my fedora 10 booting stops at starting udev for 5-6 minutes.when i pressed 'i' for interactive , i see ata3(i think its my DVD-R/W) responding too slow. so, booting stops there till it responds.o/p of

I have done a fresh text-only installation of Fedora 10 on a Dell Dimension E521 for the purpose of setting up a server. After installation I ran yum update to bring the system up to date. After the update, I rebooted the computer, but the boot process froze. I recycled power and pressed "I" after the Dell BIOS screen and the GRUB bootloader appeared. I selected the most current version, edited the kernel line by deleting "rhgb quiet" and replacing it with "3." After making this change, I continued with the boot and the computer stopped at "Starting udev:" I have two fedora 10 revisions showing in the GRUB bootloader, the original installation and the update after running yum.
I repeatedly tried rebooting both versions and, after about 30 attempts, the computer finished booting and got me to the command prompt. Reading through the forums indicated there might be some issue with my nVidia GeForce 6150 onboard video and fedora 10. So, when I got to the command prompt, I followed the instructions in the forums [URL] to load the rpmfusion drivers. This appeared to be successful and when I looked at /etc/X11/xorg.conf it appeared to be correct for the new nVidia drivers. After loading these new drivers I tried rebooting. Unfortunately, I have been trying now over and over to get back to the command prompt, but simply can't get past "Starting udev."
Fedora 12 randomly crashes after a fresh install.Everything is left at its default during the installation except I install KDE and not Gnome.When I try to boot I hit esc at the splash screen to see where it hangs, but it never hangs at the same spot twice. Sometimes it hangs and sometimes it restarts. Its crashed everywhere from starting udev to the login screen.
I've been using kubuntu for the past year because I have the same problem with F10 and F11.
I dual boot with Windows 7 for games.

I am having this problem with F 10. First I get the infamous message: Could not detect stabilization, waiting 10 seconds. at the beginning of the booting process. then after I initiate startx, I use gnome, all works fine and only for few minutes and the system freezes. At first the mouse freezes, then after 30 seconds or so, the mouse's cursor can move but clicks are ineffective, not even Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, or Ctrl+Alt+Del. I have to do hard reset.

I want to try the new 11.1. When I start the installation (x86_64 DVD), the startup is hanging. The last message is "Starting udev...". Keyboard is completely frozen, only reset button is working. Mobo is an Intel DG965WH with 4GB RAM and ATI Graphic card (ASUS1950pro). My opensuse 11.0 runs without any problems.

I've compiled and installed gpsd from sources and made sure it starts manually.2. I've copied the /lib/udev/gpsd.hotplug and /lib/udev/gpsd.hotplug.wrapper scripts in their places from the source tree and made them executable.3. I've copied the gpsd.rules file from sources into /etc/udev/rules.d4. I renamed it 99-persistent-gpsd.rules to run late in the bootup process.5. I've copied the /etc/default/gpsd file from sources and made sure it has the right settings inside.
Now, for the results. If I plug the gps usb dongle in while the system runs, it starts gpsd if it is not started, and it connects to it just as it should. But if I start the system with the dongle in, gpsd doesn't get started during boot. I can't find any relevant message in /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages for boot time. There is stuff there from when I plug the dongle in while the system is running though. It's like udev ignores the rules for it at boot time.Is there something in the Slackware boot scripts that would prevent running those scriptssd.hotplug.wrapper which in turn runs /lib/udev/gpsd.hotplug which is a Python script)?Here is the contents of 99-persistent-gpsd.rules (ignore the comments referring to Debian, it was meant for a Debian box). Have just installed 5.4 64 bit on an AMD64 x2 system with 4 GB ram running ESXi4.Text based install went fine, but on reboot starting up it gets as far as 'Starting udev' and just hangs. Checking the performance in ESXi it appears to be using 100% cpu.I have left it for half an hour and it does not progress and the only thing to do is to power cycle the VM.I have searched and found a few suggestions for kernel parameters but they did not make any difference. I can't even get in to a command line as it doesn't boot up far enough.I have reinstalled it several times and also checked the MD5 of the downloaded file and all appears Ok.

