Fedora :: Boot Randomly Hangs And Waits For Keyboard Input

Sep 18, 2010

I have a very strange problem with Fedora 13 on my home PC. When booting it just hangs at random points in the boot process. When it happend the first time, I thought the PC probably is completed frozen, but then I discovered that hitting the return button got the boot process going on again, but just step by step. That means on every boot I have to keep hitting the return button until gnome starts up, that's very annoying. So for any reason the boot process seems to switch to interactive mode somehow...

I already removed the kernel boot options rhgb and quiet to see, where exactly this happens in the boot process. But as I said, it seems to be completely random. Sometimes it's when "Starting udev", sometimes, when setting up eth card, when starting atd, and so on. It's different every time.

By the way, a similar thing happens when shutting down. It can take up to half an hour until the PC really shuts down. But it's usually going faster if I just keep hitting return after issueing the shutdown command (which actually looks a bit dull). But the PC finally shuts down at some point. That's not the case when booting up. I thought, maybe there's some kind of timeout problem. But even waiting for two hours, the PC does not startup without keeping hammering the return button

Software :: USB Keyboard And Mouse Randomly Stop Working In Fedora 12?

Jun 17, 2010

I'm running Fedora 12 on a Shuttle SN78SH7. Updates are all current from the Fedora repositories. I'm using the Nouveau driver for the Shuttle's on-board Nvidia graphics adapter. At random intervals (1 to 5 times per day), my USB keyboard and the buttons on my USB mouse stop working and the desktop freezes (i.e. GKrellm graphical data stops updating, partially painted windows don't complete). However, I can still move the mouse pointer around the desktop. This only seems to happen when I am actually using the computer from the console. It has never happened while the system was turned on, but not being used.

When the mouse and keyboard stop working, I can log in from another computer via ssh. Once the computer gets in this state, the only way to fix things is either to reboot remotely using ssh or to cycle power. I've run low level hardware diagnostics - everything checks out OK. This computer only has USB and firewire inputs. No PS2 jacks.

Ubuntu :: Boot ... Freezes And Stops Responding To Keyboard Input - Dodgy Package To Blame?

Jul 26, 2011

My trusty 11.04 x64 Ubuntu desktop machine stopped booting up properly about 2 weeks ago - it goes through Grub and into Plymouth, but then freezes and stops responding to keyboard input either on a dark purple screen, or less often the same but with the Ubuntu logo and the 5 boot progress circles but with none of them lit up. I can hit escape early on after grub and see initialisation reports showing everything successful (other than a fail on "Automatic crash report generation") - up to a line saying "Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [OK]", at which point it freezes.

Going into recovery mode allows me to fsck the disk (which is fine, and smartctl reports all attributes as fine), fix packages (which I have done a number of times, to no avail) and boot into safe graphical mode, which works fine, albeit only on one monitor and with very poor graphics performance, obviously. As the machine was borked and everything was backed up on my fileserver anyway, I decided to nuke it and give Fedora a go (I've been using Ubuntu since Feisty and it was a good time to try something else). Fedora was fine (and worked with the default nouveau driver), but I didn't like it, so after less than 24 hours away from the fold I decided to come back to Ubuntu.

At least a reinstall should fix the problem with booting, right? Wrong! The live CD worked fine, installed perfectly, and the machine behaved itself upon first reboot - at which point I ran apt-get dist-upgrade, restarted, and blam - right back where I started. Updated vanilla Ubuntu 11.04 will not boot. Has Ubuntu released a dodgy package that has broken my x server? I don't want to have to go back to 10.10 -

Ubuntu :: Grub2 Waits For Keypress After Failed Boot?

Jan 6, 2010

Last week I installed minimal Ubuntu Karmic with XBMC live on my HTPC. I'm connecting to my fileserver thru a wireless interface and although that works like a charm most of the time, every once in a while the interface doesn't come up during boot and the PC 'hangs'.

I then press ctrl+alt+del and the pc reboots and the Grub2 boot menu appears, I suppose because the previous boot didn't go well. However, the boot menu doesn't have a timeout, I have to press <enter> to continue booting. My wireless USB-keyboard isn't working at that stage yet, so I'm unable to continue.

This is my /etc/default/grub

Code:
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT="10"
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash xbmc=autostart,nodiskmount,setvolume loglevel=0"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

How can I get it such that Grub always times out, even after a failed boot?

