General :: Background Process Execution Hangs Console And Ip Communication?

Feb 9, 2011

I have 3 processes to be executed in a particular sequence.

ProcessA
ProcessB
ProcessC

The requirement is that all the processes should run as background processes.

ProcessA talks to ProcessB and ProcessC using sockets.
ProcessB talsk to ProcessA only using sockets.
ProcessC talsk to ProcessA only using sockets.

Software :: Background Process Hangs?

Feb 10, 2011

I have a process A running in the background. When I start another process B also in the background, the system hangs the moment I hit any key. Process A and B communicate over a socket. Iam not even able to do a telnet to the system. Is there any precautions that I need to take while running in background

Programming :: Continue Execution Of A Python Program While A Background Task Is Going On?

Aug 28, 2010

I'm trying to figure out how to continue execution of a Python program while a background task is going on.

In bash, it is adding "&" to the end as in:

Code:
#! /bin/bash
find / -iname "*.py" > /tmp/all_pys &
echo "looking for all python scripts and putting them in /tmp/all_pys"
(yes, I know I could just put the echo BEFORE the find but I just use it for example)

Say I do that in python (not necessarily running the shell, but perhaps using scriptutil.ffind or something similar), but want to allow the user to be doing something else while running that search in the background, how would I thread, fork, subprocess (not to be confused with the module and Popen) [or whatever I should call it] that?

General :: Pull Process / Job Into Background

I know of terminating a command with & and then moving it into the background by pressing Ctrl-Z and then bg [pid], and I also know of nohup. But say you started a process that turned out to take much longer than one expected, is there a way of pulling, so to speak, this process from another terminal screen into the background so that even if I log off from the server the process would continue?

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot Opensuse Under Grub2 With Splash Background And Console Background?

Mar 24, 2010

I originally have Ubuntu Lucid on my machine. I just installed opensuse 11.2 on another partition without bootloader installed. So I'm still using the Ubuntu Lucid default bootloader grub2. I can boot up opensuse correctly. the nagging thing is that there's no splash screen show up during the boot process, instead, lines of command are flashing, the console background is also missing and the font under console (tty1-6) is huge. what can I do to have these back to opensuse? the current entry in grub2 for opensuse

Code:
menuentry "openSUSE 11.2 (i586) (on /dev/sda2)" {
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,2)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 9ac05ede-e7c4-47f3-b55b-66d5844$
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop root=/dev/sda2
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop
}
which parameters should I add?

Because of my English skills I'll try to explain this subject as best I can, thank you for understanding. Fisrt of all, I am running some program on my slackware in background (using standard method - &). I need to make a script, which allows sending command to this process on my machine from another one. Furthermore this program have to be logged out (standard output f.e. ./myprogram > log.out.txt).It might be a separate Program A which runs my Program B but it cannot be screen, because it is not working like I'd like to and it cannot be java, because it's slow and working not the best so to speak

General :: Running Program In Background In Child Emulator Process

Aug 26, 2009

I wonder how one can, if at all, run an X program in the background *in an emulator sub-shell process*. What I mean is to launch a program in an emulator, e.g, by xterm -e gedit

but with gedit (in this example) running in the background from inside the xterm sub-process, so that the xterm will accept other commands. In the above, gedit will run in the foreground, and of course, if you do
xterm -e gedit &

then xterm will run in the background, not gedit.In short, I would like to achieve the same thing as "gedit &" as you manually do in xterm, but from another shell. What I aim to do is write an X init script to achieve this result (to have the emulator open and a program or two running from it, in the background, at the X startup).

General :: Function Having Background Process Inside Command Substitution

Oct 5, 2010

The first call to "somefunction" works as expected. The function prints "endfunction" and a process in background sleeps 30 seconds. In the second call I thought it should work in the same way, but the script sleeps 30 seconds before it prints "endfunction".Does someone know the reason of this behavior? Is there another way to do a command substitution of a function that has a background process without have to waiting for that process?

General :: Computer Hangs After Installation In Reboot Process

Dec 9, 2010

I installed Ubuntu in my PC alongside winXP. I downloaded the ISO and mounted it using a virtual image software (PowerISO used in winXP). I installed Ubuntu using wubi in a 20GB partition. During installation it asked me how much space should I give, I gave it 11gb. Everything went fine. I rebooted but now the computer hangs during startup. I went to verbose mode to see what the error is and found out that everything is ok. The last line that apears is "Setting sensors limit [OK]" and then nothing happens. I have tried every option (safe graphic mode/ demo mode etc etc) but the computer hangs.

OpenSUSE Install :: No Bootsplash/console Background After Kernel Update

May 16, 2011

Recently I did a kernel update (compiling it manually with help of SuSE Automatic Kernel Compiler). Everything works fine and I am happy with my own settings, however there is one thing that I would to enable. On the stock kernel there is a openSUSE bootsplash on startup and a nice looking openSUSE background image in console mode. On my newly compiled kernel there is no such a eyecandies. My question is: How to enable them on my own compiled 2.6.38 kernel?

P.S In the attachment you can see what i mean with that background image in console mode, so you get my point. This is the image found on the internet, my system is openSUSE 11.4 (64 bit)

Fedora :: Firefox Hangs Too Often With Other Tasks In The Background?

Apr 14, 2010

Ever since I preupgraded to Fedora 12 Firefox has been behaving annoyingly under certain circumstances. I guess the issue is not specific to Firefox, but just that it is the most obvious example. What happens is that whenever there is another program/process in the background using CPU heavily (burning a DVD, for instance) or doing heavy disk I/O (say, Filelight scanning the root folder) Firefox hangs for a few seconds about twice every minute. If I open System Activity during such hangs the Firefox process will report "disk sleep", as if it was paused by some process management mechanism which is prioritizing the background task. Since I never observed such behaviour under similar circumstances under F11, F10 or F8 I wonder if there could be any OS setting which was changed and triggered this change of behavior. I should mention the computer has a dual-core processor.
