So I've been wanting to use some mac applications which aren't available on any Linux distro (That day will come!). I googled around and found PearPC which apparently lets you run Mac 10.4 'Tiger'. I installed pearpc via the repos and have a 6GB file that I'm needing apparently. All the tutorials I could find where for using Pearpc on Windows which used a pear GUI for creating a 'configuration file'. Which I am unable to find for Ubuntu. I was also unable to figure how to create one via Terminal.

trying to get Firefox working properly. I have the tarball installed from Firefoxs site and am using Fedora 12 with KDE as the desktop environment. The problem is if I start Firefox normally, say, by just clicking on the firefox script, then the graphics will be rather crude; but when Firefox starts as soon as I log in (because Ive configured it to auto-start) then the graphics will be nice and smooth. Im having a hard time trying to find answers for this because Im not exactly sure whats happening? I think when it auto-starts as I log in, itll use... well, this is the bit I havent got a clue how to explain? Id guess one time it uses QT, and the other time itll use GTK.
I dont know why its doing this, and when its started normally and I go to shutdown most of the time itll come up with a crash report. There isnt any difference in the way Firefox is being opened, the auto-start calls upon the same script that my shortcut uses, which is the same as clicking on the firefox script in the firefox folder. I have a few images attached to elucidate the problem. I understand I may not have made myself very clear, but Im having a great deal of trouble understanding what precisely is going on.
Firefox can seem a bit glitchy when the crude graphics are in use. Like the mouse-overs which leave traces of the box behind when you move the mouse away. So Im having to logout then back in if Ive happened to close Firefox and want to reopen it...

I just installed fedora 15 and I can't seem to find my way around Gnome 3.0.1. In fedora 14 when I connected an external hard drive it used to automount itself. I can't find it in fedora 15 though.
How do I set startup applications in fedora 15? In fedora 14 I used to have this wizard to which I could add an application that I would want to run on startup.

So...without editing ~/.config/autostart (which I can't find in F15...) How does someone set a startup application?I notice Gnome 3 does not have the "startup programs" option available any longer.. So, I went searching with the hopes of running it with trusty terminal:
Code:
#yum whatprovides gnome-session-properties
You can use "*/gnome-session-properties" and/or "*/bin/gnome-session-properties"

I have been wanting conky to run at start up... fortunately I got that part done (I am very new) but after that, even though my conky was not configured to stand on top of my applications it would, and I didn't want that so I added some more code, and now it disappears if I click over it, it is still running, just not visible.
Here is my code...

I just installed fedora 15 and this version seems to be missing a lot of the programs in the old version of fedora 14 I had. I just need to know what that program that manages startup applications is called. I used to use it in fedora 14 for a keyboard fix(a key wasn't assigned to the right symbols). I just need to run a xmodmap script to fix it but I don't know how to make it run everytime I start the system.

I'd like to add custom startup commands (for example starting a process, registering to a registration server, downloading a configuration file) to the Linux startup process. Those commands should be triggered on startup only. What is the standard/appropriate way to do this?
EDIT: Is /etc/profile the right place to trigger such things?
EDIT2: I'm using Ubuntu.

I can't find a way to use cheese in lucid. When I start it, it immediately starts flashing photos in countdown mode and repeats. I can't find a way to stop it except to use the hardware Fn-Esc to disable the webcam.
Because of the intermittent flashing and countdown 3-2-1 screens, I can't hit any buttons or menus.

Not sure if this belongs here or in the upgrade forum but since the upgrade went OK I figured I would post this here. I come from a RedHat background and am not too familiar with the Ubuntu/Debian way of dealing with service startup so this may be simple. I was running 10.04 LTS on a Sony Vaio and did a distribution upgrade to 10.10. When running 10.04 LTS the sshd daemon started on boot and I was able to ssh into the PC. Now that did the update I can start the daemon using the command "sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start" but it doesn't start when the systems boots.
I even tried creating the entries in the /etc/rc.#.d directories like this:
/etc/rc0.d/K20ssh -> ../init.d/ssh
/etc/rc1.d/K20ssh -> ../init.d/ssh
[code]....

I have a nice script that I've placed in the Startup Applications that open some windows for me when I reboot the computer and login. But when I connect remotely via RDP it runs this script too... and that isn't desirable. Is there a way I can prevent the script from running when I login through RDP?

I tried to put a terminal in the desktop using more or less the procedure described in this article:
[URL]
It worked fine, but then I installed avant-windows-navigator and I think it created some conflicts with compiz and other applications.Both the desktop terminal and Skype started to appear in duplicate when I logged in. So I went to the startup applications menu and disabled them both. When I logged back in they both appear only once, but the terminal is in the wrong spot in the desktop.So there are probably some startup registers somewhere that are causing this.i've tried reinstalling compiz and I uninstall AWN and it didn't work.

I've just moved to Ubuntu and using Linux on the desktop in general. I use RHEL on a daily basis for work so don't really have much experience with window managers etc but like to understand how I'm doing what I'm doing. In that regard, I've configured a couple of scripts to be run when I login using 'System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications' but what I want to know is where do these settings actually get stored within the file system?

I'm having a hard time with my xfce netbook. Yesterday i was adding Tomboy note to my startup applications and i don't know why but since that i'm having a 50 seconds delay between the time i see my wallpaper and icons and the time my startup applications start to load. In this delay my CPU is stable and don't work at all.
Xfce is on my girlfriend netbook too and it seems that we have the same configurations when i look in "session and startup".

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition as a virtual machine on a Windows 7 Host laptop. I install VirtualBox guest additions. Then I installed Chromium. I want Chromium to autostart whenever the Virtual Machine (Ubuntu) boots up. When I add the entry (system/preferences/startup) I use the command chromium-browser. It stays there until I reboot. After I reboot it disappears from the startup applications and does not startup like it should.

how to disable startup applications in GNOME 2.30.2 running on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (64-bit). When I open Startup Applications (System --> Preferences -->) and uncheck a startup program, close Startup Applications and open it again, the program I unchecked is checked again. Even if I remove a program from the list it's there again the next time I open Startup Applications and the program opens when I restart.
