I'm dual-booting Vista and Ubuntu. Ubuntu freezes all the time, like every 5 mins so I don't ever use it. I just do a new installation every now and then to see if it fixes itself but it doesn't. It says that the battery has a low capacity, could this be the cause?it only freezes in Vista when I take out the charger, about at the same frequency as in Ubuntu.
View 4 RepliesEver since I installed Ubuntu Natty, from time to time, for no particular reason, the entire computer screen freezes, and I am forced to hold the power button on my laptop to restart things with a hard reset. I cannot explain why it happens.
Such an issue never occurred in any of the past installations and versions of Ubuntu. This is a fresh installation of Natty by the way.
Also, I can currently be running a lot or nothing and it does this. Thus, it does not matter what I am actually doing (ie, what programs I might be running).
It has occurred about 10 times since I freshly installed Natty 6 days ago.
I don't know why but since I upgraded the KDE 4.4 desktop from openSUSE 11.3 to 4.5, the desktop just freezes some times.
If i was listening music, or watching a video I can still hear everything and even move the mouse, but nothing works.
So I switch to TTy1, perform a init 3, then init 5 to restart all the graphic system, and start again. This happens without message, without log, and without clue...
Should I downgrade to 4.4 or this has a Workaround?
I have the problem using ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 they both freezes after some time say like 2 or 3 min after login ..even the live cd freezes too but sometimes it works (its strange ) and when i select the advance option form live cd = acpioff, it works fine form the live cd. however my 9.04 ubuntu ultimate edition works fine. but i want to run 9.10 or 10.04. how to turn off the acpi form command like in regular installation i have xp installed side by side.

Needless to say I tried it on my Toshiba NB305, and thought it might be good to see if I could also get better power usage from my wife's Toshiba A665. The problem is that when I run it on her laptop, it just totally hangs the system, and the caps lock light just sits there blinking. I am not sure why. Is it not designed for x64 systems? Any ideas, or similar problems? I think this laptop has an Intel i5 540M processor, and I am running Ubuntu 10.04x64 kernel version 2.6.32-29-generic.

It works slow, but the bigger problem is that after minute or so the connection just freezes.Then I tried kvpnc. It works like it should from speed point of view. But it also hangs up after minute or two.Tried to change MTU of my wired connection to 1500 - no good.Tried to uncomment line in /etc/ppp/options "mru 542" - no good.
Created /var/run/vpnc because it was giving some error "can't open pidfile /var/run/vpnc/pid for writing".From logs everything seems fine except for "nm-dispatcher.action:Script '/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/01ifupdown' exited with error status 1." in last line. If I use kvpnc it gives no errors.SO, how do I debug this thing or does anyone knows something I don't in this case?
When I'm running the laptop on battery the desktop freezes. It doesn't matter what program I use, it also happens when I just boot the system login and do nothing. I then have no mouse, no keyboard - so no key combination works. The only thing I can do is turn the laptop off using the power button and turn it back on. Usually the desktop freezes with in 5 min after login, but I also had one case were I was able to work for about 2 hours. When I plug in the power supply everything works fine.

Gnome (or XORG, I'm not sure which name to give it) freezes up not always, but about once every 24 hours after I close the laptop's cover/lid. I know this happens when I close the lid rather than open it judging by the time the clock is locked at. The cursor will move around on the screen, but noting will react to it in any way. Other services such as FTP and Samba still work just fine when the computer is "locked down". Without more details to why the problem is occurring, I have no idea what to search for or where to get started solving the problem. I have attached the XORG logs (found in var/log) in case they are of any use.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running stock Debian 8.2 with GNOME DE on an Acer ES1-512 series laptop. Whenever I attempt to go into suspend, either by closing the laptop lid or holding ALT when clicking the power button in the top-left system menu on the desktop, my laptop briefly flashes the default GNOME lock screen, fades to black, and then hangs there. Usually, when my laptop would actually suspend, the power indicator light would change from blue to orange and slowly fade in and out. However, now it just sits on blue. There is no way to re-awaken the laptop from this state, and I have to force shutdown by holding the power button.