Ubuntu :: Grub Error 15 - Unable To Boot Anything From A CD Because It Just Waits And Then Jumps To The HDD?

Nov 27, 2010

I decided to install Ubuntu on my desktop after the setup went well on my laptop and I liked the OS. I already had Windows 7 and Backtrack 9 installed on my HDD, so when I was in setup I took the 200gb partition for BT9 and formatted SDA5 to ext3 with "/" as the root. Then checked "format" and selected SDA5 from dropdown list and continued to install.Everything went smooth in the installation and I was prompted to reboot which I did assuming I would soon see a GRUB screen. Instead I got an error saying

"Grub loading stage1.5.
Grub loading, please wait...
error 15"

and then the computer just freezes. I've tried to boot from CD but I just get "CD-ROM Boot Priority ...Boot Ready" and then after about 30 seconds it tries to boot from the HDD and I get the same error.I've read that I need to configure GRUB somehow but I have no idea how to do that and I can't boot anything from a CD because it just waits and then jumps to the HDD. I guess what i'm asking is if there is a way to configure GRUB from the BIOS menu or make it possible to be able to boot from a CD.

Debian Installation :: Wheezy Installer Hangs Randomly

Aug 25, 2011

I'm trying to install Wheezy (amd64) from the daily netinst image with the text-based installer. The PC will lock up randomly at some point in the process (usually after about 5-10 minutes). The video signal cuts out, keyboard lights are unresponsive, and I have to hard-reset the machine.I was previously trying to install Linux Mint Debian Edition and had the same problem. Another user reports that this is due to a bug in the nouveau nVidia driver, but I can't confirm it.URL...

I assume the Debian text installer isn't using nouveau, so it seems unlikely that would be the problem. The random timing does suggest an overheating problem, though, and the fact that the video signal drops out would seem to implicate the video card. I had no lockups at all with the OS that was previously installed (Ubuntu 11.04).

Ubuntu :: System Hangs Randomly - Possible Hardware Failure?

Apr 28, 2010

I'm at a loss in trying to debug a problem I have with my media centre. Basically I'm getting random system hangs and when I say hang I mean proper hang - processor stops dead. No animation, not network connectivity, no keyboard/mouse response, nothing. As for it being random - it has happened during movie playback, during idle, after being up a short time, or a long time, it doesn't matter, so it can happen any time really. The logs show nothing suspect, except they just stop and there is nothing common between the logs of two failures. It happens on both my 'old' ubuntu 9.04 partition and on my new 10.04 partition.

The machine will remain unresponsive for 30 seconds to a minute, then becomes usable again, just with the desktop not refreshed. Nothing of interest in the logs when this happens. The last thing upgraded in the machine was the graphics card (now running a GTS 450). 3d apps work just fine, temps are just fine, and I have no reason to believe it's hardware.

Ubuntu Networking :: Server Randomly Times Out/Hangs/Disconnects

Jul 12, 2011

I have an Ubuntu 11.04 Server set up for my small office whose sole job is to run as a samba file server. The problem is that it randomly hangs. For example, I can connect the clients just fine, however if left idle it tends to take a few moments to work when you try to go back into the shared folder or drive. The client will behave like it is disconnected and is trying to search for the drive only to a few moments later, go right back to normal behavior.

If I ping this server while this is happening my requests will time out for a little while and then just start working. The same thing happens when I try to connect with Putty or through WebMin. One second its unreachable then the next its fine.I have already tried swapping out patch cables (which actually seemed to work for about 2 weeks) and I have patched it to an alternate port on the switch. The only thing I have not done at this time is to change the NIC.All the clients are running Win7 with the exception of two XP machines.Simply put, its like the machine just goes dormant for a while until you ping at it for a while to wake it back up.

Fedora X86/64bit :: F13 Randomly Freeze At Boot / Resolve This?

Aug 25, 2010

I just recently notice that my Fedora 13 is randomly stop at boot. This is a fresh install less than a week and with all the updated kernel and software as of today. I could not get much information from /var/log/messages (only about 3 lines at the time it froze).

