Trying to connect a computer to the internet with a modem, and I know the modem works. Was just used the other day with another linux OS.If I go into the Kinfocenter and look under pci devices with the current F12 setup, the computer identifies a 3com corp modem division 56k faxmodem model 5610.(which is a hardware modem)

View 1 Replies View RelatedA problem with kppp. It will not detect modem after a fresh install. It did last week before Ubuntu 11.04 turned up its toes, but when it worked it was weird. It found the usb modem on /dev/ACM0 as user but /dev/usb/ACM0 if logged in as root. Now it will not open modem at all. Gnome ppp has no problem and wvdial correctly identifies it.

Under 11.0 I was using Kinternet for a dialup connection through an external USB modem.Kinternet isn't available under 11.3, so I installed KPPP but haven't been able to get it to work. The modem and provider has been configured through YaST.At first with KPPP there was an error with permissions as a user. One old thread discussed how to fix this through chmod, which was successful for me.Now there is the error message 'Unable to create modem lock file'.Under configuration, use lock file is checked.
View 8 Replies View Relatedi have been able to get on line running other linux os using the terminal first i type sudo modprobe -r usbserial & enter followed by sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1199 product=0x120 & enter the last command is sudo dmesg|grep -i ttyusb. I have done this for years and it always has got me on line after the above i open kppp and select for modem /dev/ttyusb0 and click to verify kppp recognizes my sierra wireless usb modem and that is all i have ever had to do, plug in the usb modem type the three commands it comes back with confirmation the modem is attached to ttyusb0, ttyusb1 & ttyusb2 in kppp i click /dev/ttyusb0 and click quarry and get on line with suse11.1 it is not so the first command sudo modprobe -r usbserial comes back with a fatal error but the second and third command give me the same results saying i have attached the usbmodem to ttyusb0,1 & 2. but i cannot configure it in kppp.
i have tried researching on line but cannot find a similar thread. I believe the way i described above has worked on lindows 5.0, and it is how i do it with Mint which i can get on line with today. so i hope one of the wonderful millions of linux users will direct me as to what i am doing wrong. i am running amd 785 4 gb ram msi mainboard ms-7549 my modem is sierra wierless modem 595u (vendor=0x1199 product=0x120) connecting through Sprint pcs which requires no user name or password.
As of this morning I cannot open pdf's by clicking on them in firefox. I can download them and open them from the download window or even from the folder they are saved to, but not from the browser. Evince opens and says: Unable to open document Error opening file: No such file or directory.

I couldn't connect my Micromax 300G modem in Debian Linux. From internet (in Windows Vista), I came across the information of USB_ModeSwitch and then I downloaded it. While going to install it, I came across the problem that TCL-interpreter is not available in Debian Linux. Then again I restarted my laptop in Windows Vista and connected my Micromax modem and from internet downloaded TCL8.5.10-src.tar.gz. But while going to install it, I came across the problem that " configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH " . Also as presently, I am unable to connect my modem therefore I am unable to issue the code:" apt-get update ".

View 1 Replies View RelatedJust installed Fedora 12 on a P4 IBM. Everything installed fine. Then, I rebooted, installed updates, and installed a few simple programs (emacs, ssh server). I rebooted since some kernel updates had been made. I can't login anymore. I get a brief message at GDM that says "unable to open session" after I enter my password. Root also doesn't work, but I figured out that root logins are disabled. I found something that recommended disabling selinux, so I reboot with selinux=0 parameter. That still didn't fix the problem, but did initiate selinux to re-label everything on the next boot.
My next thought was that maybe my password got corrupted, so I went into single usermode. I ran passwd justin, so I know that my password is correct. I still can't login via GDM or on a tty.
EDIT: I was also thinking I might need to uninstall something that I did; however, networking is disabled in single usermode, and if I init 3, then I get a login prompt that I can't open. Is there a way that I can enable root login? That might be a starting point to see if it's my user account or a general login problem.

