Fedora :: Desktop Suddenly Goes Off - Blank Screen
Mar 19, 2009
I have installed Fedora 8 before 5 months. I normally use Eclipse, java, firefox, tomcat. Nowadays when I am working in any of the said applications suddenly my desktop goes off like a blank screen as if my monitor switched off. After 30 secs or sometime the user login page comes. I need to restart all my work again. I use gnome.
I installed the latest KDE desktop on my Ubuntu 10.04 system. When I switched to KDE the screen ends up black with no access to anything. I reboot but don't have access to the session manager on the ubuntu login screen so I can't get back into my Ubuntu desktop. What can I do?Embarrasingly, I had to log on via Windows 7 (its a dual boot setup) to gain access to the Ubuntu Forums
I might want to try and put a gui on my ubuntu server installation went fine however now I'm staring at a blank screen. ubuntu boots goes to screen similar to desktop (loading with the mouse cursor) and then blank... occationaly it'll load a partial username box but more offten than not it loads a completly blank screen and the caps lock and scroll lock lights on the keyboard are both blinking consistantly...
I was upgrade my PC's RAM to 4GiB on 32bit platform, the problem is when I set AGP appture size to 64 MiB suse was detect physical memory at 3.4 GiB but when I set AGP appture size to 32 MiB or lower physical memory was detected at 3.6 GiB but I can only boot with failsafe mode, desktop mode doesn't work and screen goes to blank and I want to use the whole 3.6 GiB.
I've upgraded from Karmic 64-bit kubuntu to the RC build for Lucid. I have two pcs connected to two monitors via an Aten dual head KVM switch. With the new release I only get a background slideshow on one monitor. I can get an image on the first monitor by right clicking and choosing Next Wallpaper image, but it never changes. When I select Desktop Activity Settings both monitors go entirely blank, except for the mouse cursor. The Display Multiple Monitors screen has ticks in all the multiple monitor checkboxes and Identify All Displays correctly identifies both monitors.
An ubuntu-11.04 laptop is set to turn on the screensaver after 5 minutes of inactivity, and power management is set to blank the display after 15 minutes of inactivity. When the screen goes blank, you're supposed to be able to move the mouse to return to your Gnome desktop. This works sometimes, sometimes not. When it doesn't, moving the mouse doesn't eliminate the black screen, although I can see the mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+del does nothing, neither do alt+tab, alt+esc or ctrl+alt+esc. ctrl+alt+f1-12 work as they usually do, so I can "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart" from one of the TTYs, or via ssh.
I tested just now with setting the screensaver and power management display blanking to 1 minutes. After a minute the screen went blank (backlight on), and then after a second or two black (backlight off), and moving the mouse returned to Gnome as it should. So I don't know why sometimes it doesn't. Two questions:
1- Which program can I run, or which service can I restart, to return to Gnome without having to kill gdm and lose all open windows?
I just put on my Linux PC now and after booting logging into the user a/c, it just gives a blank screen with the desktop wallpaper - no menu's or anything, so there's pretty much nothing I can do. I know I had removed the menu and replaced it with the dock (awn dock or something).
However, I can log in as root and root works fine (so I'm doing the update at the moment).
Coming back to my question, I used to know an Ubuntu command which I put in as sudo (terminal)and it used to work like a magic command which would literally restore and repair my linux installation - I even used it when I bought a new system and transferred my linux hard drive from my previous machine to the new one and this one command actually setup and prepared my linux installation to work smoothly in my new PC - just one command after connecting my h/drive in the new PC.
I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.
Suddenly, today my mouse seems to have a mind of it's own. For no reason, it's suddenly jumping and scrolling all over the desktop in rapid fashion and apparently left-clicking at will. Reboot does not solve the problem, although it became less after the reboot.
Updates today were:
This is a generic optical mouse that's been used for several years without incident.
So, is there anything that might have caused the problem or is the mouse kaput?
Okay, dug through the drawers and found a Logitech usb optical mouse. Giving that a try as it seems to me that the mouse may be shot.
I am suddenly getting about 1.5" of the left side of my desktop on the right, covering what SHOULD be there. I thought it might be my gDESKLETS as I had problems with this newer version before but removing it didn't help, so unless it is leaving something that is causing it, I don't see this being it. & I haven't done or added anything else, that I can think of, that may be behind this. I AM running the default drivers for the nVIDIA card, but all seemed OK until recently.
This happens the most if I run a application in a reduced size window or run a ..... video full screen. Rebooting seems to clear the problem for the ..... & max then min the window clears it for that. I'm using gnome on F14.
Lucid is not in testing but it's released. It seems it works now, with all desktop effects activated and switching users and closing sessions. The only thing I still don't know is which screensaver can I use if removing gnome-screensaver?
I am trying to install fedora 12 on my computer. I have burned the live cd ISO and it works just fine until right before it shows the login screen. I suspect that it may have to do with my ati radeon 9800 graphics card. give me some boot options or some such thing so that I could install fedora on my computer. Also some other specs
I am using Fedora 11 and when the system booted, the screen resolution and font size were increased all of a sudden. Then I configured the screen resolution using
Quote:
system-config-display
to the actual that I had.
But the fonts in gedit are still big. Although the settings shows the default settings that I search on several blogs i.e.
Quote:
Edit -> Preferences -> Fonts & Colors -> Use the system fixed width font (Monospace 10)
My friend was working on a text doc on openOffice and when suddenly his lappy went to hibernation mode. and he had to manually shutdown his lappy. The file his was working with is now blank. the file its self indicates that it is 0 kb.
