Fedora :: CPU Fan Stays On After Suspend?
Jun 17, 2011
Hibernate works wonderfully, but when suspend the system the CPU Fan continues to spin away. Not sure about the case fans/hdd as their sounds are dwarfed by the CPU fan.
The system is built around a Gigabyte motherboard (model: GA-MA78GM-S2H)

I like to suspend my laptop when I close the lid. I have squeeze installed. When I open the laptop lid all lights indicated that it coming out of suspend but the monitor stays black. It is worse since I install the ati drivers for the card instead of the xorg. It did it with both but worse with nonfree drivers. I can get it to come out by ctrl alt f2 and the ctrl alt f7. However yesterday that did not work but that was the first time. My laptop is an acer 5251-1513 amd processor v120, and hd 4250 radeon

I installed Fedora 15 last week, on my main PC, and I absolutely love it. Defintely my favourite operating system. Now I have a few questions. I thought I would put them all in one thread, instead of making seperate ones. I did search before I posted, and I cant seem to find any solution to my problems. So here it goes.
First question, I am using evolution for my e-mail program/client. My email addresses are all hosted by hotmail. Now I have set them all up correctly, but cant seem to send e-mails(I recieve them perfectly fine). I am using the "smtp.live.com" server, and using SSL encryption. I have tried messing with the settings but have had no luck. Has anyone figured out how to fix this?
Second question, I play minecraft frequently, and I am currently starting the program via terminal [java -jar /home/username/minecraft.jar], which works flawlessly. However it is too slow(open terminal, type it in. I need a simple click), is there any other way to start minecraft?
Third and last question, What is the best way to close minecraft? I notice if I just close it(via right click, and close, or clicking the X) it freezes and stays open for a long time. Is there any better way to close it?

Using Fedora 14 with Gnome 2.3 Desktop utilizing Compiz and Emerald theme manager. When I empty the trash, the icon is still the FULL Trash icon. I tried using different Emerald Themes, and different Icon sets, but still the Trash Icon stays full. I checked the trash folder in $HOME/.local/share/trash and found nothing, no hidden files.

If I suspend this toshiba satellite, and the battery is or gets low it will wake from suspend to tell me that it will need to suspend due to a critical low battery. Which is pretty dumb. I've experimented with this by plugging and unplugging the ac adapter.

I downloaded Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop.iso and used the Fedora liveusb-creator to put this on a 2GB USB stick. Everything seemed to have gone well and it said complete; however, when I try to boot from the USB stick, I get a black screen with a linux copyright notice at the top and it just stays at that screen forever. I tried this on two computers with the same results.
I'd previously tried with Ubuntu and had a similar issue, it would go to a purple (if I remember correctly) Ubuntu screen and it sat that forever.

I'm running off the most current kernel for Fedora 11 x64 and all packages are upgraded. I didn't hit the suspend button at any time but it went down to disk (black screen, soft yellow power light) and the lid had to be opened again for things to work properly.

I have a web server running on my laptop(in fact , it's a netbook). But I found it always hibernate automatically in a certain time .(In fact , I don't know what's the differences between hibernate or suspend. So I call this hibernate instead.) I am sure I have disabled the hibernate function in Power-Management from the System menu. But it still hibernates as usual. So could someone tell me how to disable it ( suspend, hibernate whatever )?

If I suspend my notebook it starts the usual slow orange blinking indicating the suspend mode got reached. There is also evidence in the various log files that this works. If I try to resume it hangs a for 3 seconds and then I get the hdd-password screen from my bios and the notebook boots from zero. I couldn't find anything in /var/log/messages nor dmesg. If I first boot to windows (grub 2nd partition) and then restart and boot to linux, all the suspend works fine

how do i disable the screen lock after i wake my computer from suspend? i would prefer to be able to just wake the computer up and have it go right to the desktop, without having to enter a password. i used to use ubuntu until today, and i remember having to run "gconf-editor" and then switching off on "lock_on_suspend" under apps/gnome-power-management from the menu that popped up. i tried to run "gconf-editor" in fedora 15, but that doesn't appear to exist. i've searched around and haven't been able to find an answer, so i'm wondering if anybody knows what to do?