I Made a fresh Installation of Fedora 13. It shows VolGroup00 and File System in the Computer on desktop.
The size of the hardisk is 160gb. The file system shows some 4gb. I'm not able to open the Volgroup00. On double clicking it it shoes the error "Unable to mount location"
on entering fdisk -l,
It says the partiton one /dev/sda1 did not end on cylinder boundary.
The partition /dev/sda1 ends on Cylinder 63 and the emaing LVM partition also starts on Cylinder 63.
I tried reinstallling after dropping both the partiotions 4 times, but this is always the case.
I'm trying to disable the firewall in an attempt to get my computer to see my other computer connected to the router. However I'm unable to get the firewall app to open. Here's the error in the attachment. It just says a float is required. My only options are to redo, which keeps the same error coming back, or to quit which closes the whole thing.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed Fedora 10 and centos 5.3 on 30 system in my home office. everything works fine except accessing https websites. the problem persists in both centos and fedora even after changing firefox versions. what's worse is the problem is not resolved after changing other browsers. so the problem is not browser-centric. i think it has something to do deeper in fedora and centos. also note that i have disabled firewall and selinux but in vain. the problem is still there across all the systems. it's really a show-stopper for me.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI clean-installed Fedora 11 and everything was running well. I wanted to try Bacula backup program and so I installed the Development package in other to compile Bacula. When I finished the installation, I discovered a bunch of foreign language supports had been installed. I just erased them. While doing so, I must have also erased some other files.
When I rebooted, the bootup process went well until just before the login screen. The screen showed the Fedora logo, f, and got stock there. I was able to login remotely from another local network computer via vncviewer. I found that GNOME dsktop was missing. I logged on to Fedora 11 text mode by issuing CTL+ATL+F3 and did 'yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" By remote login from another computer, I determined that the GNOME Desktop had been restored. But the Fedora 11 still stil stuck just before the login screen. What do you think is missing? What do I need to reinstall?

I have been only using the free vmware server thus far for my virtualization I have recently installed Fedora 11 and am currently looking at using the XEN virtualization software. I am currently running and upgrade from F10 to Fedora 11 with the PAE kernel. Also I am using KDE 4 with kmod-nivida drivers. Now here is what I have done
To install Virtualization requirements I did the following: sudo yum groupinstall 'Virtualization'
I then also did: sudo yum install kvm qemu libvirt python-virtinst
I then installed xen:
sudo yum install xen*
Now, I read that i needed "kernel-xen" but it doesn't appear to exists a "yum list kernel*' only displays kernel packages and the kernel PAE pakages so I figured I don't need it I then started all the xen services and libvirtd service Opened virt-manager and added a new connection: hupervisor: Xen and connection: local
I get the following error: Unable to open connection to hypervisor URI 'xen:///': <class 'libvirt.libvirtError'> unable to connect to 'localhost:8000': Connection refused

I guess my question now is... what is the difference between the hypervisor: QEMU/KVM and XEN. Because I seem to be able to create a VM using this. My VM is an XP vm for work purposes to run some windows only software I would like to use XEN as I just have my mind set on it but I might just be ignorant and on the wrong track is there a how to guide for fedora 11 and xen? the fedora 7 guide i found needs the kernel-xen installed.
I recently upgraded to Debian Squeeze (6) from Debian Lenny (5). kppp was working in Lenny, but does not work now. It connects to the modem, and dials, but it then gives an error 1 (pppd error that apparently means "An immediately fatal error of some kind occurred, such as an essential system call failing, or running out of virtual memory.") Often the program freezes, and I have to use xkill to get rid of it. I can connect to the internet using pon/poff (via a setup with pppconfig), but kppp does not work. I'm a member of both dialout and dip groups.The file /etc/ppp/peers/kppp-options is set to noauth (it's uncommented, and thus working).

I just installed 9.10 and this is my first time using Ubuntu. I was using Kubuntu before and used KPPP with my Verizon USB720 wireless card. It's the type that gets internet access through the cell towers.I installed KPPP but when I try to start it I get this error:

After doing much searching and reading I figured out to open Gnome PPP from the terminal with sudo. When I do that it works fine. Also KPPP opens that way although I haven't tried it to see if it connects. Although this works it's not a very convenient way to connect. How can I get it to work without doing this?
Is anyone here using KDE4 and KPPP?
If so, how'd you get it to work?

I am connecting the modem over USB. The GUI shows me it is dialling the number, and then connecting to the network, and after a while ( it sends it 9 times it seems) it terminates.
