View 9 RepliesI have just created an 11.3 64 bit image using susestudio. All seems well but would like to customize the desktop via my script that I have added. My question is how do I remove the home directory and the trash icon from the desktop? Or better said what is the path to removing the symbolic link, I cannot find the symbolic links in the desktop directory. It is empty, I do not see any symbolic links under /home/test/Desktop?
View 3 Replies View RelatedOn March 12, a link to initrd.img suddenly showed up in my / directory (what's that directory called anyway?) On the 17th, a link to vmlinuz showed up. Now, a file with an unreadable name and unreadable contents shows up for seemingly no reason. The only way I can get rid of the unreadable filename is to use nautilus as a superuser and move it to trash (which sends it to that big bit-bucket somewhere in the cosmos.) Can I remove these links and how do I keep the unreadable files from being made?

If I limit the max-depth enough, I get results. For example, in my home directory 'gt5 --max-depth 2' produces a listing, while 'gt5 --max-depth 3' produces a blank page.
I've noticed that the temporary html file that gets created in tmp (such as '/tmp/gt5.9035.kJVM08Y9/gt5.html' is a zero-byte file.
I can successfully do a du in the same directory (which is what I thought gt5 was using), so I'm not sure what to check?
I have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge.
The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg
cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home
export HOME=~/testing/home
cd ~
screen -S testing-home
# start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc.
# test revisions
However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about?
the above event usually happens to me when im logged in to xfce my screen suddenly goes black for like 1 sec then my background becomes my background in gnome.. what does this mean? should i remove the gnome or there's some other options i can do to prevent this?

Nowadays when I am working in any of the said applications suddenly my desktop goes off like a blank screen as if my monitor switched off. After 30 secs or sometime the user login page comes. I need to restart all my work again. I use gnome.

View 3 Replies View RelatedToday, the power was suddenly cut off in my house, then my home Ubuntu Server restarted after the power on, but when I use my laptop to view my wesite, the index.html suddenly became blank page, I did clear the firefox cache, doesn't work, still blank, and I changed browser, to seamonkey, the index.html still was blank, so, I am sure that the problem is coused by the server, and then, I put the index.html file to a subdirectory, which under the /var/www/home/index.html, and then I put the address < [url] > ,then,I can view my website the main page index.html.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was changing a few options in Compiz-Fusion today. When I saved one of the options, the X Server restarted and then suddenly, I had no taskbars or anything. I could run F2 to get a GUI Run dialog box to come up, but I can't run any GUI programs. I try GEdit, Google-chrome but nothing comes up. There's no taskbar, no AWG Dock, nothing. Just my wallpaper and I can't do anything with it.
I'm kind of annoyed that one little change can cause the whole X Server to crash and not start up. I tried booting into "Recovery Mode" but Linux doesn't automatically detect my drivers in this mode so I can't boot up into it. I've tried rebooting and I still get the wallpaper.
In TTY1 terminal, is there anything I can do to revert these changes?
As in, can I:
- Revert the changes of Compiz by somehow reaching a Compiz GUI (even though I can't open any GUI windows in GNOME)?
- Uninstall Compiz? (I tried this and it said it supported gnome-desktop..I decided not to get rid of it, any ideas? If I uninstall Compiz, will it revert and restore all the changes Compiz made?)
- Uninstall and reinstall GNOME? (if so, how can I do this?)
- Access the Compiz config through the terminal so I can perhaps find the option I set and revert it?
This is pretty urgent because I can't use my machine at all, so any help would be really really I'm still able to use the Cube and switch between workspaces (CTRL+ALT+<left/right>) which leads me to believe Compiz is working. I can also open the GUI run dialog, but just no other windows. I think Compiz must have an error and I'll have to restore to Metacity to view windows again.. any ideas?
openSUSE 11.2 with KDE desktop, I have been using vlc to play .flv files without any difficulty or problems for months but it has suddenly stopped giving me any image on screen. The video is "running" according to progress bar and there is sound but just a black screen. Trouble is I cannot pin this down to any particular update so I am asking if anybody else has had this happen? I have run 1 click install multimedia and there were a few files updated but still no picture. I shall have to go through all the multimedia chacks and no time right now.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been using ubuntu 10.04 LTS for the last 5 months, used tata photon plus for networking. Everything went fine when couple of days ago, after doing normal updates as listed by the update manager, sound went off.. to solve this, I had to remove and reinstall certain packages as listed in [URL] ...+documentation, I had to restart, after restarting, the sound problem was gone but the network manager icon went off, the modem was not getting power from the computer though the LAN wire was connected. To add to dismay, the mobile broadband connections that I had added to the network manager were gone. I tried adding the tata photon plus (huwaein) again but could not be added, reinstalled usb-mode switch data and related packages, but still the computer does not detect the photon as usb device. I have broadband dsl connection and tata photon plus too but cant use any of them.
View 3 Replies View Relatedmy pc is an AMD w/ nforce chipset mobo and nvida card.What I did is select the noapic and acpi=off and it booted fine and I was able to install Edubuntu. The system booted fine except when I'm already on the desktop, I can only see the wallpaper. no icons, can't do anything. I booted on rescue, there's no problem. I can do normal things. and by the way, nvidia driver was already installed.

