I installed 10.04 on a Hyper-V virtual machine and a few hours later discovered that the server was unusually sluggish. Top revealed that ksoftirqd was sucking up around 97% CPU. Reading up on the issue focused on earlier kernel issues, which I knew didn't apply to 10.04. I eventually discovered that I set two CPU cores in Hyper-V. Decreasing this to just one CPU solved the issue.

Whenever I open an open office.org document from a cifs/SAMBA share as I navigate through it my laptop will lock up, and by lock up I mean so bad that I can't even move the mouse. If I let it sit for anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes it will come out of it. Trying to navigate through the document again will trigger a similar episode.
I finally got fed up and opened a terminal with top and set it to always on top, then I opened my samba share, opened my spreadsheet. and proceeded to trigger my problem. When the lockup happened it was so bad and so quick that top stopped updating and I wasn't even able to see something creep up in CPU usage. As it came out of it top started updating in bursts, first ksoftirqd/0 was at 100%, then that dropped to near nothing, then xorg spiked to 100%, then the system returned to normal.
I googled around an found lots of speculation, and bug reports that were way above my head. Some of the speculation suggested it was a kernel issue, but that has supposedly been fixed. Another forum post said that it was a multi-processor issue. (the guy was running it in a vm so he just removed the vCPU) And yet another suggested a network issue/attack. I am running a Dell Latitude D620 with a dual core Intel proc and a Broadcomm network card (wired) and an Intel wireless card. I have all the latest updates. The shares I experience this issue with (only shares I really use) are on a Netapp and are active directory integrated (my laptop is not joined to the domain)
I'm not even sure where to start trouble shooting this. All I can tell you is that ksoftirqd starts using 100% cpu. It either happens immediately after a resume (about a 50 % chance), or at some random interval (anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours after a fresh boot).

The top command indicated there were ten-plus instances of the watchdog, migration, and ksoftirqd daemons running on the system. I am not familiar with these services, so I wanted to know what they are, and is there a need to have this many instances of each running on the system?

However, the mouse isn't working, so I'm getting good at using the keyboard shortcuts right off the bat.Anyhoo, I'd like to get the mouse working. I downloaded Hyper-V for Linux 1.0 (integration components), but I can't seem to get it installed. I attach to the ISO from my VM and the CD shows up in Ubuntu, but then what? I tried running the setup.pl file, but nothing seemed to happen and my mouse still isn't working.

Keep getting the error "hyper transport sync flood error occurred on last boot" Press F1 to Resume. F1 causes just a reboot and the same thing happens. Anyone seen this error? When it comes to partition/format the drive, Ubuntu is only detecting 136.9GB of disk space, even though I allocated 500GB for it to be able to use. I made the disk static, not dynamically expanding.
The Hyper-V host is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter.
I was going to use Virtualbox on that server since it plays nicer with Linux, but we already have Hyper-V established and you can't do both.
I'm trying to setup a virtual machine running Ubuntu server 9.10 in Hyper-V on a windows 2008 server.
However it can't detect the network adapter (Virtual NIC uses Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet).
After doing some research on a Windows forum i was told to try using the legacy network interface. Annoyingly 64bit edition doesn't seem to have this.
Anyone know how i can get around this?
I have a virtual machine that was running Ubuntu Server 9.10 under Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2 and the performace was acceptable. I run it in text mode with no X windows. I use it for LAMP. I upgraded to 10.04 and now the console is almost unusable it is sooo slow. It starts booting and text is painting fast and then something happens to the video. The screen goes to green, draws a few vertical lines, then clears back to a black screen but you can tell it is in a new video mode and the rest of the boot process and logging in and using the system is horrible because scrolling and redrawing of the screen crawls. Never had this problem in 9.10.
I'm sure that it is a "flipping from a text to a graphic text mode" issue at some point during the boot process. I've tried playing with kernel options (vga and nomodeset) but neither helps. When it gets about half way through the boot, something is making it change and then I'm screwed.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I enabled ssh and I can ssh in with no problem. Performance is great so it is definitely the console now being in a "graphics mode" kind of issue.
I have a hardware design which is completely tested and verified on windows OS. My hardware is connected to hyper terminal. Whenever I give a command from hyper terminal then my hardware will response in what way I need. As I am new to linux os I don't know how to open or how to configure hyper terminal in linux. I stopped my work completely.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a SONY 52x DVD Writer in my Desktop. Initially it was okay.. For the past 2 months or so , the DVD tray is super sensitive.. When I press the "Eject" Button , it comes out and immediately the next second goes back in..Also I face great difficulty in loading a CD/DVD .The moment the DVD touches the tray , it sucks the tray back in.
As a result , I am not able to position the DVD, most of the time it gets stuck ..I cannot manually stop the tray from going in as I guess the spring for the tray will break.Should I replace the drive? Apart from this mechanical issue , the drive reads and writes properly.. I like Drives which have separate open and close buttons (not the ones which you push from the front)

