Software :: USB Keyboard And Mouse Randomly Stop Working In Fedora 12?

Jun 17, 2010

I'm running Fedora 12 on a Shuttle SN78SH7. Updates are all current from the Fedora repositories. I'm using the Nouveau driver for the Shuttle's on-board Nvidia graphics adapter. At random intervals (1 to 5 times per day), my USB keyboard and the buttons on my USB mouse stop working and the desktop freezes (i.e. GKrellm graphical data stops updating, partially painted windows don't complete). However, I can still move the mouse pointer around the desktop. This only seems to happen when I am actually using the computer from the console. It has never happened while the system was turned on, but not being used.

When the mouse and keyboard stop working, I can log in from another computer via ssh. Once the computer gets in this state, the only way to fix things is either to reboot remotely using ssh or to cycle power. I've run low level hardware diagnostics - everything checks out OK. This computer only has USB and firewire inputs. No PS2 jacks.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Freezes Randomly - Keyboard And Mouse Stop Responding

Feb 4, 2011

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on other machines before and have not experienced this problem. Occasionally, the system will lock up. They keyboard and mouse stop responding (my keyboard status lights no longer respond, but my optical mouse light is still on). I can ssh to the machine, and it seems to work as normal. I kill processes that are open on my desktop through ssh, (i.e., Firefox), and I notice when I switch back, I still have the same frozen image on my screen. I have looked at the following files to determine any issues with the GPU:

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Mouse And Keyboard Stop Working?

Jun 7, 2010

I was having a problem with the mouse and keyboard randomly failing to work after upgrading to version 10.04. I tried both the 32 and 64 bit versions. The problem went away after I edited the file /etc/default/grub and changed the following line:

from
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash noapic nolapic"

If you are unable to open a terminal window, try doing the following

Ctrl+Alt+F1
Log into you account.
sudo nano /etc/default/grub

After saving your changes and exiting nano you can reboot by using the halt command.(FYI Ctrl+Alt+F7 gets you back into X server -- but you need to reboot for the change to take effect) Update: problem recurred. I had to do Ctrl+Alt+F1 to log into a console. I executed 'ps aux | more' to find the PID for X.Using the PID I restart X with 'sudo kill -S SIGTERM <PID>'.Once it started up again it was fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Mouse And Keyboard Stop Working With 9.10 AMD 64 Bit?

Jan 11, 2010

Disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard or the mouse does not . AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ PS/2 Keyboard and PS/2 mouse

Everything else seems OK but how would I know without the keyboard or mouse. The keyboard turns off right before the first Ubuntu screen. The Numlock will go off and then nothing. Tried to run dpkg - fix broken packages after booting to repair. All I get is fail to fetch http: (whatever )Could not resolve us.archive.ubuntu.com. Update: Alt-F3 ... then Booting to terminal mode does not disable the keyboard.

Ubuntu :: Mouse And Keyboard Stop Working When X Server Starts?

Aug 28, 2009

I randomly started up my laptop one day and the mouse and keyboard stopped responding once GDM's login screen came up. Everything works fine from the console, but even if I run startx from the login shell the mouse and keyboard do not work, even though everything else in GNOME runs perfectly.

I am using an HP dv6426us laptop running Ubuntu 9.04 (i686 architecture with the 2.6.28-15-generic kernel). Below is a copy of my xorg.conf file, just in case there might be something wrong with that. I will try and put more information on, but seeing as I have to use a different computer to post this thread, copying over log files and stuff is difficult for the moment (though I am going to try and copy them over to a flash drive).

Fedora Hardware :: Keyboard / Mouse Stop Responding; Replugging Isn't Registered?

Jan 23, 2011

Today my keyboard and or mouse repeatedly stop responding some minutes after boot. Currently the mouse stops responding after a few seconds of movement immediately after boot. Yesterday I used the machine most of the day, yet this issue didn't arise. Today I used it for a few hours before the issue developed. I did a full system update from the fresh install yesterday night. It's therefore possible that this issue has arisen as a result of the update, and that today the onset was delayed for some reason.

Earlier today I had the same problem with the keyboard. I replaced the batteries thinking that this was the cause. Now it looks like both keyboard and mouse are affected by the same problem. When the mouse stops functioning and the keyboard remains active, I unplug the mouse and replug it in, but it still does not respond, and only the unplug, and not the replug, are detected and logged in dmesg. I noticed ever since I installed Fedora yesterday that plugging in new usb devices after boot did not result in them being recognised, and that if I unplugged a mouse or keyboard and plugged them in again they would not work (requiring a hard reset). Currently the machine isn't usable as I cannot use the mouse for more than a few seconds. I haven't tried a PS2 connection, and currently I have keyboard access.

