I had some important data on a ntfs partition and an extended one. I selected "create partition table" on GParted and now every thing is lost as it's said here: (it's just an unallocated space)URl...in the page linked above it's mentioned that testdidk can help. I have installed it. how can I recover my data now?
As I type this, I'm waiting (and waiting) (and waiting) for the Repair Tool Box, "Search For Lost Partitions" tool to stop running off of the install CD. I didn't actually mean to do that (I meant to select "repair file system!) and I don't see any way to abort it! How to I make it stop? (You can insert your best Deanna Troi voice there, if you like: "make it STOP!") Or do I just wait until sometime next week for this rascal to finish examining a THREE HUNDRED GIG partition, byte by byte . .. ?
my hard drive has 6 partitions, c for windows xp, d for windows 7, e for ubuntu10.04 f is a empty partition which is the origin of my disaster, so, please be patient to hear .i wanna install mac os x in my partition f,so i open the disk management in windows xp, and inadvertently deleted all the logical drives after parition f ,i,e, from partition f to partition h are all deleted due to my stupid mis-operation.
now, each time i power on the computer, it goes to a command line with "grub-rescue>", i had followed the steps provided by other people after google this, but none of them works, the error is either "no such parititon" or "unknown filesystem".
Unitl yesterday I have a pc with ubuntu server and desktop. Server I installed first. Desktop later. But I want to remove that server and use the space for other stuff..I mess with Disk Utilities and gParted and remove the ubuntu server partition. But now my grub2 stops working. How can I restore grub2 on the desktop partition and use the unallocated space for desktop without loosing any of my stuff? I have a scanner, webserver running, samba and other apps up and running on desktop.I can boot via live cd, and I get this on sudo fdisk -l:sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80000000000 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9726 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
The modem & router is a friend's place, and it was rebooted. Both his boxes (Windows XP and 7) work fine.
but I can't get my box to hook back up. I've tried rebooting, unplugging cable to router from both ends (my box and router), rebooting his modem (Rogers' service) by turning off and on power supply for 3 minutes (as recommended by Rogers).
Once I got the Network-auto to show in the dropdown menu (I have a radio symbol on panel across top), but not again. I tried adding and editing a network connection (both wired and auto) but neither works, and if I boot unconnected they disappear.
The only thing I can get to show is a black box to the right on the desktop that has a red x and says Network Disconnected.
Me and friend are both frustrated as I don't want to interrupt his working use of internet to fix mine.
I have never understood how to connect to internet really, but it seemed to have solved itself in the past.
There is no password on the router, and we are not using wireless (which we never got to work).
The Rogers Modem is a "Motorola Surfboard" (Black).
The router is an Airlink 101 super-g wireless router.
My machine is a p4 motherboard with builtin ethernet socket on back.
I tried to enable desktop-cube on unity, and when it did that it disable the unity compiz plugin. When it did that it removed the entire top bar that we has the buttons to min, max, and exit. As well as all windows default to the very top-left side of screen and under the the top bar so I Can not move the window ether.I turned it back to the unity plugin, but it did not work. Even tried to complete remove and install compiz and unity. This does not affect Unity 2D.
I installed Natty 11.04 - 64 bit and by mistake I lost most of the repository keys. When I go to Synaptic and click on Restore Defaults nothing happens.
I just need to restore the default Ubuntu keys. I believe I have the repository links.
my old 80gb pata HD showed a dual boot Ubuntu - XP on startup, although ubuntu never worked, onlly XP booted. Recently I tried to Restore a Macrium backup on one of its two partitions, & spoiled something. On boot up it says:-
I am having WinXP installed, and also installed Ubuntu 10.04, after so i wanted to remove Ubuntu 10.04, so i removed partitions from XP, disk management tool. The Ubuntu installtion partition also got removed. But also my two more drives also removed with the removal of Ubuntu partition.
After that i had restored XP bool loader by reparing the Installation of XP.
Now any one can tell me how to restore my other two drives, which i manually did not removed.
My low-down lousy computer crashed while I had two spreadsheets (Libre Calc) open. When I re-booted the 'tater, then clicked on the launchers for my spreadsheets, Libre Calc opened new, blank documents.
Is there a way to find the lost spreadsheets? If I can't have the whole things, then just the data would be OK.
I had 10.04 installed in parallel with a bad windows OS. Used the 10.04 to pull the documents, pics, etc off of windows. Worked great. Then when I tried to delete the windows partition it screwed grub up an instead of just re-installing grub. I re-installed ubuntu, what the heck it was gonna get wiped anyway. I didn't back up the pics and documents. I did however have them in all the ubuntu folders for my pics etc.
I feel like total crap, anyway, how good of a chance do I have at getting something back with testdisk? After doing a "deeper search" I come up with multiple partitions but it won't let me restore all of them. I really dont care if I can't boot to a single one, just as long as I can get the data back. (always can use a live CD).
I have a weird problem that after increasing the screen resolution from 1024x786 (4:3) to 1280x900 something (also 4:3) that both top and bottom panels have disappeared. I am not familiar with the keyboard shortcuts to much but managed to get a terminal running so I should be able to do some command line stuff but as I am not too familiar where to edit perhaps someone can give me some pointers.
I guess first step is to restore the resolution to the original. Anyone any ideas?
I woke up this morning to a non-booting 9.10 computer. After my grub screen disappears, I get the familiar Ubuntu b/w logo in the center of my screen. My hard drive cranks for an abnormally long time and then I get the following error:
I booted into a live CD and opened up GPARTED and my sdb4 (my /home location) partition shows up. I do a check on it and it seems ok.
I opened the Palimpsest Disk Utility to see what it said and it shows sdb4 as Unknown or Unused. I can not mount this drive using GUI methods.
