Ubuntu Multimedia :: Audio Loopback Not Present?
Sep 4, 2010
I have the same problem in Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 where I can't record "what I hear" or "Stereo Mix" or "loopback", etc...I did not have this problem in previous versions of Windows (XP) and Ubuntu (9.04)...I hope this isn't because of MPAA/RIAA/DMCA/ACTA crapAudio Card as reported by alsamixer: SigmaTel STAC9200

I am new to fedora. In fact I have not even installed it yet. I have been using a different distribution for some time now. But it has just had an update, and with that I lost the ability to have analog loopback. I need it because I need to record sound from my speakers, and my mic at the same time, and my soundcard does not seem to allow them to be mixed (or at least I could never figure out how). I have been using the analog loopback to add the mic to the speaker sound, then splitting the speaker sound to also feed back into the line in. I then recorded from the line in to get both the speaker sounds, and the mic. But now I guess alsa has taken the analog loopback out, so I need to find another way.
So I am trying out distributions, and I decided to try fedora. I am just running the live cd right now, and I found that if I installed paprefs (pulse audio preferences) there was an option to loop the audio to the speakers. However it does not loopback the sound. I tried the same think in linux mint, and it worked, but but after about a min of this, the sound got distorted to the point where I could not even understatnd what I said in the mic. This happened all of a sudden, not a gradual thing, but one second it was fine, the next it was very bad.

I have a Dell Dimension 2350 with an Intel 82845G Graphics controller that is connected to a 15" Craig flat screen television via VGA. It has absolutely no issue running at the television's peak of 1280x720 at 60 Hz with Windows XP. When I first discovered Ubuntu, I immediately tried to install it. After a tedious month of failed attempts, I resolved to doing what I opposed: using Wubi. I did not want to use Wubi because I wanted Ubuntu on a separate partition.
This is where my issue is. After installing Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, I rebooted and started normally. I noticed that audio was present but all I saw was a blank "No Signal" screen on my television. I waited for over an hour, to no avail.computer was responsive. This was obvious when the computer released audio when a button was blindly pressed. I reinstalled after waiting even more, suspecting a failed install. I then used the failsafe graphics upon pressing escape after my third failed install. This worked, but it gave me an unsightly 640x480 resolution. I did my best to fix this, but it came to a dead halt with an error I could not fix: a CRTC error.
I then installed Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala without an an issue. Everything was perfect except for the fact that I did not have the most updated Operating System even though it was free. I decided to to update 10.04 via Update Manager, thinking that all would go well. It did not. My mistake in updating brought me back to the drawing board. My official Ubuntu 10.04 Compact Disc arrived in the mail yesterday. When I hit "Install" I eventually end up at the same "No Signal" screen

I've been trying to get the dual monitors to work the way I want them to, so far no luck. I read that xinerama would enable dragging between two X screens so I went to System -> Preferences -> Monitors and clicked the box for xinerama. Rebooted and now the top panel is on the other screen and, more importantly, I can't access the monitor controls anymore. When I click on Monitors I get an error message that says "Could not get screen informaion, RANDR extension is not present"I love Ubuntu, but the work required just to get it doing what I need it to do is tough to soldier through.

I have a lenovo thinkpad and my internal microphone works only when i connect another mic through the jack. Even the mic mute button present on my laptop is not working.(There is no such problem on windows se7en) Earlier, even an external mic never used to work. After some searching i added "options snd-hda-intel model = thinkpad" to my alsa-base.conf file. And then the internal mic started working only when an external mic was connected.
when i type "cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec" i get:
Codec: Realtek ALC269
Codec: Intel G45 DEVCTG
I looked into the HD-Audio-Models.txt but couldn't locate the exact model for ALC269 so i searched online and decided to put model = thinkpad as i'd mentioned earlier. But The alsa-mixer shows card to be HDA Intel and chp as intel g45 devctg. Moreover, even this partial working of mic(s) is when i choose the input source in the alsamixer to be front mic and not int mic.

few days ago I upgraded amarok on my openSuSE 11.2 from amarok-2.3.1-1 to amarok-2.3.1-4 (with vendor change to OBS KDE:Backports obs://build.opensuse.org/KDE).Then I noticed that the lastfm service is not functioning. It was missing from the internet services as well. As if the plugin does not exist. Taking a look at the /usr/share/kde4/services I did not find any .desktop file that was referring to the lastfm service (as I found for magnitude or the other internet services in amarok). So I downgraded to 2.3.1-1 (vendor obs://build.opensuse.org/home:enzokiel).
After the downgrade I had the .desktop files, but still the lastfm plugin was not loaded. I checked the liblastfm and it was there:liblastfm.so -> liblastfm.so.0.3.1***ALAS*** it was the 0.3.1, not the 0.3.0 as it was required by the dependencies.A workaround I thought is to just make a symbolic link to the 0.3.1 with the name 0.3.0. So I did. And it worked. What didn't work is that when I upgraded back to amarok 2.3.1-4 the desktop files were still missing and so was the lastfm plugin from amarok internet services.
I share this for the following reasons:
1. Maybe other people have encountered the same problem, and this could save them time/effort
2. I don't know if I should open a bug report against this, or it is just a matter of how the package was compiled. I don't want to waste developer's time by investigating something that is not a bug, but a feature.__2a. I think this is an openSuSE specific problem, that is why I am posting it here.
3. Would the correct solution be a downgrade of both the liblastfm and amarok?

