Fedora Hardware :: Install 13 On AMD K6-2: Cmov Not Present
Jul 25, 2010
I recently built a few boxes from old scraps, figuring I would give those good ol' K6-2s a second chance with Fedora. I didn't got far though. On booting the install CD, the kernel will spit immediately after loading: "this kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU: cmov"
I've tried with the Live CD I already had, and on seeing it's marked as i686 on the download page, I also tried with the normal "i386" non-live install, with the same result. I can boot Knoppix just fine, so I'm guessing what I want is a Fedora install with a kernel not optimized for i686. Does such thing exists? Probably not, unless I get an old release. But which one? And should I be able to update to fresh versions? Or what alternate methods of installing could I use?

I am trying to install Linux on a 12-year-old PC with an AMD Pentium II equivalent and with 128Mb RAM. Xubuntu 10.04 won't install because the kernel requires "cmov" but the PC's processor doesn't have it. There are loads of posts on the Internet about this but I have not found any listings of Linux distros that don't need cmov other than TinyMe, which I shall try installing.
There is no hope of my being able to use the command line to replace the kernel version or for any such fix -I am just too new to it all. nice-looking distro that should install that doesn't look too old and that has a good set of features?

I have an eBox 3300 PC. Fedora 11 runs great on it. I went to upgrade to 12 and right away while the DVD was still loading I got this error: "This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU: cmov Unable to boot. Please use a kernel appropriate for your cpu. I'm at a complete loss. What do I do next? I downloaded the fedora 12 i386 package, which I also had the i386 of fedora 11. Is this a hopeless problem or is there something I can do to get 12 to install on this pc.

I have a VIA C3 Nehemiah 1GHZ, Model 9, Stepping 8. It has CMOV support. The chipset is a CLE266. This is a PCCHIPS mini-itx board. I have tried installing the following: Debian 5.08 Multiarch liveCD. What works:
- Installation works properly.
- The kernel installed was an i486 type, even though I have the CMOV instruction.
What does not work:
- A normal, non-verbose bootup will freeze the system, seems like it happens right after CPUFREQ module starts up.
What I've tried:
- booting using noapic result = no change, still freezes up.
The freeze up completely freezes everything including USB, I can tell because I have a wireless keyboard whose receiver lights up when a key is pressed. After the freeze occurs, the receiver stays lit until I power down.
Note Also: Ubuntu 7.10 works perfectly. Ubuntu 9.04A6 worked perfectly. Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10, 9.04, 9.10, 10.4, 10.10 all exhibit a similar freeze up, except it happens after X11 starts up and Gnome Desktop is loaded but not right away, after a few seconds. Note Also, when I use failing Ubuntu's, if I do a CTRL+ALT+F1 and go to the terminal, the system does not freeze.
Note Also, I tried using cpufrequtils in Ubuntu 10.10 and setting the minimum speed to 800MHz but still got the freeze ups. I do not know why 7.10 and 9.04A6 worked properly, but none of the other debian based distros work without freezing... EVEN THE UBUNTU LIVE CDS FREEZE UP!

Question about shared libraries dependancies & ldd: Lets find dependancies for /bin/echo :
$ldd /bin/echo
linux-gate.so.1 => (0xb7f70000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/i686/cmov/libc.so.6 (0xb7e01000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7f71000)
Lets focus on libc6 :
[Code]....
What is this directory /lib/i686/cmov? How does ldd to link /lib/libc.so.6 to /lib/i686/cmov/libc.so.6? Why having 2 libc6 on the system (files have different sizes, so are different)?

The updated Kernel 2.6.32.26.175.fc12 (i686) broke nVidia 96xx drivers (nVidia MX-4000 card).Resulted in a quickly flashing cursor in the upper left corner, with no X startup.I removed the driver and let it rebuild using akmod. Still have the same problem. When I revert back to the previous kernel 2.6.32.23-170.fc12.i686, all is well.At this point, wonder what the chances are of this being fixed? Seems the last set of updates before EOL of a release always breaks something critical.

For some reason, sometimes after I just turn the computer off by pressing the power button while hooked up to the video mount, I'll turn the computer on and (after it automatically logs into the standard user) come to a blank black screen. The only thing I can access is by pressing Alt+Tab to get a "no present windows" window, and thats it. Could it be that an activity or something has been deleted somehow?

I messed up my computer a little bit... I had F14, but I wanted to format the entireisk. I launched an installation cd with some older version of Fedora, dered it to remove everything (but I didn't accept changes, that's important!), but in the meantime I changed my mind and I wanted to wipe the disk the other way. There was no 'quit' button anywhere,just.. powered off the computer. Dumb, I know.Right now it doesn't work at all. At first, I thought I destroyed the partition array, but I looked into the bios and it says that no HDD drive is installed. And I have no idea what to do now. I tried to find a solution via Google, but all I found were problems related to newly bought hard drives. Nothing about a blonde powering off the computer during the installation process though .

I have installed OpenLDAP on Feodora 14. But while configuring I have noticed that the file /etc/openldap/slapd.conf is missing. I tried rpm -ql and it is stated the file is present in the location. I am not sure how many other require files are missing. Which server I should go for for centralize authentication.

I recently upgraded mu Fedora 13 to Fedora 14, I decided to add another NIC that I assumed it'll be eth1, when I boot the PC and typed #ifconfig eth0, eth1, lo appears. But when I typed #setup eth1 is not present. Why is that? I remembered doing this in Centos 5.5 but it automatically appears after I added a NIC and boot the pc? what should I do?