Hardware:

Fujitsu LZ945230BH1 USB Mouse
Microsoft Arc Bluetooth Wireless USB Keyboard
Running Fedora 14.

I haven't tried PS2. My keyboard and mouse appear to be working again (25 mins and still responsive).I unplugged all USB devices except for the keyboard, mouse, and wifi dongle. This appears to have solved the problem. Other devices that were plugged in were a USB to SATA external HDD caddy (powered off), and a serial USB connection to a Sheeva Plug computer (mini server). how I can use all my USB ports in future without this issue arising?

Debian :: Desktop Freezes Randomly And Does Not Respond To Keyboard Or Mouse

Feb 21, 2015

I am using Debian with a gnome desktop.

Code: Select alluname -a

Code: Select allLinux app-server 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.65-1+deb7u1 x86_64 GNU/Linux

My desktop sometimes freezes and does not respond to keyboard or mouse. I initially thought the CPU was overheating but it froze tonight when my CPU temperature was 32C and it has been up to 50C without freezing. I am beginning to think it is a software issue rather than a hardware issue but do not know. I looked at the pm-powersave.log and user.log but did not see anything suspicious.

Fedora Installation :: Keyboard And Mouse Not Working On F11

Jun 11, 2009

I'm having an issue installing Fedora 11. The install goes fine, but after restarting (when I get to the initial configuration screen) my keyboard and mouse don't work. I can boot into the Live CD without issue. My boot.log file is below:

boot.log:
Code:
Welcome to Fedora

Setting hostname Ste-PC: [OK]

HAL is failing to start, could that be the issue? If so, how should I go about fixing it?

When I look into the problem, it seems that its with Quicksynergy on my desktop.I find that I have to quit Quicksynergy and open the system resources application to kill the Synergy daemon (or whatever it is) that Quicksynergy uses.Restarting Quicksynergy after killing the daemon fixes the problem as my laptop always reconnects perfectly fine.Does anyone else have this problem in Ubuntu? I'd like to get this fixed so I don't have to keep killing the synergy process and restarting Synergy.

Ubuntu Installation :: Controller Receiver Stop Working Randomly

Nov 11, 2010

I installed Ubuntu as well but was still using the windows loader. I eventually installed Ubuntu Studio when I got another HDD (which is where I installed it). Don't ask me how I did it. As of now no loader automatically pops up. It acts as if there is nothing to boot from. However I can hit f12 and chose which HDD to boot to. On one it comes up with the Windows loader w/ Vista and Ubuntu. I can chose Vista and it works just fine. However if I chose Ubuntu it starts going a lil nuts and restarts. If I chose the other HDD it boots up Grub w/ options of Ubuntu and Ubuntu Studio. Studio works (which I'm currently on) and pretty much the same thing happens as before when I chose Ubuntu. So if the 2 OS's that I need work (Only really use windows for games) then what is the problem? I know its a little bit annoying trying to remember to hit f12 and having to chose your OS again after that (and of course the extremely annoying vista startup times). Some other things in both Studio and Vista don't want to work like they should. This is about the only thing left that I could think of that may have something to do with it. My wireless card+an old wireless card I found won't work w/ either.

Yet they both work on other computers running Vista and/or Ubuntu (not studio). I seem to always keep having display problems on both as well (dual monitors and graphics both). Even on studio I have to restart it sometimes to even get it to let me go fix it. My wireless controller receiver (for games) will stop working randomly and need to be unplugged and plugged back in. I also have problems with Studio recognizing SD cards and DVD/CD's. I am not sure much of anything can be done aside from wipe and fresh install on both. Bad thing is I don't have my other computer with me and can't afford to buy a 1TB HDD right now.

Ubuntu :: KDE Apps Stop Responding To Mouse/keyboard But Plasma Still Works?

Jul 30, 2011

Hey folks. I'm not sure how to describe this properly but periodically Kubuntu 11.04 will stop responding to my mouse and keyboard EXCEPT that Plasma, or what I assume is Plasma, still responds to mouse events. I can launch and exit the desktop cube and desktop grid but can't access my panels or any application controls. The only fix I've found is to do a hard power cycle.

Does this behavior ring any bells for anyone? This is the last hurdle I've got between me and using Kubuntu 11.04 full time on my Samsung RV515.

Ubuntu :: Keyboard Randomly Stops Working Under 10.04?

