General :: HDTV Not Getting Any Resolution Higher Than 800x600 / When Used As Monitor?
Feb 9, 2011
Okay, so here is the deal I have been using Ubuntu for awhile as a network monitoring system and have now changed it to being my main system and was wondering why when my machine is hooked up to my HDTV via a VGA port on the back of VIZIO television, I am only getting a max resolution of 800x600? If anyone can help me with this problem it would be awesome.Any additional information needed please include you terminal commands because I am still just so terrible with those.

I'm currently using ubuntu 10.04 version. I've recently purchased a BenQ E2200HD monitor. However, the monitor is unable to configure a resolution higher than 800x600. I've tried changing it via 'preferences' - 'monitor' etc. The monitor model is 'unknown'. and the highest resolution available is the 800x600.
I've tried changing it manually, but it says x.cong file does not exist. Xrandr doesnt seem to work either. Or i would get CTRC 262. My current set up is, intel i5 2600, 4GB Ram, Nvidia GTS 240. I'm pretty certain, my graphics card (despite being in the low end) can support HD resolution. Even if it can't, it surely can support a resolution higher than 800x600.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 as a virtual machine under my Win7 windows. Everything is OK except that I can not get resolution higher than 800*600. Actually there are two options in Display Settings Menu 800*600 and 640*480. But my laptop has 15.4 inch monitor so its normal resolution is 1280*800.

There is no shortage of questions about increasing the VirtualBox resolution to more than 800x600 with a Linux guest OS, but every time the proposed solution was "install Guest additions".I want the VM to be as simple and as portable as possible, so I would prefer not to install "Guest additions" which seem to fail after each kernel upgrade, which have to be uninstalled before a VBox upgrade etc.Is there a way to increase the resolution to something greater than 800x600 without Guest additions? Why can WinXP set 1024x768 without guest additions?

This is my first posting as a Linux Newbie. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 inside of a MS Virtual PC on my Vista machine. Everything seems to work beautifully and is stable. However, I would like to use a resolution higher than the current maximum of 800x600. I've poked around on the web and have tried various tips. I tried using the xrandr options which added a higher resolution mode, but when I would try to set the output to that resolution, I would get an error message to the effect that I could not exceed the current maximum of 800x600.
I tried to cobble parameter values together and create an xorg.conf file, but every iteration seems to produce a bunch of colorful vertical bars within my Virtual PC window, and I would have to blow away that virtual PC setup and rebuild it (along with reinstalling Ubuntu). As I said, 800x600 is not a show stopper, but I would like to take advantage of the real estate I have with my display. These "fifty-five year old" eyes could benefit from the larger size. FYI, I did take a stab at installing Virtual Box, but got the infamous "blue screen", so I would rather stick with what appears to be a stable virtual PC base.

I installed Karmic on an older PC I had laying around, and the only trouble I am having is with screen resolution. It uses an old ATI chipset (onboard) for video, and it doesn't seem to do EDID correctly, so I can't display anything higher than 800x600. I have tried creating an xorg.conf, but it's still not working. How can I tell Xorg to ignore the fact it can't detect a widescreen monitor and display something larger than 800x600? I noticed the log says the sync's are out of range, but I am not sure how to fix it.
Here is my current xorg.conf.
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

Here are my stats:
Distro: Kubuntu 8.04
Video: Nvidia 7200 w/ 256mb
RAM: 2gb
What happened: I allowed two weeks to pass before running a full scale update of the kernel, KDE, video driver, and various other apps. The update went through and it prompted for a reboot. Once I did, KDE wouldn't load and it halted.
So I logged in via tty4 and checked out the xorg.conf file. It was really basic and figured I had to reconfigure.. So I ran nvidia-xconfig, then startx. The setting was at 800x600. So I went into nvidia-settings and it said I didn't have a video card with an nvidia gpu.
I copied an old backup xorg.conf and restarted X. Then into nvidia-settings but it wouldn't allow me to set the resolution higher than 800x600. At this point, I began searching forums for fixes. There was mention of envy. So I found it in the repositories and installed it. Still, I couldn't fix the res. So now I'm stuck and asking for assistance. Maybe it is really simple. I just wish I saved my old xorg.conf file before running the update.

I have just installed Fedora 10 and all went well except that the resolution is set to 1024x768, which is not cool on a 22" HP w2207h LCD monitor. When I bring up Monitor Resolution Setting the Mirror Screens is checked and 1024x768 is the highest resolution. If I uncheck Mirror Screens and select "Laptop" I am able to select 1680x1050, but it now has my desktop in the upper left hand corner of my monitor. Should I be looking for a driver for my i845G graphics processor?
PS: I am new to using Linux please be patient with my ignorance.

