General :: Server Hangs At Startup To Connect To Ldap Before Network Service Starts?
Jul 6, 2010I am using centos 5.5 x85_64 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 The server is hanging at start up due to the follwoing error
udevd[746] nss_ldap reconnecting to LDAP server (sleeping 4 seconds)
udevd[746] failed to bind to LDAP ser er ldap://192.168.0.100 cant contact ldap
It fails and then tries again, and again, each time increasing the sleep time. This is happening before network sercvices are started so ther is no way it can connect to ldap. anyone know a way to fix this problem?

Apr 29, 2009I'm trying to use and old Dell Dimension 2350 workstation with 1GB of RAM and a 200GB drive as a home server. I boot the CentOS 5.3 install DVD, get to the splash screen and hit ENTER to start the install. The install routine starts and then kernel panics with a very long trace I can't make sense of. I've used the DVD for other installs so I know the media is good.Are there any known quirks to installing linux on a Dimension 2350? Maybe some kernel line parameters like no acpi?? As a test, I took an Ubuntu server cd, and the install actually completed but on reboot it kernel panicked with a similar long trace error. Obviously this is most likely a hardware issue.

Also they have 4GB Ram each with 2,5 - 250GB HDD Core 2 Duo E7500 CPU The first one went fine through the installation and it' s up and running while the other one, no matter if I use linux text linux text noprobe linux text dd noprobe irqpoll either in 5.3 or 5.4 x86 or 64
It starts booting and video just goes off, no error messages at all. Tried to install using the other motherboard, went fine, with hdd installed and working, it does the same thing, shows the Centos menu loading, start loading and video goes off.
OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Starts To Boot Then Blank Screen And Nothing?
Apr 18, 2010I have tried two distros - Mandriva and OpenSuse. Both provide the same results, though Mandriva booted...but still the same problem, after installing blank screen comes up and nothing. Keyboard touch bad, mouse nothing happens. I would prefer openSuse but may have to switch.

Acer 7740 17" laptop
Intel i3-330M Chipset
4Gig DDR3 RAM 1066
Intel Integrated HD Video 128MB
Install Win7 64-Bit no issues, wiped and installed Linux and I cannot get past this blank screen. Installation works, no problem installed packages etc. When coming up on 1st boot, login - boom nothing? Searching the web and I suspect the Intel graphics are the problem but I'm not sure.
I bought this laptop to put Linux on it solely for a personal project of using Linux for a year. I'm an IT professional for 23 years and comfortable with CLI.
Ubuntu :: Windows Starts Automatically On Dual Install
Nov 11, 2010I just reinstalled Ubuntu alongside windows for a dual install. The installation went ok but when Ubuntu said it needed to restart to complete, now my pc just loads windows 7 everytime. It doesnt give me an option of choosing Ubuntu. I know the install worked because when I look at my drive in windows it is the partitioned size. Any way to manually launch Ubuntu?

However, when I installed lucid (fresh install) conky starts wrong with ubuntu, like in a glass box that overlaps any window. Feb 6, 2010I've installed F12, updated to today. I've set it to boot to runlevel 3. That works. If I run startx, X starts - I see the mouse cursor and the blue/green background. But no panels. No desktop icons.
I tried switchdesk kde, then startx. Same thing. Except kde is running because if I right-click on the desktop, I get a kde dialog that allows me to start an app.
Tried switchdesk gnome. Same thing. Rebooted, same thing.

The installation starts normally, but stops on step 3 of 7, where I choose my keyboard layer...it never passes on to step 4 of 7. I must mention that I had a corrupted installation of Windows XP running on it...I made an USB bootable disk, and everything goes fine untill step 3 of 7.

Jun 17, 2011I installed Umbuntu (MythBuntu 11.04 as backend system) and initially when starting it just went to a blank screen (no prompt, nothing). After going through safe mode I was able to get to a prompt and into the UI in low graphic mode.After updating the graphic drivers (nvidea) to the latest and changing some grub options (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi=off splash") when I restarted it went to the busybox initramfs prompt. I typed "exit" and the UI started up normally.
The next time I restarted it went through to a blank screen. I typed "exit" again and enter and the UI started up normally again (even though I couldn't see what I was typing at the time).While I was going through the recovery mode I do remember some messages about disk not found/mounted, when I googled it I found stuff about entering rootdelay=90 in menu.lst which doesn't exist anymore. Is there a similar option I can enter somewhere in 11.04?Also I'm new to Ubuntu (in fact any Linux distro as an admin), where would I find any log files that may help with finding the problem.

I've already change my fstab file to add a network drive to be mount on startup localize in /mnt/freebox/. This is also working great. The issue is during the startup, utorrent starts before fstab and thus the network drive is unmount.
In my utorrent init.d daemon script, I ask for $Network starts in first time: Code: Required-Start: $network Is there any possibilities to order the startup and ask to fstab to start before uTorrent Daemon?

Feb 10, 2010Sometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection.It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

Fedora Networking :: No Network When Desktop Gui Starts.
Feb 2, 2010Brand new clean install of F12. On boot the network starts and grabs an IP from my DHCP server and will return pings, however, as soon as the logon window starts "all" network activety is stopped.
I have tried deactivating the NIC, then enabling again, (doesn't get an ip at this point), turning off the firewall, managing the network with & without network manager enabled, selinux off...all makes no difference.

Jun 29, 2010Finally solved a problem of wireless not working on my laptop. Now I have a problem where Firefox (3.6.4) starts up in off-line mode on each instance. I have to go to files menu and uncheck the work offline button before trying to go to any site. When I close firefox and later open it again, the work offline button is still checked.
Why is the unchecking of work offline saved between instances? Other settings and preferences are saved correctly. I don't have this problem in openSUSE 11.2 & 11.3 (same version of FF).

On the T510 wireless worked out of the box and is enabled when I boot it, on the S12 it's not. I have the wl driver installed but every time I boot the laptop wireless is disabled in knetworkmanager. I have to manually enabled it, then wait a few seconds until it establishes a connection to my already configured wireless networks.

Jun 20, 2011I have Windows Vista in a primary partition & Fedora 14 in a logical partition.
Recently, I increased the size of the extended partition and created another logical partition inside it. I formatted the new logical partition from Vista.
After reboot, instead of the list of operating systems, I started getting "grub>"
I searched on the internet and modified entries in /boot/grub/grub.conf, from (hd0,4).. to (hd0,5)..
I still get the grub prompt, but if I enter " configfile (hd0,5)/boot/grub/menu.lst " it shows the os list & I can use Fedora.
How can I configure the system so that it shows the list of os instead of "grub>" ?
