Open terminal

Drill down to...
apps --> gnome-power-manager --> notify
uncheck the low_capacity checkbox. This should disable the popup for you if your battery has little life left in it. Now, if any knows how to disable the Avahi popup, let me know.

Dec 3, 2010As this was my first Debian installation with a 500gig drive, I chose to use the defaults. Debian announced that it was going to format the drive as EXT3, and commenced,I waited 3-4 minutes and only saw a very steady on disk active light. I presumed that the format should have ended sooner, and therefore, believing that the installer was in a loop, I rebooted and retried the installation again.
This time I let it run for the full duration, about 6-7 minutes (I also have a terabyte drive), for Debian, and after the longest time, the installer proceeded to the next step. The drive format was not in a loop.With todays large disks costing under $75.00 per terabyte, it makes sense to put a propellor or other indication on the text or graphic screen to show that the installer is really working at formatting. My screen showed an unchanging bargraph pegged at 31%.

Oct 15, 2010on a Powerbook with 10.10 installed. The battery icon doesn't show up in the indicator area next to the sound volume when I'm unplugged unless I select to have the icon displayed even when my computer is plugged in. And even then, it doesn't show current battery charge.I have added pmu_battery to /etc/modules , and /proc/pmu/battery_0 has relevant information on battery charge, and emacs seems smart enough to know my battery level.I tried to install pmud, and but that conflicts with pbbuttonsd and removing that would remove ubuntu-desktop! :O (I would like to try pmud and pommed, as those seem to have a better feature set than pbbuttonsd.)

Mar 4, 2011I have had this problem with all installations of Maverick Meerkat. Moving the default clock from the upper panel to the lower panel makes it bahave strangely. When clicked on, it now appears in the middle of the screen (sometimes even higher depending on resolution). This never happened prior to Maverick Meerkat.
How do I go about to fix this strange bug?

May 17, 2011So I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior

Mar 23, 2011I have the follwoing fenomenan. In my /etc/fstab I have an entry to automatically mount my NAS. Here is my entry:
192.168.1.10:/mnt/array1/My_NAS /media/My�40NAS nfs _netdev,
auto,rw,hard,users,intr 0 0
When my laptop boots it successfully mounts the NFS NAS and I get an icon "My NAS" on my dekstop that points to the NAS. If I double click on the icon it opens my file browser and I can browse thru my NAS fodlers.
What I see on the left hand side of the file browser is that I have to entries for My NAS. One of it has a button to shows that it is mounted and the other does not.
If I go to Places I also see 2 entries for "My NAS". One of it takes me to browsing the NAS and if I click on the other it says "Unable to mount ... busy or already mounted". Which makes sense.
Ubuntu :: Gnome Panel Language Indicator
Aug 5, 2010I changed the language on my 10.04 install to Canadian English, but now I have this icon in the Gnome panel that allows me to switch from USA to Can. I live in "Can" so have no need to see it displayed and have no interest in using American English so I have no desire to see that displayed. How can I have the system speak Canadian English and only that with no button on the panel letting me know what language I'm using?

Nov 4, 2010I accidentally removed the wireless internet indicator from my panel. I looked up the problem and the best I have come up with is how to get it back TEMPORARILY, using terminal. When I type in "nm-applet", in terminal, it brings it back, but if I close terminal, it disappears with it. So, I have to essentially keep the terminal window, or lose the internet. It blows my mind that such a simple thing is taking so much effort and inquiry.

May 19, 2010I have my internet connection via a wireless USB adapter and that works fine. Recently I connected my pc (Ubuntu 9.10) through a wired switch to my modified xbox so I can watch my videos in my office. I can share my content with my xbox (except for the items on my external USB HD's - I am working on that and will post that question elsewhere) but when I have my PC's wired connection plugged into the switch I can not surf the web or check email. It gets stuck at resolving host and then times out. If I disconnect the pc from the switch it sometimes connects before it times out. Usually it is quicker if I reboot without the wired intranet connection.