Less than 2 days ago i upgraded from slackware 13.0 to 13.1.Since then, I have not been able to use my laptop for more than 15-20 minutes, 'coz the KDE screen freezes all of a sudden without any crash report and in some time the screen goes blank with just a mouse pointer to be seen (Black Screen of Death?)I can do a CTRL-ALT-F* to switch to a console a continue, or reboot (using console) to get the X server started again. (CTRL-ALT-Backspace does not work either).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a very strange problem with Fedora 13 on my home PC. When booting it just hangs at random points in the boot process. When it happend the first time, I thought the PC probably is completed frozen, but then I discovered that hitting the return button got the boot process going on again, but just step by step. That means on every boot I have to keep hitting the return button until gnome starts up, that's very annoying. So for any reason the boot process seems to switch to interactive mode somehow...
I already removed the kernel boot options rhgb and quiet to see, where exactly this happens in the boot process. But as I said, it seems to be completely random. Sometimes it's when "Starting udev", sometimes, when setting up eth card, when starting atd, and so on. It's different every time.
By the way, a similar thing happens when shutting down. It can take up to half an hour until the PC really shuts down. But it's usually going faster if I just keep hitting return after issueing the shutdown command (which actually looks a bit dull). But the PC finally shuts down at some point. That's not the case when booting up. I thought, maybe there's some kind of timeout problem. But even waiting for two hours, the PC does not startup without keeping hammering the return button
my laptop(dell xps m1330) takes around 2'30" to boot, I don't remember when it started but it wasn't always that slow. even looking at bootcharts I cant seem to figure out what that could be

where the install hangs at the "Starting udev..." and nothing seems to be able to get the system to run the install. I have tried starting the install with edd=off, apci=off, noapic, apci=ht, and a variety of other options listed on posts. I have tried versions 11.0, 11.1, 11.2, and 10.2 with no success with any of these. With 10.2 it does not hard lock the system so I am able to Alt-F4 to see some debugging info and I am getting the following "it[1] trap divide error rip:2b6b0c281123 rsp:7fff9e95fdf0 error 0". With any of the version 11 installs the system completely hard locks with "Starting udev..." I have verified the installation media of all distros, re-downloaded the iso files, and burned using the slowest setting all with the same results. I have gone into the bios of my machine and disabled the APCIMCFG, High Precision Event Timer, SW Mem Hole Remap, and UnGanged Enabled. I have also tried to enable this IOMMU option for the memory but still nothing. I have tried using just one of the SATA drives by unplugging the other 5 and same results. I did notice that from time to time I see something from squashfs.ko saying "Clocksource tsc unstable"
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been having this glitch since Maverick. I hoped installing Narwhal would solve it (clearly not), I like Ubuntu, but this makes the OS frustrating and pretty much unusable, forcing me to stick with Windows.
The glitch appears randomly but mostly within 5-10 minutes after booting.
Another thing : when you want to screenshot the glitch, it usually gives you a perfect image, with everything OK. I have no idea why it worked now. I have a Packard Bell Dot M Netbook.
I ran a yum update this morning on my Fedora 10 box (i386), which updated the 'nfs-utils' package from 1.1.4-4.fc10 to 1.1.4-6.fc10. Before the update I was able to connect to the fedora NFS exports just fine from my Macbook Pro running latest version of Leopard on a simple home network. After the update, when I try to connect to the NFS export it waits for a while at leopard's "Connecting to Server" dialog box, and after about a minute I get a message saying "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct" (though my UID's are the same on both systems). My /etc/exports and /etc/sysconfig/nfs files were unchanged by the update. I tried restarting the nfs services as well as shutting down iptables and setting SELinux to permissive, etc. with no success.
I get the following in /var/log/messages (192.168.1.102 is the address of my macbook):
I was able to download the RPM for the older version of nfs-utils and then do a 'yum localinstall' to revert to the older version. This fixed my issues completely and my setup works as it did before. However I am curious to know why the latest version of nfs-utils breaks my setup, and whether it is a problem with my setup or if I should just wait for the next version to come out and see if the same thing happens.
Here is my /etc/exports file. If I understand this correctly it should allow connections from anyone with an IP address on my local network.

I need some advice on how to troubleshoot a booting problem. On my F12 installation, kernel 2.6.31.12-174 (and prior) all work fine. Kernels 2.6.32.x all stop booting at "starting udevd" -- even the cursor on the console stops blinking. My system is P4 2.4 GHz with 2 GB RAM on Asus P4PE -- old, but pretty generic.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a server running 64bit lucid and while trying to get a script to run on boot to start Davmail I appear to have broken something. I have webmin installed but I have been trying to do the majority of things via the command line. I now have davmail starting at boot but a lot of other services don't start anymore, including apache, mysql and webmin. Fortunately SSH still works and I can start apache and webmin from the command line without any problems.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI joined a company as an IT staff 2 months plus back. I now encounters a problem that the booting up hangs at the time when it is starting domino services. I have no clue where to look at and duno where to start checking. A little description of the server. : It's a lotus notes domino server for employees webmail service. -> Now it is down. it's an external dns server: recently high volumes of query cache denied surfaces. it's also our proxy server. The only way to get it up and running is to turn off domino service. The system is running still with high volumes of queries I last checked.
Althrough it can boot up now and DNS & proxy are running, I couldn't access the system anymore. It will hang when I attempt to log in from the command prompt. Below is an illustration:

