If Compiz works, does that mean 3d is working? In other words I can install and play games in wine. Compiz's website states that it is hardware accelerated and uses OpenGL. Does that mean 3d? I am running FC13 64bit on an HP Pavillion DV7-2185DX. The video card is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650.
View 2 RepliesWhat it does is, if you do something to change anything on the screen, for example, highlighting text, or switching from one tab/menu in an application to another. The screen doesn't show the change. The only way to SEE the change is to do something else to the screen, like grabbing and moving the application around, or scrolling the page of a website, etc. If you don't do that, you won't see what's really on the screen, but rather what WAS on the screen.
Another example:
*) say you have an application open with 3 tabs: tab1, tab2, and tab3.
*) Switch from tab1 to tab2 and you see no change on the screen.
*) Switch from tab2 to tab3 and you see tab 2 on the screen, NOT tab 3.
*) Switch from tab3 to tab 2 and you see tab3 on the screen, and NOT tab2.
Or, if you're typing in this box to make a post, and you hit ctrl+a to select all, you see no change. If you click in the box to deselect all, then it looks like you've selected all text still. The only way to see what's currently on the screen is to scroll the text box or page just a bit, or, if you're using an application, then you'd have to move it around on the screen a bit.
As i've said, the nVidia drivers are installed and working, as well as compiz, etc.

Also, i did BOTH the dracut thing, and the extra kernel paramter in the grub.conf. So, nouveau is blacklisted. Oddly enough though, i do NOT have this problem when using the nouveau driver...
Also, fwiw, i think that i should mention that i'm not using the "Desktop Settings > Enable Desktop Effects" method, because i always seem to have problems with getting certain features to work, like the background for the cube skydome, etc. How i do it is that i install a package called compiz-manager, and i have it set to run at session start. This makes all of the compiz features work fine. One thing that i've noticed though, is that on my other workstation, i haven't set that up yet, and it seems that is is NOT having the same issue. While compiz-manager was running, i tried to use the "desktop settings" method, and it crapped out and reverted back to the old school desktop. I then tried it again, and it reloaded compiz, and there is no screen update issues now. So it seems that you have to have both of them running in order to get all of the compiz options to work, and not have the screen refresh issue?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded Fedora 11 to Fedora 12. No problems. Tried to get fancy and add Compiz using a string I took from the fedora forum.
Now the system appears to be booting but then hangs with the cursor in the corner. I am able to get to a virtual terminal (Ctl-Alt-F3)and examined the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
I believe it is looking for an "nVidia.ko" file. I am not able determine what to do to get back to normal.
Attempted to rename the xorg.conf file but it didn't help. Not really sure that is what the problem is but I tried running startx and it mentions that file as a problem.
Any steps I should be trying to get back to the regular GUI desktop?
I have Fedora 10 installed. I've just made an update of my system. Things that were updated were a new kernel version with devel and also something with NVIDIA (which is my video card).
After restart of my system, compiz fusion no longer works.
I have a NVIDIA-Linux-x86-177.82-pkg1.run -file to manually install the NVIDIA-driver so the advanced features of Compiz can be utilized.
After install, the bootup screen tells me that loading the NVIDIA driver has failed. I also receive a WARNING-message.
When I run dmesg I get

im using awn as my dock, and i'd really like to get some themes going to make it look a little nicer. when i go to the themes tab, it tells me "You need to enable desktop effects (compositor) to apply and customize themes".So in compiz how do i go about enabling them?

It mentions xorg.conf which does not exist where it tells me to look.I can type "compiz --replace" and it does do something but all the window borders disappear. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been doing some research on problems I have been having and I have narrows Compiz down to being the problem. I am running the prop Nvidea driver. I can use Unity 2d fine however I cannot use Unity at all I just get a blank screen with the mouse cursor no desktop ever loads. I have tried switching between gdm and kdm. I have now worked out that compiz looks like the problem. If I issue a compiz --replace at the terminal I get the same sort of problem I get when I log into the Unity 3d. I loose my left hand monitor (it goes black but I can move my mouse around) and on my right hand monitor I can operate things using the keyboard but when you click with the mouse it does not work although you can move it around fine. Never used Compiz and I dont know if anyone knows any troubleshooting I can try I have exhausted what I could find on the Internet (A few exports of global variables but none fixed anything).

I have compiz installed, together with the CompizConfig settings manager, and the simple ccsm. When I change the settings in either of those things (or in System->Administration->Appearance->visual effects), no changes actually occur. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling compiz, and I tried a host of other things I could find advised for my situation. I'm at my wits end about this. When I type 'compiz' into the terminal, the screen, and all the windows, flash like crazy for a few seconds, and then the terminal returns:

I can't get any features of compiz desktop effects working on a fresh install of Karmic Koala. I've uninstalled and reinstalled with sudo apt-get remove compiz and uninstalled advanced desktop settings through the software center. I am completely up to date.

I'm using edgers ppa and its been really nice until now, this morning I updated as usual and to my surprise after restart compiz is not working anymore.compiz-check does not print anything wrong with my system.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been running an emerald theme in compiz for few months now and everything was running fine when a couple days ago VLC started acting weird and playing little static clicks every few seconds. Then the next time I booted up after an initial second of flashing my full desktop the screen blanked off a section on the left and bottom of my screen. When I logged in docky told me it was having trouble with the compositing, but when I scrolled over the spot where my docks are they were there. My arrow can be seen in the black areas as can the start panel when I scroll over it, but aside from that it is black and when I open I window the blackness covers it in that part. None of my compiz effects seem to be working.
I am running a pretty basic motherboard and I know basically nothing about this kind of thing but I looked up the built in integrated video card online : ATI Radeon - HD3000 Graphics, On Board Graphic Max. Memory Share Up to 512 MB. I have an ATI driver installed but when I look at my drivers it says it is installed but not currently in use. When I look at my visual effects page it is on none, so I tried changing it to normal and it says the effects can't be enabled. I am running a dual boot with windows and when I go into windows there doesn't seem to be any problems. I am running a Biostar A760G M2+, an AMD AthlonII x4 and running Ubuntu 10.04.