i have experiemented different way to install Linux Integration Components 2.6.32 and had no luck intstalling sow my question is that becuse hyper v is not supporting debian that's why it's not working? View 4 Replies View Relatedi'm running some virtual Fedora installations on a windows server 2008 with hyper-v. Most of them are Fedora 12 and 13. Everything works fine for some years. Yesterday i want to upgrade a F13 machine to F14 by netistall. The upgrade ran without any problems. After the reebot the machine was off the network. All the networkconfigs by DHCP are OK, IP address, gateways, DNS settings and so on. But the machine can't ping or connect to other hosts. I tried an VM from scratch with both F14 i386 and x86_64 - same ****. This is the first time i had such a problem by upgrading Fedora machines.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 15 on Hyper-V (Windows host). I installed to disk, rebooted. Now I'm off to installing the Integration services, but I've got a few problems:
1) Since it is not yet installed, it looks like the network is not functional.
2) From what I can see, I need to have a couple of things installed beforehand (GCC amoung other things)
The problem is that when I did this previously with Virtualbox, I was able to install the pre-requisites with yum. Now this won't work as I have no network. I can't use VirtualBox here at work as we have everything else running under Hyper-V so have no choice but to go this way (VB and HV can't live together on the same host). it's just so much harder to go through this installation with Hyper-V.

I dont need future compatibility etc as yet, just need to do some experiments, so any distribution would be fine. FYI - I am trying BOINC installation and testing.
I have 2.6.18-164.2.1.e15 running on Hyper-v. I did yum update and noticed that kernel is upgraded to 2.6.18-164.9.1.e15. If I try to boot into the new kernel it hangs with message first "switchroot mount failed" and then "kernel panic". This is probably related to Hyper-v drivers installed in the old kernel. First question: Do you think this is correct? Is it possible to somehow disable Hyper-v drivers so I can boot into the new kernel and then reinstall drivers? There is nothing in Microsoft documentation about uninstalling Linux Integration Components.

I am trying to install Debian Lenny via Hyper-V. I get to the point where it asks for the network card. For some reason it can not find my network card. I have a RealTek (RTL8112L PCIe Gigabit LAN controller featuring AI NET 2 built on motherboard).
For some reason it doesn't see it. My issue is if I continue without the network how am I getting the drivers? Unfortunately Hyper-V doesn't support USB. I guess I can try to burn to CD but not looking to waste a cd for 480k and not sure that will work as I only see a auto.sh and a couple other files under scr directory. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. This is a fairly new Motherboard/NIC so I do not understand why it isn't recognized. I know it cant have everything but Realtek is a fairly common nic.
I need to do some serial comms work and need an equivalent to hyper terminal on Debian. Does it exist?

I have a Centos 5.2 VM running under Windows 2008 Hyper-V. If I add two "legacy Nic's" and bridge them, everything appears to work fine. However, if I remove the legacy nics and replace them with two synthetic nics (linux integration components), the nics seems to function fine UNTIL I add them to a bridge.This VM will eventually be used as a DansGuardian/Squid transparent proxy for a local library. The logical layout is represented by the attached jpg image. I have also included the ifcfg- scripts for the adapters and bridge for both scenarios.It would also be useful if someone else has Hyper-V with the integration components and dual physical nics to see if they can reproduce my symptoms on their box.Legacy Adapters:

I'm new to Linux, so I decided to try using Wubi to get started. THe problem is, when it finished installing 10.04, I got this message: OSError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: u'C:\ubuntu\install\ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso' Is there any way around this? It might just be that overly restrictive thing called Vista (which I have the bad luck to be using). I was considering getting a USB drive for Ubuntu anyway..

What is the difference between the Ubuntu Installer for windows and the Ubuntu CD image? If I use the ubuntu installer for windows, does it have the capability to partition my drive, will it enable to share files with windows etc or is it just a way not to have to burn a CD. Just curious, the exact details of the installation files were not made clear on the website. Note: Windows Version: XP, 32bit, SP3. I have not partitioned anything yet.