Remote access is not possible as it has sshd disabled by default. Our employees cannot access their webmail now, which is a major issue.
I'm booting ubuntu from my android phone via USB and it works great, the thing is anything i install or do while using ubuntu isnt saved the next time i boot from the usb unless its saved in my phones storage. I want to be able to keep booting ubuntu the same way but keep the programs i install there for the next time instead ohttp://mac.bigresource.com/add/add.phpf starting from scratch everytime.

According to my coworkers this thing boot some version of debian about two years ago. currently I have used there old image and a new one I made of the latest Debian stable build. both images fail to get passed grub.
to be clear the BIOS simply replies "loading grub" takes ten minutes and then crashes.
has anyone ever had trouble with grub crashing systems? this problem seems odd since is did boot with this two years ago and i still have that image.
I'm using mencoder to capture audio from a Encore ENLTV-FM3 video capture device. I have recently noticed that, since one week ago, when the machine was forcibly restarted due to a power outage, all recordings are slightly pitched, they play back slower than they should.
I narrowed down the problem to the following command line:

Somehow, mencode managed to gather precisely 10 minutes worth of raw audio in 9m 55s. That's not physically possible, unless the capture device's A/D converters are "overclocked". I can't think of any other explanation besides hardware failure. Can that be? Could it be that something got burnt during the power outage and now the capture device's internal clock went nuts?
Since the machine's restart, I've also noticed dmesg is flooded with entries like this:
CE: hpet increased min_delta_ns to XXX nsec
Which seem to indicate that the computer's high precision event timer is somehow out of sync. Does this have to do with the audio issue? Can it be that the audio converter's sample rate is linked to the HPET? I'm totally lost here. Has anyone bumped into something similar?
I'm on Fedora 14, and OpenOffice 3.3.0 takes a long time to open (about 30 seconds, sometimes less). It isn't a CPU or disk performance issue, it's just simply a very long delay before the program opens. It appears to be a frivolous network connection timing out. According to Wireshark, it tries to look up:
dulcimer.(none)
which fails, after which it tries to look up:
dulcimer.(none).mylitestream.com
(dulcimer is my hostname, and LiteStream is my ISP)
Is there a way to work around this bug in OpenOffice?
Last week I installed minimal Ubuntu Karmic with XBMC live on my HTPC. I'm connecting to my fileserver thru a wireless interface and although that works like a charm most of the time, every once in a while the interface doesn't come up during boot and the PC 'hangs'.
I then press ctrl+alt+del and the pc reboots and the Grub2 boot menu appears, I suppose because the previous boot didn't go well. However, the boot menu doesn't have a timeout, I have to press <enter> to continue booting. My wireless USB-keyboard isn't working at that stage yet, so I'm unable to continue.

We have implemented a Ubuntu with Squid (2.7) & Dansguardian, Webmin and the webmin modules for these services. Server was running fine for about 6 months then suddenly there are hundreds of TIME_WAIT's when using:

Clients are Mac's bound to OD & AD (magic triangle). We reverted the vm image to a snapshot back when was working fine but problem remains. We created a server from scratch and same issue. We use ldap_auth to the active directory for authentication:

I decided to install Ubuntu on my desktop after the setup went well on my laptop and I liked the OS. I already had Windows 7 and Backtrack 9 installed on my HDD, so when I was in setup I took the 200gb partition for BT9 and formatted SDA5 to ext3 with "/" as the root. Then checked "format" and selected SDA5 from dropdown list and continued to install.Everything went smooth in the installation and I was prompted to reboot which I did assuming I would soon see a GRUB screen. Instead I got an error saying
"Grub loading stage1.5.
Grub loading, please wait...
error 15"
and then the computer just freezes. I've tried to boot from CD but I just get "CD-ROM Boot Priority ...Boot Ready" and then after about 30 seconds it tries to boot from the HDD and I get the same error.I've read that I need to configure GRUB somehow but I have no idea how to do that and I can't boot anything from a CD because it just waits and then jumps to the HDD. I guess what i'm asking is if there is a way to configure GRUB from the BIOS menu or make it possible to be able to boot from a CD.
