Just installed ubuntu 10.04 and would like some suggestions on a good video and audio player and maybe an idiots guide to installing all the codecs i need. I would like to find an audio player with some good visualizations.

Coming from windows one of things I miss the most is a decent video player and an audio player. For audio I use foobar2000 and I continue to do so on ubuntu with wine since I didn't find anything comparable. Video is worse because I can't use the same with wine. On windows I have used The KMPlayer since ages. But on ubuntu I only a few cumbersome players. The built in is very basic. VLC's subtitle/playlist management is very lame in comparison with kmp. Also seeking sucks with wmv's most of the time it jumps backwards when I want to jump forward. Mplayer doesn't even have gui and the frontends aren't too good either.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I was in Win XP I was happy with iTunes; now in OSuse 11.2 it has been difficult to find a functional replacement for it. Banshee donwloads my video and audio podcasts but can't replay them within the program. I have to go manually (Dolphin) to the corresponding folders and replay them using mPlayer, which is not very handy / fiendly. I tried to install Miro, and so far has not worked (see post here)

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to diagnose a weird problem ... maybe someone has an idea where to start. I'm having a problem with flash videos. The video part displays as if the fast-forward button is being held down; audio sounds correct.
I'm thinking "synchronization error" (duh!) but I'm not sure how to start to diagnose the issue. I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4 x64, and the problem shows up in both chrome and opera.
I have FC10! so far i have downloaded the mplayer and its codecs.further i extracted both the packages( in DOWNLOAD folder).but I'm not able to extract the codecs in the /usr/local/lib/codecs directory.it says you do not have permission. how should i know whether to compile the mplayer or is it pre-compiled?

It's more easy to install and maintain some services then make suse play video. I'm going crazy when every player says to me that it doesn't contain any codecs. I heard i'ts all about licensing.. So, why doesn't Ubuntu havn't any problem to play my mp4 and other video formats just from the box?My case is regular.. No way to play mp4 in totem,banshee,xine no h264 decoder.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI can't play video on any player (vlc, mplayer, totem), the files open, sound works, but video is black. I suspect something went wrong when I upgraded to VLC 1.1.4 using a ppa, I've read that the ffmpeg can screw up and then video just stops. Trying to play m4v, mkv, avi, none work.
Not sure what to do, reinstalling seems like a hassle. Already tried removing vlc and the new ppa, tried removing ffmpeg and reinstalling, removing ubuntu-restricted-extras.

The way to fix it would be to separate the audio and video streams, speed up the video (the audio is FINE, it's the video that's wrong), and then recombining them. View 7 Replies View RelatedIs there an application that anyone knows about that I can use to convert either an .flv or .ogg file that contains both audio and video to just an audio .ogg file (preferably vorbis+theora) without audacity? I'm fairly certain audacity could accomplish this but it seems like overkill for what I'm trying to do and the computer I'm trying to use does not run it so well.
::EDIT:: I should also mention that I've tried looking on google. I did find downloadhelper extension for firefox which uses ffmpeg to convert the files but I don't see any obvious way to strip the video.
Ubuntu insists on using movie player as the default for audio files. I would like to use VLC. VLC doesn't show up on the list as preferred applications for multimedia. I tried using custom with vlc %u but it doesn't work.

View 4 Replies View Relatedaudio player of the likes of RyhthmBox, but uses way less CPU? I have an older PC which runs a 667MHz CPU, and 256Mb ram. It's got Ubuntu 10.04, but RhythmBox struggles to play. Using the Top command, RhythmBox consumes 50% CPU, PulseAudio consumes 27%, X11 uses 17%, and the rest is made up of other processes. Total usage when RhythmBox plays is 98-100% CPU.
So, you can see that I really need an audio player that would use half that of RhythmBox for this PC to be effective. The PC will only ever be used as an audio playout system. I've tried Exaile, which consumes 60% CPU, and the sound simple refuses to come through. VLC doesn't even seem to want to know about it. It launches, and that's about it.
I need my Ubuntu box to play an http audio stream on boot. It must heedlessly attempt to reconnect to the audio stream no matter how many network errors I may or may not have.
Currently using VLC on boot with the commands: -loop -http-reconnect
VLC works fine for the first little while, but after a day or two, it doesn't try to reconnect enough to meet my needs.
I'm looking at dumping Rhythmbox for a new player on my netbook. I've tried Banshee which seemed good, apart from being quite sluggish (mono?).
Rhythmbox is now dead development wise I think aswell.
Exaile looks interesting, and I've heard good things about Clementine (although may be sluggish as its qt4)
This is a fresh install of Listen from synaptic on 9.10. I can launch it with no obvious problems:

last night Listen would crash with a seg fault whenever I tried to play something, but now instead i'm getting this.
I've tried everything first I tried with Preferences/Preferred Applications - no result. then File Type Manager from Ubuntu Tweek - nothing... I tried with a few older Exaile versions (from various repo's) - nothing... compiling 0.3.1.1 from source - still nothing. with these I can set every other player to be default player (so, only Exaile refuses to obey). to be more exact, after setting Exaile as default, double-click on any audio file associated with it results with temporary CPU usage increase and than NOTHING :S just don't tell me to use VLC, Audacious, Rhythmbox, Amarok, QL or any other player... I used them all but I NEED Exaile (and not just because it looks beautiful enough with Ambiance to make me completely forget foobar2k... and because it's sooo stubborn ).