I installed fedora 11 64 bit without any problems in my laptop. But When I installed a visualization software (OpenFoam's paraview ), I am experiencing crashing issues. My computer totally freezes when clicking some buttons and I have to perform a forced reboot.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two boxes that were originally used as workstations at a school - they upgraded and sold these.The two boxes are identical parts - Lenovo NetVista M42. I installed 5.3, installed RPMforge per the wiki instructions, did a yum -y update && shutdown -h now.The next day I turned the machine on and installed the UT2004 dedicated server. After a few hours I tried logging in via SSH - I could enter my user and password, but could not get farther. I rebooted the server. After another day the same thing happened. I moved the disk from the first box to the second and moved /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0.bak to ifcfg-eth0 but retaining the correct MAC address.
During this transition where the server "locks up" some things work and others do not. For example, if I type ping 4.2.2.2, wait 10 minutes and CTRL+C it looks like this (note the time of 0ms).

On every installation I've cleaned the MBR and made new partitioning at all for a single system. Tried to partition the disk manually and tried the "use entire disk" option with the automatic wizard. Same results on all cases, when the installation process goes well at all.
I've tried also to leave the computer some hours with the "GRUB Loading." message, but it doesn't move and remains with the same screen/text. Cursor remains blinking all the time under the GRUB message. In all cases Control+Alt+Del works to reboot. With hundreds of installations made, I've never found the same situation. It would be so strange to be a hardware issue.

However, few days ago, ubuntu being ubuntu crashed and since then, Thunderbird freezes after 10 seconds every time I try to start it, sending CPU usage through the roof. I have 8 imap accounts in it and my profile folder is ~2.8gb I tried purging the installation. I tried fsck on all partitions. Windows Thunderbird using the same profile folder works just fine.

Here are a few things I've tried, with no success:Leaving it alone for hours, hoping it was just taking a really long time. No Dice. Unplugging any hardware that might be causing a problem, including the network card. No dice. Burning it to CD, DVD, and booting from a USB key. No dice. Trying every combination of kernel options I could find in the forums, and setting most combinations found in the "more options" menu in the boot screen. No dice. Booting into the live environment, then installing from there (instead of just choosing "install" directly). No Dice. Booting both from the 32-bit and 64-bit ISOs (my machine is 64-bit)
Note: I have not tried just upgrading from my 9.10 install, and I will not try this. If I can't get a live CD to boot, there's no way I would voluntarily hose my current system by upgrading.
Also note: I checked the MD5 of the ISO, and did the "check the disk for defects" menu option as well. Everything checks out fine.
I have a Sony Vaio PCG-k195hp laptop, in which i've installed Ubuntu 10.04. Before installation i tried the Livedisk environment to make sure that everything would work out okay.
The results were fine, ubuntu even got the onboard Wireless card working which was causing problems in windows. But after the install ubuntu has become erratic. It sometimes boots and does a lot of work but other times it'll boot and freeze as soon as i move the mouse, or even earlier. I am pretty certain the CD was not the cause as i've already used it to install 10.04 in another system and i'm writing from it right now. I got the 10.04 iso on the day it came out and thought that maybe it wasn't complete so tried updating my install, but it had an error during the update installation.
Now even the live CD won't work as it hangs in the loading screen.
I installed ubuntu 10.10 and it seems everytime I unplug my laptop it freezes and the caps lock flashes. This happens pretty much every time. I installed fedora 14 had no problem with unplugging the charger but I didn't like it and couldn't get WiFi working right. The driver is not for the WLAN, but rather for 10/100 ethernet on a Dell Insprion 1720 laptop.
I've got a problem with my laptop and I finally decided to try to solve it. My computer sometimes (not everytime) freezes. It's just when I'm using battery power. I figured out that this is not connected with some specific action (e.g. some app crash), it can freeze 1 minute after start or 10 minutes, I think it's random. After some idle time Slackware hangs up/freezes. When, for an example, i turn on music i can hear it on idle time but after some time music still plays but i'm losing picture (monitor detects no signal), num lock is locked, led on keyboard are turned on but won't turn off while pressing num lock. I've switched off power saving options in Slackware and on bios setup.
My spec is:
X4 620 (without overclocking)
AMD 760G (Radeon HD 3000)
Catalyst 11.5 for Radeon graphic.
BTW - computer works fine with Windows. Also, with Slackware i can work for an hours, many hours and everything is fine but as soon as i leave it for some amount of time = it hangs/freezes. There is something wrong with hibernation. Not always computern is turned off correctly. TV is switched off, slackware logged off but i hear drives working and cooler fans. It should be switched off completly.
