I have a laptop that I wish to keep on even when lid is closed, but I am unable to accomplish this. Does anyone have an idea where to look?
System is Fedora 13 (Rawhide).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have done a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04. My problem is that at the login screen if I close my laptop lid, the laptop goes into suspend. This is not the effect I want. GDM doesn't respect my settings in gnome-power-preferences and I can't seem to locate any other way to configure the power preferences for GDM. I have had 11.04 installed before as an upgrade to 10.10 and I did not have this problem in that case.

So I have this laptop with a busted battery, I'm trying to get it into some kind of headless server, media topbox hybrid.
First thing I want to do is being able to leave it shut (powered on) in the corner without having to interact with it directly.
I've setup ssh and vnc so to login remotely and do task, transfer files and etc.
However there is a little issue with the laptop lid down upon turning it on, it immediately goes into suspend when getting to the display manager, which is 'lightdm'.
I suppose this is the default setting for Xorg and as such my custom configs for KDE only kick in after I login.
Question is: I never seen configuration for default power management stuff being done in Xorg, is there some way to disable automatic suspension on lid down?
Another question is: After the KDE kicks in does it always replace power options? I have setup a xorg.conf file specifying dpms options but these don't seem to remain.
System is a Dell E7440, with Jessie, I recently upgraded to kernel 4.2.5 due to issues with wireless that are supposed to be fixed. (The same issue exists with jessie stock kernel 3.16 and BPO tough)

The awkward thing is tough, software suspend by running "systemctl suspend" works perfectly and always.

So despite the mysterious issue with acpi device 40, how is real lid close different from "systemctl suspend"? And can I simply workaround the issue by making such a suspend when the lid closes?
When I close the lid on my Macbook Pro 5,2 running Ubuntu 10.04 nothing happens.. it doesn't turn off the screen, suspend, hibernate or anything. Everything that i've looked at says to change the setting in power management but there's no option there for what to do when the lid closes. I've also checked out gconf-editor and the setting appear to be right in that... so I don't know what the issue could be.

I have successfully used this with Fedora 9 in a striped configuration.Upon moving to Fedora 13 (fresh/clean install from scratch), I've noticed that it is no longer using dmraid. It now appears to be using mdadm. Additionally, I need to select load special drivers (or something close to that) during the install to have it find my array - which I've never had to do before with F9. While the install appears to work ok and then subsequently run, my array is reporting differences .. presumably because it is trying to manage what mdadm is also trying to manage. More importantly, I can no longer take a full image and successfully restore it as I could with the dmraid F9 install. Is there anyway to force F13 to use the dmraid it successfully used previously?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm using KDE. I installed codecs for playing songs today, and tried to play a song using amarok. It didn't work, rather flooded my tool bar and the system hanged and I rebooted. It was fine before, but after I rebooted, a new problem raised.
Every time I close any window, something changes, and the windows lose their title bars (minimizing, maximizing, closing option), and neither it can be closed from the tool bar (bottom) panel, nor can be moved. The Kickoff Application launcher is also not working. Every time i close a window, I got to log out and re log in. I tried to change in the System Settings>Appearance but nothing works, and even when I close that window, the same happens.
I have the latest Fedora 12 and just installed firefox from the software package manager
but every time i close it either by the x or tool bar it crashes and gives a message process /usr/lib/firfox3.5/firefox was killed by signall 11 (sigsegv)

I have messed up, I downloaded something about gnash through the repositories trying to get a flash player to feed my little house on the prairie on ..... habit(I know, addiction is sad). Anyway, it didn't work but now it won't let me remove it. I have flash player installed but it's doing the same thing as gnash by itself, I have black lines across the screen instead of a flash player. Is their some way I can force it to remove gnash?
I'm new to Fedora and not sure how things are done so please keep that in mind while you're trying to help me fix my stupid mistake. Thanks
Is there a way to force the NetworkManager to bring up the interfaces right way. I have a service( postgres ) that needs to have a network interface up when it starts. Right now it is not even through I have the box check to have the network interface active on boot up.

Since one of the recent updates, I cannot close the System Monitor anymore. Opening it, no problem. All processes are listed just fine and I can force close anything that gives me trouble but... When I want to close System Monitor again, nothing. Qtrl + Q, the X close button at the top right, Alt + F4... all do nothing. And although each time I see some disk activity, there is nothing in the logs.
Another thing I notice is that both dbus-daemon and gnome-system-monitor use about 40% CPU time each, taking the system to 100% CPU usage all the time.Luckily, I have System Monitor open so I can select the process gnome-system-monitor from the list and hit Terminate Process. I did not find anything about it in these forums. Anyone noticed this too or am I the only one?

Now that I'm connected I want my browser to run through the VPN tunnel created by the connection so i can access certain sites that are else inaccessible, but how do i force my browser (I'm using firefox atm) to do that?
When I'm on MAC of Windows OS, as soon as i connect with a VPN, all connection run through them. Fedora seems to ignore the VPN connection and just continues to use my home-network to connect to the internet.
So the basic question is: how do i use the VPN connection.

I have made a set of ISO CDs for Fedora 11. I put in the first one (disc1 not the Live CS) and boot the system. This is fine. I choose "Install or upgrade an existing system". It is a fresh system not an upgrade. The installation proceeds - but it starts to download everything from the network, not from the CDs. How do I prevent this and force it to load from the CDs?