I did some research on the forums looking to recover lost partitions. here is the output from fsck
Code:
and the abbreviated output from fdisk -l
Code:
Disk identifier:
This seems ok too.
My next step was to try testdisk. When I ran it, I was able to navigate this partition and apparently see all my files. I then tried to mount the partition manually.
Code:
That also worked.
It seems to me that I practically have this thing where I need it without too many worries.
My question is: What is the next step to get this back booting again? I'm afraid of rewriting the partitions in testdisk until I get some feedback on whether this will really solve my problem. Maybe the partition isn't the problem? Is it something else and I've been going down the wrong path?
I had two ext4 partitions; one had data and another didn't. I wanted to merge them using Gparted, but couldn't find the option. So, I deleted the second partition making it unallocated and used the 'resize' option to merge both the partition. Now, the partitions are merged but I LOST THE DATA.. I am seriously f**ked up.... What can I do to get those data back. I haven't done anything to the partitions after data: no adding data, no formatting.
I dual boot Windows and Ubuntu dual on my computer. I made the big mistake of moving a bunch of files directly from the ubuntu partition and now all those files are gone. How can I get them back?
I have downloaded some files and saved them in one of my partition. But when i boot back from windows 7 those files were not visible. So i went back to fedora and found that the files are no longer there then i tested by saving some other files in the partitions and when checked through windows 7 those files are gone. they are not available anymore....i searched everywhere through both OS but couldnt find it.
I think I made one tweak too far and as a result have lost my desktop - no top panel, launcher just a blank screen with my desktop background. I've created a new user and everything is fine under that account so I don't think it is terminal. which files I should delete/replace to restore the desktop back to it's default settings? I've deleted the .gnome2, .gconf and .gconfd folders but that has not solved the problem.
So i'm VERY new at this, i need fedora for this research i'm starting. I have a dell and vista was installed on it, then i installed fedora 10 like it said on the fedora site from a boot disc. Now i have fedora but i don't have vista nor access to the memory it took up. I tried to restore to start over but i can't, and i need vista back.
Normally i would restore from the 10 G partition dell sets up for recovery but i'm not able to get to it, and i don't have my vista discs they're back at school.
I updated to 11.04 recently, no problem. Chose to merge the old and new Grub files together. Rebooted to finalize everything, and my Grub menu had lots of doubling up of options, the old kernel, as well as two options of Windows XP (the old option that I'd put on Grub, and what I suspect was 11.04's recognition of another partition, as it was titled "Windows XP ... (on dev/sda2)")Then I fired up Grub Customizer, re-read and double checked everything, and removed all the doubling instances. All good. Shut down for the evening.
Booted up the PC this afternoon and my Grub menu looks thus (adjusted with artistic license, just so you get the picture):Windows XPUbuntu 11.04 (recovery mode)MemtestMemtestDell Utility PartitionWindows XP (on dev/sda2)I've lost the option to choose regular Ubuntu.I've gone into recovery mode, tried the "Update Grub" option, rebooted, but nothing changes. Now, there's a terminal login on Recovery Mode. I am effectively an Absolute Beginner when it comes to the terminal - I know a couple of commands, am eager to learn more when I have the time, but really couldn't tell you what the hell I'm doing. The last thing I want to do is make this worse by fumbling through code. This isn't Zork.If anybody would be kind enough to provide the terminal commands to change the Grub menu to add regular partitions, I'd be very grateful. If there's a different fix, equally good. If anybody's got any comments, diagnoses, verbal abuse, heap it on. I'm here to learn.
are there any sweeper / cleaner apps which can take back my installation as to when it was new. I know home directory could have config files etc..but that doesnt matter, i want all packages and applications reset to how it was when i had a clean install. I am using Natty
what could this bei saved my correct iptables file @ Code: /etc/iptables.up.ruleswhere webmin is looking for it.webmin config is to automaticly boot this file and addes a line at.
I used Ubuntu before, without problems but since the 10.04 version it won't recognize my partitions. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),
Xubuntu 9.04 installation CD not detecting any of the current partitions. This all started when I reinstalled windows XP a few days ago. After, the computer wouldn't boot into GRUB and would boot directly into windows.Other threads have dealt with a similar issue, that of overlapping partitions causing libparted/parted/gparted to detect the whole drive as unallocated space. The problem in these threads seemed to be a corrupted partition table, in which the partitions overlapped with each other. So of course I checked the output of fdisk -l for overlapping partitions, but I don't see any obvious overlapping partitions. I've noticed that the partition that used to be linux swap isn't showing up in the partition table at all. I might just be missing something simple here and would like another set of eyes to help me figure this one out. Does the problem have anything to do with the partition table being out of order (ie. not in order of what regions they cover on the drive)? From the liveCD I've run
I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?
I have vista and opensuse 11.2 on my computer, the problem is i can't open ext3 partitions from vista but i can the other way. I tried Ext2fsd but the linux partition is always in a read only mood even when i change this option. Also, all folders are empty I downloaded the program as admin and compatable with XP SP2.
I've installed Arch Linux onto my Western Digital SATA drive.I love it, best ever, however, I need the fglrx proprietry driver for better 3-d performace, and decided to create a new partition. I decided to install Linux Mint.Sadly, in all my noobishness, I forgot about the 4 primary partition limit (oops!) and as I have /, /home, swap, and /boot partitions (all primary) already installed, I have run into a bit of a problem.I resized my /home partition (almost 500GB) to about 225, and was then told I have over 200GB unusable space. Is it possible for me to change at least 1 of my primary partitions to logical partitions AND keep all the data intact (AND edit the arch configuration so that it'll still work) so I can install a second linux? I sincerely doubt it