I've got a little problem with my 9" netbook. It came preinstalled with Ubuntu (factory install), but I reinstalled it to get a fresh karmic as it was a second hand. The problem is, whenever I plug in an external monitor, rightclick on the display icon and click "Configure Display Settings..." both monitors go black and nothing responds. Weird thing though, is that sometimes the mouse appears on the second monitor. I need a solution for this, either creating a xorg file (I have no clue on how to do that) or some other solution that works.
My netbook resolution is 1024*600, the external monitor resolution is 1024*768. It should be noted that I had a similar problem on another Ubuntu laptop (NVIDIA drivers), but it had to do with the resolution height. My laptop had 1440*900 and my external monitor needed to have the height lower then 900.
For further information, this is what the system profiler says about my graphics card:Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller.I hope you guys can help me, as plugging in a netbook to an external monitor (or TV) is not uncommon to me I like doing that, even if there's no point in it.I hope I gave enough information on this, I'm willing to give more if needed of course

I'd like a distribution with KDE.
I've tried Kubuntu, but I don't get any higher screen resolution than 640*480. The graphics adapter that seems to get me in trouble is an Intel based one.
I'm open to other OS'es that uses KDE -I just need to be able to use Kdenlive.

I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, and was just wondering if there is a problem if you load Ubuntu 9.1 and have a display that's higher than 1024x768. I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.

I have a Philips 19' HDTV I use as my monitor, I have tried every guide out there, including the wiki one with xandr. Nothing works for me. This seems like it should be way easier, set custom resolution go.. but this isn't the case.
Using Ubuntu 10.04 -
I've tried editing the xorg.conf and adding the modelines and changing the modes , I've tried the xandr commands. I've tried guides from years ago to current ones. I'm desperate, Everything is cut off like maybe an inch not even. Can just barely see the edges of the top and bottom bars.
I've been working on this for many many hours coming up with nothing every time. I wish there was a way to just resize the desktop.
Here is my most recent attempt at the conf file.

I've recently got a HDTV LCD display (BenQ SD3742), and a nettop (Acer revo 3610) to go with it. I connected them using an HDMI cable, and I installed the latest Ubuntu 10.04 64 bits edition.I then installed the latest nvidia drivers (nvidia-current package, which is nvidia-glx-195) to support nVidia ION platform using this ppa: https://launchpad.net/~nvidia-vdpau/+archive/ppaAccording to various websites, my LCD is FullHD, so I should be able to select 1920x1080 resolution. But the automatically selected resolution is 1280x768, and in nVidia configuration panel, this resolution is stated as being "native resolution" for my screen (its name is correctly detected by Ubuntu, by the way!).If I select 1920x1080 and "Apply", the resolution is changed but the borders of my desktop are not available... and the image looks deformed anyway. Is there any way to make Ubuntu to detect properly this LCD display in its real native resolution (FullHD, 1920x1080)?

I am trying to build a media pc, and successfully so till this one little/big problem. I want to be able to turn on my tv, and pc, and have the pc display onto the TV. Ports used are HDMI(pc)->HDMI(HDTV)
But for some reason Ubuntu will not fully load with just the TV plugged in (all i get is a black screen, not even a "no signal" message).Once a LCD monitor is plugged into the VGA port. Then I see a glossy white Ubuntu symbol on the LCD monitor. Then the Ubuntu loading screen appears on both the LCD monitor AND the TV. in mirror mode. And I can see the desktop on both monitor AND TV.
I am using an ATI RAEDON HD 4200 chipset that is on the mobo. I have downloaded the proprietary drivers and installed them. A few things I have tried are the instructions on this page, finding my modeline using a modeline calculator and also going off of a suggestion from a thread on this website, stripping down my xorg file so that the Xserver would autodetect it. Which i think I did wrong because after that, it wouldn't display on TV at all.

I just installed Debian 5 onto an older PC and cannot get a better resolution than 800x600. The PC is currently dual booting with Windows XP and in Windows I can get the resolution to 1280x768 without any issues. I checked the device manager in Windows and the video card shows up as VIA/S3G Unichrome II. What do i need to do to get this working at 1280x768 in Debian? I had Mint installed previously and it got to this resolution fine until I upgraded it to a new version, then it was stuck at 1024x768.

Below is a link to my smolt profile, [URL]This is my video driver Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family Graphics Controller. It is an onboard card. I have installed a new graphics driver which did not help. The name of it is, i915Graphics.tar.gz. Keep in mind I installed the driver after F11 wouldn't allow me to increase the resolution from 800x600.