Starting up today my usually completely free of clutter desktop is showing all of my home directory folders!If I delete folders from the desktop, they are also deleted from my home directory. If I create a new home directory folder, it also appears on my desktop. In effect my desktop has become my home directory and I don't like it.

When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSuddenly, my "Places --> Desktop" folder is identical to my "Places --> Home Folder". This happened by accident somehow, and the folders and files in my Home Folder "/home/rj" are displayed on my desktop, and I don't want them to be.
When I click on "Places --> Desktop" it's as if I've clicked on "Places --> Home Folder" (the "File Browser" directory opens, the location is set at "/home/rj", and the title at the top is "File Browser").
Elementary stuff for a lot of you, I'm sure, but I'm blanking on how the Desktop folder can be restored to what I'd like it to be (basically empty, except for a "Downloads" folder), and my folders and files kept off the actual desktop (except for the "Downloads" folder).

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy mouse cursor has acquired some strange background image showing what looks to be paragraphs of chinese glyphs (they are too small to make out clearly). This background image is contained in rougly a 1 inch square with the mouse cursor hot spot in the upper left-hand corner. The mouse cursor is visible, but whatever is under those glyphs is covered.
I've tried the mouse configuration gui -- but it says nothing of background images for the mouse. I've also deleted and recreated my xconfig.org file to see if that somehow got mangled. I've been searching the web for a couple of hours, but cant seem to find anything related to my problem.
I need to specify a different path to home directories on a particular server than what LDAP contains for the users, besides using a symlink. E.g. "/Users/jdoe" vs "/home/jdoe" I don't want to change the actual LDAP attributes, just want a particular server to point them in the right direction (Ubuntu 10.04).
I'm assuming it's something I could probably set in pam configurations?
After upgrading to Kubuntu 10.10 the icon for the ibus input method is not showing up anymore.
I checked the ibus-daemon is running, but I have no idea how to use ibus without an icon.
I've had no problems out of my multi-boot setup.. at all, and now all of a sudden (after an update on ubuntu? my JoliCloud and Ubuntu seem to do the same thing.. they show the logo then go to a black screen, doing nothing afterwards. i was wanting to know how to get this working again.. this is an Acer aspire One 11.6in AO751h. it's using grub to boot into it. i used EasyBCD to get it to let me choose ubuntu from windows start menu and it takes me to grub and all works(well worked until some update?) well.. even my windows 7 boots up just fine...
View 1 Replies View RelatedAs can be seen in the title of this post, I'm not quite sure what's going on exactly, but my systemtray icons in Lubuntu 11.04 are not shown the way they should. There's blank space between them, the equivalent of 2 or 3 icons, and the blank space is 'created' while starting up, as though they are programs. See the attached screenshot to get an idea what I'm talking about.I'm really happy with Lubuntu, this is at the moment the only thing that's bugging me. It used to be 2 empty spaces in the systemtray, now it's 3.

And I see nothing after the boot screen (plymouth, default one) display stays blank, even caps-lock doesn't turn on its indicator on the keyboard. hdd activity indicator on the laptop doesn't blink, only power indicator is on...
the only way is to press and hold power button to turn it off. restart and I see the same picture........
I thought that's hdd, because yesterday ubuntu froze completely on a ..... video (adobe I hate you!)
so I turned laptop off and started again (before it froze I installed that gdm "security-"update) and saw the blank screen for the first time.
then I booted into "single" mode, manually starting X OR GDM gives me the same blank screen with frozen/unusable keyboard, caps-, numlock do not word, I can't switch virtual terminals...
so I've reinstalled the whole system an hour ago. Everything went well!!!!I booted into clean 11.04 (except my configs, cuz I haven't formated /home partition). Then I restored my ppa's (/etc/apt) that I backed up from the 'single' mode... updated apt database, restored all of my backuped apps (dpkg --get-selections >... dpgk --set-selections <...)an hour to update everything. installed ati driver, RESTART, and what I see? BLANK SCREEN RIGHT AFTER PLYMOUTH.
startx from single mode = blank screen
gdm start from single mode = blank screen
I can't use ubuntu, PLEASE HELP ME fixing that crap.
I downloaded yesterday gdm blabla3, blabla3.1 and blabla3.2
downgraded the crapped gdm-0ubuntu3.2 to 3 and to 3.1 NO DIFFERENCE. I JUST GET BLANK SCREEN.
before restoring the apps everything worked.
and yesterday THE ONLY INSTALLED UPDATE WAS gdm
there are absolutely NO ERRORS in /var/log/*I viewed every file from that dir, that was created at boot attempt...no errors, nothing, just blank screen
