I'm not even sure where to start trouble shooting this. All I can tell you is that ksoftirqd starts using 100% cpu. It either happens immediately after a resume (about a 50 % chance), or at some random interval (anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours after a fresh boot).
View 1 RepliesI recently completed a scratch install of Fedora Core 14 64-bit onto a system, and while everything appears to be running properly, I noticed there are almost 300 processes running at a given time on the server. The top command indicated there were ten-plus instances of the watchdog, migration, and ksoftirqd daemons running on the system. I am not familiar with these services, so I wanted to know what they are, and is there a need to have this many instances of each running on the system?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 on a Hyper-V virtual machine and a few hours later discovered that the server was unusually sluggish. Top revealed that ksoftirqd was sucking up around 97% CPU. Reading up on the issue focused on earlier kernel issues, which I knew didn't apply to 10.04. I eventually discovered that I set two CPU cores in Hyper-V. Decreasing this to just one CPU solved the issue.

Whenever I open an open office.org document from a cifs/SAMBA share as I navigate through it my laptop will lock up, and by lock up I mean so bad that I can't even move the mouse. If I let it sit for anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes it will come out of it. Trying to navigate through the document again will trigger a similar episode.
I finally got fed up and opened a terminal with top and set it to always on top, then I opened my samba share, opened my spreadsheet. and proceeded to trigger my problem. When the lockup happened it was so bad and so quick that top stopped updating and I wasn't even able to see something creep up in CPU usage. As it came out of it top started updating in bursts, first ksoftirqd/0 was at 100%, then that dropped to near nothing, then xorg spiked to 100%, then the system returned to normal.
I googled around an found lots of speculation, and bug reports that were way above my head. Some of the speculation suggested it was a kernel issue, but that has supposedly been fixed. Another forum post said that it was a multi-processor issue. (the guy was running it in a vm so he just removed the vCPU) And yet another suggested a network issue/attack. I am running a Dell Latitude D620 with a dual core Intel proc and a Broadcomm network card (wired) and an Intel wireless card. I have all the latest updates. The shares I experience this issue with (only shares I really use) are on a Netapp and are active directory integrated (my laptop is not joined to the domain)
I've installed F12, updated to today. I've set it to boot to runlevel 3. That works. If I run startx, X starts - I see the mouse cursor and the blue/green background. But no panels. No desktop icons.
I tried switchdesk kde, then startx. Same thing. Except kde is running because if I right-click on the desktop, I get a kde dialog that allows me to start an app.
Tried switchdesk gnome. Same thing. Rebooted, same thing.
Where can I put a script so that it'll be run whenever gnome starts but not kde? I tried creating a file called .gnomerc in my home directory but that didn't work. I'd prefer to be able to do it without the "Startup Application" interface.

Sometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection.It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

Brand new clean install of F12. On boot the network starts and grabs an IP from my DHCP server and will return pings, however, as soon as the logon window starts "all" network activety is stopped.
I have tried deactivating the NIC, then enabling again, (doesn't get an ip at this point), turning off the firewall, managing the network with & without network manager enabled, selinux off...all makes no difference.
My adsl device currently used as Auto eth0 only works when i plug in to the computer. The device doesn't starts automatically as it does in Windows. How can solve this ? Each time I try to connect internet after restarting , I should manually plug the cable to the port.
View 3 Replies View RelatedFinally solved a problem of wireless not working on my laptop. Now I have a problem where Firefox (3.6.4) starts up in off-line mode on each instance. I have to go to files menu and uncheck the work offline button before trying to go to any site. When I close firefox and later open it again, the work offline button is still checked.
Why is the unchecking of work offline saved between instances? Other settings and preferences are saved correctly. I don't have this problem in openSUSE 11.2 & 11.3 (same version of FF).

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have two laptops here, a Lenovo T510 and a Lenovo Ideapdad S12, both running Fedora 13 with KDE4. On the T510 wireless worked out of the box and is enabled when I boot it, on the S12 it's not. I have the wl driver installed but every time I boot the laptop wireless is disabled in knetworkmanager. I have to manually enabled it, then wait a few seconds until it establishes a connection to my already configured wireless networks.

