Ubuntu Security :: Create A Firewall And Have It Saved So It Doesn't Get Lost Through Reboots

Sep 9, 2010

What I would like to do is create a good firewall and have it saved so it doesn't get lost through reboots. I have read the iptables document and the ufw document but it's still a bit confusing.

What I would like to do is be able to browse the web so I need to have rules for that as well as https. I'm not sure what rule I need for DNS for DHCP. Other than those basics I don't want anything else to happen save for updates. When I get more used to it I will add more rules if I need them. I also want IPv6 off, for incoming, outgoing and forwarding, and my guess is that I do not need any forwarding for IPv4. Ah yes and I need the loopback working.

iptables -P INPUT DROP
iptables -P OUTPUT DROP
iptables -P FORWARD DROP

[code]....

Ubuntu :: How To Delete Saved Files On Log Out

Apr 11, 2010

I'm setting up a single stand-alone computer in my classroom to be used by my students at the school where I teach. I've installed Ubuntu, as it smashes Windoze out of the court every time.

I want the students to be able to log on to the computer using just one account: 'Student'. This computer will be attached to a printer so they can type up and print oOfice documents, web pages, etc. However, once they log out, I want any files they might have saved (such as a word processed document) to be removed/deleted from the account so that when another pupil logs on to the 'Student' account they start with a clean slate. I suppose you could call it a sort-of Kiosk account.

How can I get Ubuntu to clear any saved documents on log-out?

Ubuntu :: Using TestDisk To Recover Lost Partitions?

Nov 16, 2010

I had 10.04 installed in parallel with a bad windows OS. Used the 10.04 to pull the documents, pics, etc off of windows. Worked great. Then when I tried to delete the windows partition it screwed grub up an instead of just re-installing grub. I re-installed ubuntu, what the heck it was gonna get wiped anyway. I didn't back up the pics and documents. I did however have them in all the ubuntu folders for my pics etc.

I feel like total crap, anyway, how good of a chance do I have at getting something back with testdisk? After doing a "deeper search" I come up with multiple partitions but it won't let me restore all of them. I really dont care if I can't boot to a single one, just as long as I can get the data back. (always can use a live CD).

Ubuntu :: FSTAB Timeout - Recover Lost Partitions ?

Feb 21, 2010

I woke up this morning to a non-booting 9.10 computer. After my grub screen disappears, I get the familiar Ubuntu b/w logo in the center of my screen. My hard drive cranks for an abnormally long time and then I get the following error:

I booted into a live CD and opened up GPARTED and my sdb4 (my /home location) partition shows up. I do a check on it and it seems ok.

I opened the Palimpsest Disk Utility to see what it said and it shows sdb4 as Unknown or Unused. I can not mount this drive using GUI methods.

I did some research on the forums looking to recover lost partitions. here is the output from fsck

Code:

and the abbreviated output from fdisk -l

Code:

Disk identifier:

This seems ok too.

My next step was to try testdisk. When I ran it, I was able to navigate this partition and apparently see all my files. I then tried to mount the partition manually.

Code:

That also worked.

It seems to me that I practically have this thing where I need it without too many worries.

My question is: What is the next step to get this back booting again? I'm afraid of rewriting the partitions in testdisk until I get some feedback on whether this will really solve my problem. Maybe the partition isn't the problem? Is it something else and I've been going down the wrong path?

I am seriously f**ked up.... What can I do to get those data back. I haven't done anything to the partitions after data: no adding data, no formatting.

General :: Unable To Own Previously Saved /home Files On New External USB Drive

Nov 2, 2010

I have just had to reinstall my OS (Sabayon) onto a new and larger hard drive (dying old disk). I quickly saved all my old docs in /home on an external USB drive (formatted and then created an ext4 file system) before the swap and installation.

After getting the new disk running I connected the USB external disk. First I could not access the drive at all, but that seems to be fixed. Now I want to bring all my files back to my new /home folder but apparently they (especially the former MS Office .doc, .xls, etc files, not so much the OpenOffice files) are read only and I don't have permissions anymore. I am able to create directories on the external, and can move files back and forth, but don't seem to own many of them.Sabayon automatically mounted my external disk in /media/disk, rather than /mnt, so I've left that alone for now. After searching here and elsewhere for info, I tried a few things (below): For access I added a line to /etc/fstab:

Code:

/dev/sdb1 /media/disk ext4 noauto,rw 0 0

Here's what I've done to try and fix ownership already:

in /media I:

Code:

# chmod 775 disk

which gives output of:

Code:

media # ls -l
total 4
drwxrwxr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 1 21:30 disk

[code]....

I'm not sure what the total 4 refers to since there is only the one directory disk inside /media but I assume that's not part of this issue... Does adding umask=0 have anything to do with this, and if so where does that go?

The thing is, I'm having trouble with Gnote. Where do these notes get saved? I found a post saying it was /home/user/.local/share/gnote/ but I can't seem to find this folder. Unless I'm going about it in all the wrong ways, it doesn't seem to exist. Is my only choice to c/p all the notes one by one into another file type, or is there yet hope for finding the folder they're saved in?

Fedora :: Resetting The Saved Password In Nautilus Of 11

Mar 11, 2010

I have been using Nautilus file browser in my fedora 11 desktop to browse Samba shares of our servers. Let me explain my problem.

We have two users test1 and test2 who can access Samba shares for downloading and uploading files.

test1 has read only access.
test2 has read/write access.

When I initially connected to the samba share through test1 user through Nautilus file browser I clicked on remember password.

But now when I try to access the share again, its not prompting for password. It is directly taking test1 user's password who doesn't have write access to share.

How to get the password window back to fill test2 username and password.?

Fedora :: Sound Settings Not Saved (FC15 & Gnome Shell)

Jun 23, 2011

Not sure if others have noticed this. When I go into sound settings, click the output tab, select the sound device I want to edit and change the bass levels etc, close the window and go back in all the settings are reset to default and no changes are saved.

If I leave the window open and make the changes they are reflected in VLC for example, but if I close the window it again resets to defaults and my Bass is back at Maximum....

Is this a BUG I should report or is there something I can download to get this configured elsewhere or to fix this issue? I seem to recall something similar in Fedora 14 that was fixed, but I cant remember how I did it now

Hardware :: NVIDIA Proprietary Driver - Resolution Changes Not Saved On Restart - Fedora 14

Dec 20, 2010

I recently installed Fedora 14 KDE and NVIDIA proprietary driver for GeForce FX 5200. I'm able to change the resolution to 1920x1080 (Acer H213H 21.5" lcd monitor), but when I restart the box, I lose these settings and I have to fiddle with NVIDIA and KDE monitor settings until I get the settings back.

Here is my xorg.conf file:

Code:

Is this (in)correct? What else can I try in order to keep my resolution at 1920x1080? When I restart, it reverts to 640x480.

I didn't have this problem before installing NVIDIA driver, however, I had visual anomalies and slowness in video refresh/repaint whenever moving windows. I don't want to go back to that so I'd like to see how to permanently propagate my resolution settings through reboots of this box. I've search multiple forums with no relevant hits as far as I was able to discern.
