Fedora :: 15 Console Extended Hangs?
Jun 22, 2011
I still haven't put my finger on the details, but I wanted to see if this rings any bells. When I leave my Fedora 15 system for several hours and then come back, it is sometimes unresponsive for several minutes before it finally thaws out. This is beyond get-a-cup-of-coffee slow - drop-off-the-dry-cleaning-and-pick-up-some-milk slow would probably be a more accurate characterization. It's basically a stock F15 install with vmware player installed and running two virtual machines. One of the virtual machines is also stock F15, and I've been waiting on it for over an hour since thawing out the host system this morning. The clock at the top says "Tue 03:53" (the current time is Wed 11:00).

I have an updated Ubuntu server and had problems with the windowmanger. Now treated the system and now it will not start anymore.
Symptom:
Starts up to "Checking battery state... // Running local boot scripts (etc/rc.local)
than it hangs.

[Code]....
If I start X with startx a gray screen with a mouse X comes up, but there is nothing. No keystrokes or mouse buttons effects anything.

I have 3 processes to be executed in a particular sequence.
ProcessA
ProcessB
ProcessC
The requirement is that all the processes should run as background processes.
ProcessA talks to ProcessB and ProcessC using sockets.
ProcessB talsk to ProcessA only using sockets.
ProcessC talsk to ProcessA only using sockets.

In previous versions of Fedora I was able to do Ctrl + Shift + U, enter the Unicode number - i.e., 20ac, press Enter and get a euro character. In Fedora 12 I do not have that feature. My language is US English.

I have a situation where a disk was built using an image from a disk with a much smaller geometry. The result is about 70% of the disk is unused. Most of the partitions (including root) are on an extended partition that is sized for this smaller geometry. The person who did this has already been scolded, but life goes on.fdisk shows this:
Disk /dev/sda: 146.6 GB, 146694733824 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 17834 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
[code]....

I would like to ask you for an opinion. These are my current partitions:
/dev/sda1 ext3 200MB /boot
/dev/sda2 ext4 39.06GB /
/dev/sda3 swap 3.91GB
unallocated 2.25MB
/dev/sda4 extended /home
--------> unallocated 24.41GB
--------> /dev/sda5 ext4 165,30GB
I need to create a NTFS partition. However Windows installer doesn't see 'unallocated' under /dev/sda4. I do not want to touch /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, /dev/sda5. I also need swap. Is there any chance I can move 'unallocated' under /dev/sda4 from extended and recreate it as a primary partition?

I wanted to shrink my Windows NTFS partition to allow me to grow my extended partition which contains my Linux partitions, namely to grow my swap space and home directory some however it just fails at enlarging the extended partition. Is this a known problem because I know there were rewrites to the storeage backend of Anaconda.

I have XFX ATI-HD5670 and use proprietary catalyst 11.2-1 in 64-bit Fedora 14.
I am not sure when this started, or if it ever did work before, but when I started noticing that the screensaver will not turn off the monitor, I set the gnome power manager to make the monitor sleep after an hour.
Now, the display will not turn back on after it has been in sleep mode. I know the system is still running fine as I can ssh from another PC and see that everything seems to be normal, no error message in dmesg, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, etc.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log shows that monitor DPMS is not detected but still enables DPMS:
Is this a problem with catalyst driver? I know it's not the PC or the monitor, because I have a 2nd PC with the same video driver with the same problem, but others without this driver don't (ati open source, nvidia, etc. all work fine.)
I'm wondering if the problem always existed before, but I just didn't notice it because the display sleep mode was never set? If that's the case, my hunch is that it looked like it worked because the monitor was smart enough to turn itself off when the screensaver kicked in and just showed a blank screen, and the video driver was never involved with sleep mode until I set it in gnome power manager, at which point it started showing this problem of not waking up? And because the screensaver was no longer set to blank the screen, but to show some animation, that's why the monitor will never sleep anymore?

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.

How can I set the console in both kde and gnome (mostly kde konsole) to the usual [username@localhost]<currentfolder> layout ?. It looks like this now:
Code:
bash-4.0$ cd /home/M/Documents
bash-4.0$
the real console after text based login has the normal layout "[root@Fedora ~]#" but consoles within x only show "bash-4.0$"
What have I messed up and how can I restore it ?

New clean install of Fedora 12 (my worst Linux experience so far, should have sticked with Fedora 9, it was old but it was stable, unlike this half-backed... whatever it is). Anyway, to the matter at hand (one of the many):How do I switch to the console from the graphical login screen? CTRL+ALT+Fn doesn't work, CTRL+ALT+Backspace doesn't kill X, it's a NIS machine with only root as local account

As everyone knows, the graphic user can be swithed with Ctrl+Alt+F7 (or F1 in Fedora). There are also a few text mode consoles - Ctrl+Alt+F2...F6.
Fortunately, there is a Switch User button when the screen is locked from Gnome with the default screensaver.
The question is how can a new graphical user be switched from console (Ctrl+Alt+F2...F6) if the screen is locked by some other screensaver which does not have this function?

I have RDP working fine on my machine, however when I am signed in locally to the machine, I get the "console" session, which is fine, but when I want to RDP from another machine, I am put into a separate session, instead of "taking over" the console session.Is there a way to do this, similar to how RDP works on a windows machine?I have tried running the mstsc /console command, but I still get stuck into a non-console session.

I have successfully customized linux (CentOS distro) using kickstart and custom splash screen. I havent added/installed any desktop (gnome/kde) package in my custom distro. So obviously after installation the linux will start in console mode.
My requirement is i have to add a custom gui which basically provides 1.product information 2. product agreement and 3. product cd key. My custom linux do not need a desktop, and just for my custom gui i do not wish to install all the desktop packages. Sitting with a blank slate if you know what i mean.