My usually blank and happy background suddenly lists the things in my home directory. Well, it has icons for them.I have tried the gconf-editor, apps->nautilus->desktop drill, but the stuff is still there. Showed up suddenly about a day ago
Today, the power was suddenly cut off in my house, then my home Ubuntu Server restarted after the power on, but when I use my laptop to view my wesite, the index.html suddenly became blank page, I did clear the firefox cache, doesn't work, still blank, and I changed browser, to seamonkey, the index.html still was blank, so, I am sure that the problem is coused by the server, and then, I put the index.html file to a subdirectory, which under the /var/www/home/index.html, and then I put the address < [url] > ,then,I can view my website the main page index.html.
I have been having an issue with my screen blanking out after a few minutes (number of minutes unknown), since I reinstalled Fedora 12 (KDE) a couple of weeks ago. I have tried, yes, a lot of things to try to set it so that it doesn't blank out, to no avail. I have spent a lot of time on the Fedora forum seeking resolution, with a variety of suggestions, all to no avail. I went into System Settings > Power Control, and fooled with things around there and they didn't work. I tried xset and dpms and shutting them off. Still no cigar.
I can't explain how, but my desktop panel went blank, and is overloading the system to the point that I cant run other applications. I was able to run a Term session and confirm that the gnome-panel ps is using more than 65% of the cpu and 3.5 on RAM. I create a temp user to verify that is a user environment problem.
I was able to get Fedora 10 to run on VirtualBox. Since the system wouldn't let me set the resolution to anything bigger than 800 x 600, I decided to get the nVidia driver (I'm running the nVidia 8400m G). I did it through this guy's tutorial: [URL]... After rebooting, I see the loading bars and everything, but I get a blank screen with a cursor. After pressing ctrl+alt+F3, I was able to log in to the root and execute the "akmod builds the required kmod on bootup" under the "For GeForce 8 series" [URL]... After a reboot, I still get the same thing. Will I have to reinstall Fedora 10 and just not update the nVidia graphics drivers? I have a 20" monitor that has a resolution of 1600 x 1050 and I would really like to take advantage of that.
i had a serious problemafter i checked my hardware detected by using liveCD, there's no problem i thoughti successfully installed it on my PCbuti got blank/no screen appeared when it started up
Im trying to install fedora 10 on the ps3 but i get a blank screen after the media test question, i tested the media in this case the CD and it says it has no errors but when it goes to install it switches to a blank screen and gets stuck. Can anybody help me, or tell me what im doing wrong. Steps that i taken.
1.Download the ppc version of fedora10. burn the ISO-image using the lowest possible setting. 2. i made a foder in my usb stick called PS3 and inside has another folder called otheros then inside it has the file otheros.bld 3. formatted the ps3 using the xmb. to 10 gigs for the other OS. 4. install Other OS using the usb stick that i made, install successful. 5. switch to other OS, using the XMB through systems settings. 6. Next I see a cd , i click on it with a mouse, see two penguins two options install 32 bit or 64 bit, i choose 64 bit. 7. then i get a media test question , choose skip and loads from CD. 8.Switches to blank screen and nothing else happens.
My F11 system display goes blank after some time of inactivity and I cannot see how to disable it. It does not appear to t eht screen savers (all turned off). I have an NVIDIA card,, is it in the card?
Whenever I boot the system after the fedora 12 bubble fills up I see a blank screen with a blinking cursor. Though I am able to access tty2 by pressing alt+ctrl+F2.
I have seen the boot logs and it shows a warning:
Code: Warning: Deprecated config file /etc/modprobe.conf, all config files belong into /etc/modprobe.d/
I have an ATI Radeon 3xxx series card and I have recently installed mesa-dri-drivers.x86_64. I guess the blank screen problem is because xorg for fedora 12 doesn't support these drivers.
I want to remove this package using yum, but when I try to do it using "yum remove" it shows 95 packages that would be uninstalled with it. I don't want to remove those packages as it has some that I use like Konversation.
how do I remove mesa-dri-drivers and what were the drivers that were being used before I installed mesa.
i installed fedora 12 on my pc and I also installed the ati drivers from atiand i rebooted and booted back in fedora all i get is a blank screen that does nothing
After installation of Fedora core6, only i can access to Graphical interface(ctrl+alt+F7) only. When i press ctrl+alt+F1 ,F2, etc.only get blank screen alone with blinking cursor. My system configuration is PIII, Intel 810 chipset.
I tried to upgrade Fedora 13 to Fedora 14 using preupgrade. The upgrade seem to go OK, I didn't see any errors. But when it did the final reboot all I get is a blank screen. I rebooted in single user mode and saw that /etc/rc5.d/S99local -> ../rc.local is the last script executed. I edited rc.local and added 'echo "got here"' at the end and rebooted. It did print "got here" so I know all scripts were executed for init 5, it didn't get hung anywhere along the bootup. Why I'm not getting the login screen?
I have windows 7 on my laptop (Dell Studio model). I have installed fedora 12 onto my machine in the unallocated space, the installation went smoothly. If I login to the fedora directly then every thing works fine. but if I login to Window 7 and again try to re-login into fedora 12 after shutting down the winows 7 then the booting screen will become black (almost invisible) even though I can be able to login and can go to the desktop (which is also very least visible) if i click on suspend and then click on the power button then the screen will become properly visible.
When i use my computer (whether it's going online, typing, playing a flash game, or coding) I get these "Black Flashes" that are becoming longer and more frequent. A "Black Flash" is when my computer screen turns blank (but you can still see the backlight) and i have to press the NUMpad ENTER button, shake my mouse furiously, or click my mouse, which sometimes causes undesired actions, but gets me my screen back. sometimes the Black Flashes last a milisecond or 5 seconds or i have to hold the power button and restart because it won't come back on.