I have a linux account in my college (A server-client setup. We use SSH to login to our account)My account quota is 20 MB and one day I logged into my account from a Fedora machine and my entire account became full, thanks to .xsession-errors, his older brother and their pals. So I went on a killing spree with [rm -r]and (you guessed it!) I deleted someimportant file. I think lognames or something. Now I can't see in which directory I am. Every time I have to do [ll] to check the contents of my directory to understand my location

Recently, I've started to use Ubuntu operating system.. the last version 10.04 LTS. I downloaded the .ISO image file from the site and burnt a CD to use it back, but I was wondering now after I installed my Ubuntu and made all updates and upgrades to the applications and added all packages that might be useful for me, can or can't I burn the present system with all the add-ons that I've added on DVD/CD?? Instead of using the old CD that I made which is free of all packages and necessary programs.. or at least, is not there downloadable files from the internet that allow me to install the packages and the programs offline!! Considering that I might not be able to have an internet connection..

why I get this message during startup? I have to chose efore I can start up my system."The disk drive for /data is not ready yet or not presentContinue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery"Once upon a time I had a partition with that label, but I've since deleted it and resized my system partition to use that space. Why does my system keep looking for this drive?

I've just done an upgrade install from Maverick to Natty, and noticed (while poking about in Synaptic) that version 4.4 of g++ was installed alongside 4.5. (Further investigation revealed that this was the case for both gcc and gcj as well.)
If anyone here installed Natty from scratch, could they look in Synaptic and tell me if both versions come installed by default? Or can I assume the presence of 4.4 is simply because it was installed under Maverick and get rid of it?
I'm using the "Ubuntu Classic" interface (i.e. Gnome) and admit that I don't know if it's possible to get the required information from Unity's "Ubuntu Software Centre".

I originally installed Debian and configured it the way I want it without any problems. It was working perfectly and I was happy. I then tried openSuse. I did not like it and re-installed Debian five hours later. Now I have a strange problem. This is the third re-install. With the first two, after installing a few fonts the system says the fonts are present, but they cannot be displayed. I only get empty rectangles. The fonts are not available in office and there is no text at all on the internet. Only photographs and a few icons. This forum for example, only has lines separating the posts.
I do not know why there is a problem, because I am configuring the system the same as the first time; install scim and add a few fonts. The founts are not in packages, but I need them for some of the work I do in office. Since Debian uses this strange permissions system where the user is not considered the owner of his or her computer, I use gksu nautilus. I makes no difference if I leave the permissions of the fount folder as root or change it to me. I am completely at a loss. As I mentioned, I am doing the same thing I did the first time, so there should not be any problems.

OS: LucidSymptoms: Launchers are in Desktop folder, but they are not on the desktop. Also, when I "right click" on desktop, nothing happens (no pop up menus). Attempts to add new launchers to desktop (via "add launcher to desktop" or "click-n-drag") are notsuccessful.Symptoms the same on both monitors.Possible Cause: I just completed a problematic install of 2nd monitor (NVidia X Server). Currently running in TwinView. After install was completed I noticed launchers were missing.Info: Desktop folder is owned (RW) & group (R) to my user, execute is enabled, and Others is R, as are all files in folder.

I tried to upgrade to the newest ubuntu version (10.04 I think). Now I can't even boot my computer. After the initial "boot" stuff, the ubuntu screen comes on and then locks up in the process. I get the message "The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or press s to skip mounting or M for manual recovery."I've tried "waiting" overnight to no avail. I tried the "S" command to skip and got the message "[141.233783] Adding 1502036k Swap on /dev/sdb5. Priority-1 extents:1 across:1502036k"
I think the manual recovery is what I need to do. When I type the "M" for manual recovery I get a maintenance shell with the last line being. Can anyone please give me some commands to fix this problem? I have an OLD ubuntu boot disk. How can I get my computer to boot from it? I tried hitting "esc" while booting up to no avail. I also tried hitting F1 while booting up. I think that used to allow me to boot from the CD drive...but doesn't work now.

I have an annoying issue when loading Ubuntu it gives a message sdc1 and sdb1 being not ready. I have to press S to skip the two messages and continue loading.
The problem is that sdc1 is my DVD drive and sdb1 is my USB drive, so naturally they are not always present.. Its really annoying, is there anyway I fix this so it stops doing this every time I reboot.
Also I think its connected but if I do boot without these present, when i do plug for instance my usb drive in once loaded, it will not mount, I have to reboot with it plugged in.

In Kubuntu, what is that desktop folder window that is always present? I assume this is some type of KDE thing that sets it apart from gnome. But how do you get rid of it permanently? What if I just want to have a normally functioning desktop with icons like Ubuntu or Windows, but I like the look of the Kubunu theme and such? I want all those ever present, weird windows to go away, and for the desktop to function normally like you would think a desktop should. With icons, and a lower taskbar. That weird thing is kinda getting on my nerves.

I've been trying to get the dual monitors to work the way I want them to, so far no luck. I read that xinerama would enable dragging between two X screens so I went to System -> Preferences -> Monitors and clicked the box for xinerama. Rebooted and now the top panel is on the other screen and, more importantly, I can't access the monitor controls anymore. When I click on Monitors I get an error message that says "Could not get screen informaion, RANDR extension is not present"I love Ubuntu, but the work required just to get it doing what I need it to do is tough to soldier through.