It froze straight after it finishes the boot sequence. I can see a mouse cursor but that's about it. The last init sequence I could see before going to X was "atd" (if that helps at all)

This install is on a single Seagate 1.5TB drive without any other drives attached to the system (I rule out if that's problem with the other hard drives)
on Gigabyte P35DS3 mobo on ICH9 port
the mobo has AHCI mode for the hard drive
I got some bad sector on the hard drive (40 sectors)

For some reason, it kept stopping when I cold boot. Once it stop and I press the reset button it normally works.

I found another forum mentioning it can be issue with the video driver. So I here's further information of my system code...

Ubuntu :: Keyboard Randomly Stops Working Under 10.04?

Mar 3, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 since several months and I randomly have problems with the keyboard (PS2). Maybe 2-4 times per week the keyboard stops working all in a sudden. The symptoms related to this can be- the keyboard simply does not react any more to key press- during typing the keyboard gets crazy and fills the lines with the last typed character- opened windows move to the left when touching them at the top bar, keyboard does not react any more. When clicking on a panel menu the focus line is running permanently quickly through all items, and it's practically impossible to click on any of those (so even shutdown is difficult to achieve, and I might need to use a hard reset).

In nearly all cases the problem only disappears after reboot, just very rarely a logout is sufficient to get the keyboard working again. I googled for similar problems and found quite some people having problems with keyboard (and/or mouse) not working correctly under Ubuntu, but I have not stumbled over a similar error description as I have.Just some config parameters on my box: amd64, XOrg uses an Nvidia driver, 3D and Compiz are activated

Fedora Networking :: 10 - Nfs-utils Update - Waits For A While At Leopard's - Connecting To Server - Dialog Box

Jan 15, 2009

I ran a yum update this morning on my Fedora 10 box (i386), which updated the 'nfs-utils' package from 1.1.4-4.fc10 to 1.1.4-6.fc10. Before the update I was able to connect to the fedora NFS exports just fine from my Macbook Pro running latest version of Leopard on a simple home network. After the update, when I try to connect to the NFS export it waits for a while at leopard's "Connecting to Server" dialog box, and after about a minute I get a message saying "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct" (though my UID's are the same on both systems). My /etc/exports and /etc/sysconfig/nfs files were unchanged by the update. I tried restarting the nfs services as well as shutting down iptables and setting SELinux to permissive, etc. with no success.

I get the following in /var/log/messages (192.168.1.102 is the address of my macbook):

I was able to download the RPM for the older version of nfs-utils and then do a 'yum localinstall' to revert to the older version. This fixed my issues completely and my setup works as it did before. However I am curious to know why the latest version of nfs-utils breaks my setup, and whether it is a problem with my setup or if I should just wait for the next version to come out and see if the same thing happens.

Here is my /etc/exports file. If I understand this correctly it should allow connections from anyone with an IP address on my local network.

General :: Keyboard Activating SHIFT Randomly For A Short Time

Feb 14, 2010

I think this might be related to the changes to using udev or DeviceKit. It started when I was running the beta versions of F12. Then it crept into Debian Sid. And my Arch Testing and Gentoo also suffer from the same.

What happens is that I'll be working along. Then when I press any key it is as if the SHIFT key is pressed. When I press CAPSLOCK, some of the keys react as they would normally. This never lasts for more than 5 minutes. And seems to happen infrequently. I say seems because there are the times I am at work and it could be that the same thing is happening only there is no one on the keyboard.

The reason I pick out udev/DeviceKit is that when it used to happen to F12 beta, the other distros had not yet made the move. So back then it was only a F12 issue. Now it is happening across the board. And only started recently.

OpenSUSE :: Keyboard Layout Changing Randomly - GNOME In Slovak Language

Jan 30, 2010

I have openSUSE 11.2 with default GNOME desktop and i'm facing issues with keyboard layouts, which are changing randomly. Problem is that i have GNOME in Slovak language and therefore has openSUSE set durring installation my keyboard layout to 'Slovak' but i always change it to 'Slovak QWERTY' which suits me better.
Problem is that randomly system adds back to my layouts which are 'Slovak QWERTY' and 'USA' also original 'Slovak' layout which was previously removed.

I must always manually remove this third layout and it's very frustrating. Many times on fresh system boot it's anyway back and so on and on... Where may lie the problem? Why is GNOME not respecting my settings? In Ubuntu i never have these basic issues. Are there on system boot some specific SUSE triggers which are overwriting my configuration?