Starting with kernels 2.6.29.x and above (which includes 2.6.30.x and 2.6.31.x),whether obtained from "kernel.org" of from the "FC11 repository", none of theseresume properly after putting the computer to sleep (suspend)... in my case, via"pm-suspend".When I press the "On" button, I hear the fan, but get no video. And the fan neverreturns to the normal resumed, slower speed -- which it normally does after aroper resume.Eventually I have to issue "Ctrl + Alt + Delete" to reboot. So the computeris resumed to some degree (to have been able to accept that sequence), butnot all the way - no video (and who knows what else)Any ideas -- I've searched high and low. Are there new kernel parametersI have to be aware of when I do a "make oldconfig", and go from there?

I just wanted to check, I'm using nouveau on Fedora 12 with the latest updates and each time I wake the machine from suspend, the fan on my XFX 8800GT goes to full speed and stays there. I've read some nouveau stuff and they say that nouveau doesn't control the fan speed, so I think the card is running in a safety mode after wake up where it runs the fan at full speed to be safe. The only suggestion I saw for fan speed and nouveau was to use nvclock to manually adjust the fan but that sounds dangerous to me. I think I'll just go to the closed rpmfusion driver then if this is the case.

I have FC 12 install on a Compaq nx9600 that comes with a Broadcom BMC4306 wireless card. I'm not sure what my kernel is, but I have all of the updates for FC 12.Whenever my laptop resumes from Hibernation/Suspend my Enable Wireless check box in the Network Manager is greyed out and it will not come back till I reboot the computer. Is there any one out there that can help with this problem, as I do not want to disable my Hibernation/Suspend as I tend to forget to turn the laptop off for a few days on end, and this beast sucks a lot of power so it is a drain on my power bill.

Is anyone else having trouble with waking up from suspend mode? After bringing the computer (Dell Studio 1555) back from suspend mode, GNOME moves very slowly. Cursor is unresponsive for significant amounts of time - any open windows do not respond to selection... Effects don't usually go away until a reboot is performed. This evening, one such restart resulted in a crash, where the shutdown process locked at the attempt to shut down the mouse/pointer module..

Recently I've been working intensively in my laptop (F12 x86_64) and so I usually only suspend it when I move between home and school, so I can continue working exactly where I left.
Alongside with a problem (now irrelevant given the context) of sluggish video performance after resuming from suspend (addressed in another thread), I've found another annoying problem involving sound (it embarrassed me in the library): after suspend I can no longer use headphones! Sure, I can have them on, but the laptop speakers play as well!
I tried several things in alsamixer and the only option was to entirely shut the volume down.
Of course I would hate to reboot the machine, besides I imagine it is a matter of restarting some service.
Is there a fix or at least a workaround for this sound issue without rebooting the machine?

I am having a problem with suspend in F15. While the computer enters and resumes from suspend extremely fast (basically instantaneous), the whole system seems sluggish and unresponsive afterwards. The mouse cursor is lagging and some key strokes are omitted when typing. The animations in Gnome 3 are also very non-fluid compared to how they were before suspend. The only way I have found to return to normal operation is to reboot the computer. I have tried 32 and 64-bit versions of Fedora 15 with the problem existing in both. I also tried the latest version of openSuse (Gnome 2.32) just to see if this problem persisted and I can confirm that it did. Perhaps this indicates a kernel-related problem that should be reported as a bug somewhere else?

I just performed a clean install on a desktop (older IBEX model) that is connected directly to a Cicso router; this is a DSL service. I configured the Network during the install, and all went well, the installation script downloaded many software modules, I was able to set up my mail accounts, etc. Now, if I suspend this machine and log back on I notice that I am no longer connected to the Network. Clicking on the Network icon brings up the configuration pane, and the original network appears to be there, but I cannot figure out how to make it reconnect without rebooting.

I'm running 2.6.35.14-95.fc14.i686 on Gnome 2.32.0. I've been trying to assign a keyboard shortcut to Suspend the system when activated, but it doesn't work because to suspend the system you need to be root. The command I've been using for the shortcut is terminal "pm-suspend".I don't wanna set up the working user as root. Is there any way to get around the root authentication while suspend to make the shortcut work?