I'm thinking of installing openSUSE-11.1 Gnome on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400M laptop because the wireless in Gnome is much more user friendly than KDE3/KDE4 in openSUSE-11.1. The idea is to give this laptop to my 84-year old mother and things need to 'just work' for her (she currently has a desktop running openSUSE-11.1 KDE3 that uses a WIRED interface to the web).
I refuse to update this laptop to openSUSE-11.2 nor 11.3 (nor other recent distributions) because every kernel update after the 2.6.27 kernel has broken the Intel i855GM graphics drivers for that laptop. There are many bug reports and none have fixed the problem for this Fujitsu-Siemens implementation of the i855GM graphics.
Hence I am looking at Gnome.
I booted the laptop to a Gnome openSUSE-11.1 liveCD and wireless is easy and works great. But audio is very very VERY bad. It is incredibly user unfriendly and it does NOT work well. I assume that is because pulse audio in openSUSE-11.1 was very immature.
I note these updated packages in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository:
Code:
So my question is, did the updates to pulse audio (in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository) fix the pulse audio situation? Are there ANY helpful views on this?
Currently my wife is using this laptop with KDE-4.4.4 (and openSUSE-11.1) so I can't just install Gnome and play with it without taking the laptop away from her for a while (note the hard drive is too small for a dual boot of KDE/Gnome).

to start off, i'll post the specs of the machine:
dell inspiron e1505
3.2 gb ram
1.86 ghz intel core duo
ati x1400 gfx
opensuse 11.4 kde 32 bit.
okay, here are the details: can't play any audio with amarok when desktop effects are enabled because the minute a window is moved, it will distort the audio. even when disabling desktop effects, some applications still cause this. can't play videos videos even with desktop effects disabled because of the same reason.
i just switched from ubuntu and when i ran version 11.04, i had to disable kms to do anything. i tried on opensuse 11.4 and the audio was flawless but the gfx went all to hell.

I am having some issues with getting Ubuntu Studio 10.04 to work correctly on my system. Everything works fine except sound. I have a M-Audio Delta 66 audio interface and my onboard sound is disabled. When I run the command alsaconf I can see the ICE1712 card without issue. However when I run alsamixer the only option it is giving me is my HD sound from my ATI video card. For some reason it seems the ATI card has locked the audio to it with no way to remove it. I have reinstalled the alsa drivers for my card and can only see it through alsaconf. When I tell alsaconf to configure the ICE1712 card it says it configured it properly. When I run the command envy24control it says no ICE1712 cards were found.

Is there an application that anyone knows about that I can use to convert either an .flv or .ogg file that contains both audio and video to just an audio .ogg file (preferably vorbis+theora) without audacity? I'm fairly certain audacity could accomplish this but it seems like overkill for what I'm trying to do and the computer I'm trying to use does not run it so well.
::EDIT:: I should also mention that I've tried looking on google. I did find downloadhelper extension for firefox which uses ffmpeg to convert the files but I don't see any obvious way to strip the video.

I run a webserver Apache2, php5, and MySQL. They are all set up correctly and I can access my website at [URL] I have, also installed, noip2 to update my IP address to no-ip.com for my domain name. Here's the problem: I can access my website through that domain name on other computers, both on internet and on the same network. But I cannot access it from my own computer (using the domain name instead of localhost). I need to be able to access the domain name on my computer because some pages on my website have been defined as the address to my domain name and not localhost. I cannot change this to localhost because if I do then people outside cannot work the webpages correctly. I had the same troubles on Windows before and I simply enabled loopback connections by typing in my private IP address along with the domain name into the Windows hosts file. I use version 10.04.

I'm setting up a loopback server for work related testing. I have a small program that needs to be executed through telnet from about 200 IP's on the same network. On the server, I have to set a static ip, enable telnet login, and place my 2 program files in the appropriate folders so it will run. I have been on this for 2-3 days and haven't got far.
My /etc/Network/interfaces file is this...
Auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
The rest of terminal is filled up with these, and it states that the file only has 32 characters. I don't know if this is a privilege issue or not. I've read several threads on telnet, and lots of arguments about ssh, but I can't run ssh, so I need to enable telnet. There is not a security issue. I run a private network where the only valuable resource would probably be the text file with my IP address on it. Its also accessed by people that have very limited networking knowledge and no linux knowledge...
So,
Set static IP
Setup telnet server...
Any takers?

So I have an Ubuntu server setup but my modem from my ISP only has one ethernet port so I have to run my server behind a router. I have been able to get the sever viewable to everyone outside of my network but when someone is inside my network they have to view the server by the direct IP the web address doesnt work nor does the actual static IP. I believe this is something to do with my router not being able to loopback. It is a belkin N600 DB.

I can successfully select sources and view preview etc. However, the bottom status line permanently states "no output". There is no vloopback device to select in Cheese, camstream, Skype, AMsn etc. Does anyone know how I can get the loopback device to work?
I have added my username to the group "video"
I only have /dev/video0 - should there be another module for the loopback device?

Why does the loopback interface has such a high mtu? I get it that it needs to work out even large packets, which is logical but why this specific number? I can set the MTU even higher with the ip link command, so it's not a limitation of the variable used.