Recently, I increased the size of the extended partition and created another logical partition inside it. I formatted the new logical partition from Vista.
After reboot, instead of the list of operating systems, I started getting "grub>"
I searched on the internet and modified entries in /boot/grub/grub.conf, from (hd0,4).. to (hd0,5)..
I still get the grub prompt, but if I enter " configfile (hd0,5)/boot/grub/menu.lst " it shows the os list & I can use Fedora.
How can I configure the system so that it shows the list of os instead of "grub>" ?
I'm building a lab of fedora 14 machines that are supported by an RHEL/CentOS 5.6 server. Everything was working fine yesterday, but today ypbind can't connect to the server and nfs mounts fail with this message:

One of the screens in the installer( middle of screen) will show what systems are on the grub menu, and one will be marked the default.
If the vista is not there (usually indicated by other), then click the add and select the correct boot partition (sda for vista) and change it's label to Windows Vista.
If other is there, click the edit button and change other to Windows Vista.
Finally, click the check box for the one you want to be the default boot. (you can always change that in the grub.conf later.)
Whenever I play streaming videos, (mpg, wmv, etc), the volume will move from where it's set to maximum level. Then I have to adjust the sound. If I play another streaming video it will do it again. I'm using F11 with Gnome. How to stop it from happening? No matter how I adjust player's volume, it starts off at maximum level. This is my sound info I'm using:

The application is Conky running under Fedora 12 Alpha. This application is set to start upon logging in to the desktop and it does just that. It appears for a second or two and then disappears from view. Although I don't see it, top tells me it is in fact running. As a result of this unexpected behavior I kill the process and restart the application using the ALT/F2 run application tool. When I do this Conky appears on the desktop and stays in view.
View 7 Replies View RelatedRan preupgrade for F11 to F12. Everything ok there it seemed. Upon reboot, it started booting the kernel, then the video disappeared, no signal to monitor. After about 15min, I just rebooted and managed to get make to Fedora 11.
Considering just going with DVD upgrade. I googled preupgrade no video and here as well, and several unrelated things seemed to come up.

I'm attempting to install F12 64 bit. I currently have F10 running on this system. I'd like to do a clean install. I'm using the DVD. I boot the computer with the DVD in. I choose the first option (Install or upgrade). It starts the boot process and then it hangs. [URL]
After asking at #Fedora I was given the advice to boot with `intel_iommu=off`. That gets me slightly further in the process. It gets to the point where anaconda is starting. Then all heck breaks loose. It appears the monitor loses the signal from the computer (power light turns red just like if the computer was off). The caps lock and the scroll lock lights on the keyboard blink about once a second. The DVD drive continues to spin for about a minute and then stops. Since I have no display, I have no idea what's going on.

View 6 Replies View Relatedtrying to get Firefox working properly. I have the tarball installed from Firefox�s site and am using Fedora 12 with KDE as the desktop environment. The problem is if I start Firefox normally, say, by just clicking on the firefox script, then the graphics will be rather crude; but when Firefox starts as soon as I log in (because I�ve configured it to auto-start) then the graphics will be nice and smooth. I�m having a hard time trying to find answers for this because I�m not exactly sure what�s happening? I think when it auto-starts as I log in, it�ll use... well, this is the bit I haven�t got a clue how to explain? I�d guess one time it uses QT, and the other time it�ll use GTK.
I don�t know why it�s doing this, and when it�s started normally and I go to shutdown most of the time it�ll come up with a crash report. There isn�t any difference in the way Firefox is being opened, the auto-start calls upon the same script that my shortcut uses, which is the same as clicking on the firefox script in the firefox folder. I have a few images attached to elucidate the problem. I understand I may not have made myself very clear, but I�m having a great deal of trouble understanding what precisely is going on.
Firefox can seem a bit glitchy when the crude graphics are in use. Like the mouse-overs which leave traces of the box behind when you move the mouse away. So I�m having to logout then back in if I�ve happened to close Firefox and want to reopen it...
I just did a clean install and ran system-config-network from command line to fix my IP settings. Everything works but when I reboot, my NIC is gone from #ifconfig -a
I have to login to the GUI and go to System --> Administration --> Network --> "Click on my NIC" --> check the box that says "Activate device when computer starts"
Once this box is checked, everything works fine. - I have turned off NetworkManager and just use the network service to manage my ip settings.
I was wondering if this "Activate device when computer starts" can be done through the command line without having to access the GUI?