Mar 3, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 since several months and I randomly have problems with the keyboard (PS2). Maybe 2-4 times per week the keyboard stops working all in a sudden. The symptoms related to this can be- the keyboard simply does not react any more to key press- during typing the keyboard gets crazy and fills the lines with the last typed character- opened windows move to the left when touching them at the top bar, keyboard does not react any more. When clicking on a panel menu the focus line is running permanently quickly through all items, and it's practically impossible to click on any of those (so even shutdown is difficult to achieve, and I might need to use a hard reset).

In nearly all cases the problem only disappears after reboot, just very rarely a logout is sufficient to get the keyboard working again. I googled for similar problems and found quite some people having problems with keyboard (and/or mouse) not working correctly under Ubuntu, but I have not stumbled over a similar error description as I have.Just some config parameters on my box: amd64, XOrg uses an Nvidia driver, 3D and Compiz are activated

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Mouse Randomly Stops Working Inside Applications?

Jul 10, 2011

This happens randomly after a reboot: I can move the mouse cursor and it works perfectly only on the Unity sidebar or whatever it's called. I can fire up applications, but once they're up they completely ignore any clicks or mouse movements (the main menu does not appear on the top bar if I move the cursor in the location that usually makes it appear). They only recognise a click on the close/iconize/maximize buttons.

The mouse works: as I said I can move the cursor and it recognises clicks on the sidebar and the window control buttons; plus, it's connected via a KVM switch both to the Linux box and to a Windows box (from which I'm writing this) and in Windows perfectly. The pattern used to be this: usually while running Firefox, the mouse and keyboard stop responding, and sometimes the whole desktop graphics become corrupted. I can Alt+F1 and go to a text-mode console, but nothing short of a reboot "fixes" things. After the reboot, about two times out of five everything works, three times out of five I get the situation described above.

For the last few hours or so, however, no amount of rebooting and sacrificing goats to the gods protecting sociopaths and Linux software developers have been able to restore mouse functionality. I click on my username on the login windowhere it works perfectly), enter the password and then only the Unity sidebar works: again, the mouse cursor moves, only clicks (right and left) are ignored, as are hotspots. In ubuntu classic there is no place where I can click and launch applications, btw - once I get in I'm basically blocked and can't do anything

Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic Koala - Slow Jerky And Has Odd Freezes Like Windows - Applications Randomly Stop Working

Nov 7, 2010

I had been happily on Jaunty Jackalope until they stopped supporting it so I took the forced upgrade and it's HORRIBLE!

I feel like I'm back in Windows land. Within an hour of my first load I had my very first Ubuntu total-lockup. Just like Windows. In the 18 months I'd been using Jackalope I had not had a single crash. Not one.

It's slow, jerky, and has odd freezes. Just like Windows. Applications randomly stop working and die. Just like Windows.

Is there any way to fall back to Jackalope or is there any hope of them fixing Koala? 'Cause this is wretched.

I see there's another version out there...10.04.01.LTS. I'll try that. It can't be much worse.

Ubuntu :: Mouse Buttons Stop Working?

Feb 6, 2010

I am running 9.10 (Karmic) on a Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop with Nvidia graphics. I have installed the -185 driver which has solved most problems. However every so often the system seems to lose track of the mouse button state. The first symptom of this is that all mouse movements on text are treated as if the left button is being held down: mouse movement selects text rather than just moving the graphics cursor. I am using a M$ optical mouse.

I have tried:unplugging and replugging the mouse using Ctl-Alt-F1 to go into a console and Ctl-Alt-F7 to go back to the GUI I am able to shut down all of the open windows normally using the keyboard, but the only way I have so far found to get the GUI working again is to reboot the system.

Debian Hardware :: USB Keyboard Stop Working Sometimes

But sometimes, my keyboard (a logitech illuminated) doesn't work anymore. I need to disconnect and reconnect it. Backlight keep on but no key work. I can't change the numlock or caps lock too.

Apparently, this appear mainly (only?) when i use the keyboard (for shortcut or typing text in vim).

Slackware :: XFCE Keyboard Shortcuts Stop Working

May 22, 2010

I'm running XFCE on slackware64-current. I've had this problem for a number of months now. Every so often, XFCE will decide to not recognize key combinations that are mapped to keyboard shortcuts. For example, hitting ALT+F2 will not bring up the xfrun4 dialog box. This happens to all of my keyboard shortcuts (e.g., volume keys).

For now, I've resorted to going into the keyboard shortcut settings and double-clicking on each assignment and then hitting ok. This seems to correct whatever corruption is occurring. What's even more unusual is that all of the settings appear to be intact in the settings box and even in the .xml file.
