General :: Set A Higher Resolution Than 800x600 In VirtualBox Without Using Guest Additions?

Nov 25, 2010

There is no shortage of questions about increasing the VirtualBox resolution to more than 800x600 with a Linux guest OS, but every time the proposed solution was "install Guest additions".I want the VM to be as simple and as portable as possible, so I would prefer not to install "Guest additions" which seem to fail after each kernel upgrade, which have to be uninstalled before a VBox upgrade etc.Is there a way to increase the resolution to something greater than 800x600 without Guest additions? Why can WinXP set 1024x768 without guest additions?

General :: Screen Resolution Settings Higher Than 800x600 With Ubuntu 10.04 Inside Virtual PC

Oct 3, 2010

This is my first posting as a Linux Newbie. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 inside of a MS Virtual PC on my Vista machine. Everything seems to work beautifully and is stable. However, I would like to use a resolution higher than the current maximum of 800x600. I've poked around on the web and have tried various tips. I tried using the xrandr options which added a higher resolution mode, but when I would try to set the output to that resolution, I would get an error message to the effect that I could not exceed the current maximum of 800x600.

I tried to cobble parameter values together and create an xorg.conf file, but every iteration seems to produce a bunch of colorful vertical bars within my Virtual PC window, and I would have to blow away that virtual PC setup and rebuild it (along with reinstalling Ubuntu). As I said, 800x600 is not a show stopper, but I would like to take advantage of the real estate I have with my display. These "fifty-five year old" eyes could benefit from the larger size. FYI, I did take a stab at installing Virtual Box, but got the infamous "blue screen", so I would rather stick with what appears to be a stable virtual PC base.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: BenQ E2200HD Monitor - Unable To Configure A Resolution Higher Than 800x600

Mar 6, 2011

I'm currently using ubuntu 10.04 version. I've recently purchased a BenQ E2200HD monitor. However, the monitor is unable to configure a resolution higher than 800x600. I've tried changing it via 'preferences' - 'monitor' etc. The monitor model is 'unknown'. and the highest resolution available is the 800x600.

I've tried changing it manually, but it says x.cong file does not exist. Xrandr doesnt seem to work either. Or i would get CTRC 262. My current set up is, intel i5 2600, 4GB Ram, Nvidia GTS 240. I'm pretty certain, my graphics card (despite being in the low end) can support HD resolution. Even if it can't, it surely can support a resolution higher than 800x600.

Ubuntu :: Changing A Display Resolution If You Have A Higher Resolution In 9.1?

Dec 7, 2009

I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, and was just wondering if there is a problem if you load Ubuntu 9.1 and have a display that's higher than 1024x768. I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.

Ubuntu :: Xorg Doesn't Detect Monitor / Won't Display Higher Than 800x600 On A 1400x900 Monitor

Apr 3, 2010

I installed Karmic on an older PC I had laying around, and the only trouble I am having is with screen resolution. It uses an old ATI chipset (onboard) for video, and it doesn't seem to do EDID correctly, so I can't display anything higher than 800x600. I have tried creating an xorg.conf, but it's still not working. How can I tell Xorg to ignore the fact it can't detect a widescreen monitor and display something larger than 800x600? I noticed the log says the sync's are out of range, but I am not sure how to fix it.

Here is my current xorg.conf.

Ubuntu :: Display Limited To 800x600 Screen Resolution On 9.04 On LG Flatron L1718S

Oct 3, 2010

I'm a faithful user of Ubuntu Linux, especially 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. I have a problem with my screen resolution on my LG Flatron L1718S. It's a 17 inch and its recommended resolution is 1280x1024.I was on this resolution all along until now. Now I'm limited to 800x600 resolution. Here's what happened. Before installing Ubuntu 9.04 on a friend's computer, I put in his Seagate 40 Gig hard drive into his Intel Celeron Box with a 2.93 GHz and 512MB ram. I then plugged my monitor into his system. Upon booting, I discovered that the hard drive had a very strange looking operating system called OS2 Warp...seemed like Black XP to me. On the desktop, the icons were so big and bloated, the mouse was frozen, there was so much eyecandy which demanded so much graphics resources.

His graphics card is an onboard one, framebuffer. I then rebooted the machine, this time running the Ubuntu 9.04 live CD. Resolution still ok, with 1024x768 this time. I installed Ubuntu 9.04 and finished. I shut down the machine, unplugged my monitor and plugged it back into my machine, which is a Intel Celeron with a 2.4GHz processor, 1,5GB RAM, 80GIG X 2 Seagate IDE hard Drives, 2 DVD Drives, an LG Spermulti-DVD rewriter and a BENQ DC W2000 rewriter. My graphics card is NVidia GeForce NV34 FX5200 Series, 256MB RAM Graphics Card. Suddenly everything on the desktop is so large, and the maximum resolution now is 800x600. It becomes 640x480 if i add Nvidia drivers, version 173. If I switch over to Windows XP, Service Pack 2, I have no resolution issues there. Nvidia drivers are loaded there as well. No issues with resolution there. To test the screen again, I plugged my monitor back into my friends computer that I mentioned earlier on. The resolution is stuck on 800x600. After plugging the monitor back to my computer, I tried to edit the X.conf using "sudo nano", adding the desired parameters, like undetected screen resolutions, monitor name, device, etc, but nothing worked.

I always had to resort to the backed up configuration file for XOrg. The latest Ubuntu 10,04 Lucid Lynx picks up my monitor with a maximum resolution of 1024x768.The Mandriva One 2008 Live CD also gave me the same result like Ubuntu 10.04, this time giving me more higher resolution options. Strangely enough, from my Ubuntu 9,04 and older, after several tests, the resolution is still stuck to 800x600. When I press the AUTO RESET button on my monitor, the screen says "Processing image Auto Adjustment-For Optimal display, change resolution to 1280x1024". A factory reset did not help. The resolution was perfect until I plugged my monitor into my friend's computer, the one with the 2,93GHz processor. I took another friend's monitor, a HP Cathode Tube Monitor, a 17 inch as well, and plugged it to my machine to test the resolution. The results were glorious! All resolution options were shown, from the lowest "320x240" to beyond "1280x1024". Plugged it back to mine, the same result showed: 800x600 resolution, the lowest being 320x240. I kindly ask for advice on how I can be able to get all the screen resolution options available on my Ubuntu 9.04, like before, because it shows the maximum of800x600, lowest- 320x240 on "display" in "System--Preferences".

Fedora Hardware :: Can't Set The Resolution Higher Than 1024x768

Dec 27, 2010

My graphics card just died so I bought a Radeon HD 4350. My monitor is an Acer AL1916W whose default resolution is 1440x900. So I reinstalled Fedora 14 with KDE but I can't set the resolution higher than 1024x768 because that is the highest available.

Code:
[corneliu@localhost ~]$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Xpress 200 Host Bridge (rev 01)
00:02.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS480 PCI-X Root Port
00:11.0 IDE interface: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 Serial ATA Controller (rev 80)

[Code].....

I rebooted but still no dice. I saw a video on ..... using a graphical tool to modify the monitor settings but it seemed to be a Gtk application and I rather not use Gnome applications in KDE (not that I don't like Gnome, but I don't like to mix applications).
