Jun 22, 2011
I am using 64 bit F15 with gnome in fallback mode with compiz.I see the clock in the login screen, but with no changes clock does not show anymore and i can't see the notification area (the four desktops in the right corner as well as the windows name). I have deleted .gconf and .gconfd (that solved a similar issue time ago), but it does not work this time.I have

I've installed GNOME 3 on my Gentoo Linux, it really awesome and I love it.But here is a little glitch that I don't get used to: The notification area is hide until I hit "Windows" key or move the mouse cursor to the right-bottom corner.Since I've some program use the notification to indicate their status (for example, my Chinese input method use this to indicate whether I'm in English mode or Chinese mode. And a program that show the CPU temperature on the notification area). It becomes a little inconvenient if I've to move the cursor or hit "Windows" key just in order to check those status.
So is it possible to make the notification area always show on the screen? Or is it possible to integrate the notification area to menu bar just like GNOME 2.X or XFCE4?Besides that, I would like to know is it possible to remove the accessibility on the menu bar top-right corner?

OR IS IT A FEATURE?
I've managed to ALT-RIGHT-click-add some launchers to the top gnome-panel. When i now click on a launcher the gnome-panel crashes(?) and reappeares, but the program starts without problems. If i do this two times in a row (1 sec diff or so) the gnome-crash screen appears and i've got to log out although all the programs are still running without any problems.
dmesg shows this: [14460.034820] gnome-panel[4428]: segfault at 18 ip 0000003810fc05df sp 00007fffcaae4c30 error 4 in libgtk-3.so.0.0.10[3810e00000+3fb000]

I have noticed on my netbook that F14 is running some sort of indexing service in the notification area. What is this, and how do I turn it off? I know what it is doing, but why is this just now important in F14. It is killing the battery life on my netbook.

After a great deal of pain I have Fedora 15 running in Virtual Box 4.1 on a older Mac Book Pro running Lion. When I boot Fedora 15 I get a black screen. I can get a virtual console by banging on the fn ctrl option f2 keys I can then use 'startx' to get another black screen but clicking around for a bit gives me the gnome fallback windowing. Is there any way I can force the gnome fallback to start up directly on a reboot?

i have installed Fedora 15 from USB and it error

GNOME 3 Failed to Load
Unfortunately GNOME 3 failed to start properly and started in the fallback mode. This most likely means your system (graphics hardware or driver) is not capable of delivering the full GNOME 3 experience.
.The interface is now Gnome 2. I have not change screen resolution 1280720, now is 1024x768.

I was used to use the network and battery icon in the notification are (next to the sound and date/time). Now the bluetooth, battery, network, sound and envelope icon are visible, but there is no responds clicking on it.Pressing the mute-button on the keyboard changes the icon in the notification area. Also connecting a wireless network changes the icon. But to change network is becoming impossible by clicking the icon (and I do not know an other way to change it).The only thing I can think of was whitelisting all programs:Code:sudo gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "['all']"This was the only change I made.EDIT: Icons of external programs do respond.

Just upgraded to Natty. After I've been logged on for a few minutes, the notification area (hope I have the right term) just freezes up. This means I can't access the drop-down menus for sound, wireless, battery, and tomboy notes. I've done a quick search and haven't found any helpful information.

i think installed Ubuntu 10 2 weeks ago and it was working as far as this problem is concerned and then recently stopped showing Skype and the internet connection thing that is two arrows when connected. Both items are supposed to be next to the sound icon. You can see the blank area in the attached pic. I also do not get the top bar and bottom bar of the desktop about every 2 boots. And why is it when i save to the desktop i have to go to home>desktop instead of straight looking at the desktop. Sorry this is all happening at once and maybe it is all related?

I'd like to know how to remove the monitor settings icon from from notification area applet in 11.4. You see, I'm using nvidia drivers with nvidia-settings program, so this little icon is irrelevant to me, also it uses up free visual space.

I have the notification area displayed in my panel. Normally, it shows one speaker icon, one battery icon, and one wireless network icon. But now it occasionally shows 2 speakers and no wireless icon, or two batteries and no wireless icon. Sometimes rebooting fixes it. But it seems to be random. This used to work fine, and I can't figure out what I did to mess with it.

I've just tried using my bluetooth today and Karmic cannot detect it. The dongle is blinking so I'm pretty sure there's no defect. I have the standard bluetooth packages installed. I've also tried the Bluetooth Setup with the:
Code:sudo apt-get install bluez && sudo apt-get install bluez-utils
sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart, but somehow the bluetooth sign still would not appear on my Notification Area.

I've got a very annoying problem with my top bar and the notification area. The icons/applet's order is completely messed up. The icon's overlap, some do not show at all, and sometimes some do not load (seeing a black square instead). Most applet's can also be accesed through Applications or System, but especially the wireless app is necessary to be there. Perhaps there is a way to get to it via another way then the notification area, but then I dont know where . The problem isn't consistent; sometimes it's there, sometime's it's not.

I am running Ubuntu 10.10.
I installed the Mac OS X Leopard theme. I didn't really like it so I decided to uninstall it and went to the default theme.
Now, whenever I try to minimize an application to the system tray, the notification area doesn't show any icons.
For example, I am running Tixati and I have set it up to hide it in the system tray when clicking the close button. Before installing the Mac theme, I had the Tixati icon on the top panel, where I could hover the pointer in order to check the download rate, or right-click it in order to configure it, but now, no icon is shown. I have added a new Notification Area applet but there is nothing shown there.

haven't seen this in years since I'm using Ubuntu, but might probably be just a single step to get it back and running.I have a notebook with Ubuntu 10.10 newly installed and since some days, there are no more icons in the notification area. Before it stopped working, I had to do a hard shutdown because the system hung. For now, i.e. when I go to a terminal and enter
Code:
