Fedora Security :: Disable Logging In As Root In Console?

Feb 22, 2010

I wanted to disable root logins in console, so I searched for that. I found that if I change root's bash to "/sbin/nologin" in "/etc/passwd", root user will not be able to login. So I did that. But when I wanted to use sudo command, it didn't show me root bash, but it only do the same thing as logging in as root in single user mode (shows message that this account is disabled). So, how I can disable root logins, but keep enabled sudo command for standard users?

Security :: Console Users Logging In Without Passwords?

Jul 19, 2010

Sitting at the console, I log in with any user name and NO PASSWORD IS REQUESTED. I get logged in automatically without entering the user's password.

I did:
passwd joeuser

To change his password and still he goes right in without being asked for a password!

Possibly related- 10 days ago, my smtp server was breached as a spam relay. The username they cracked was deleted. I added fail2ban for postfix. The logs show no further intrusion.

General :: Enable - Disable Logging In A Bash Script ?

Oct 19, 2010

My objective is pretty simple: To have a variable within a bash script where I can switch between logging to file or screen.

Simple example of what I am trying to do:

Code:

So, as you can see, I have a variable which clears the log path if the user variable vLOG is not 'Y'. This should mean the user can run the script from the command line and view all the output (instead of it going to a log file).

The problem is that with the final line of the script (which ultimately tests the intention), I don't get the required result as the vLOGPATH variable is just passed to echo as text.

I have tried using 'echo -e' and getting some backslashes in there, I have tried using eval but I am either using them incorrectly.

General :: Disable Console Messages At Boot Time?

Sep 5, 2011

I am using Arch Linux and want to disable console messages which are displayed when the kernel boots. I have tried the quiet and loglevel=2 options in /boot/grub/menu.1st as given below:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/c6dbfcdc-fcd8-498e-9182-f3bddc4f05ff ro loglevel=2

However I am still seeing console messages at boot. I used grub-install after the changes.

Any ideas where I am going wrong?

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Disable Console Screen Shutoff

Mar 6, 2010

I have my headless server, and just plugged a spare monitor into it, opened up screen, ran htop on it, so I can see the system status, but the screen keeps shutting off after so long. The only way to "wake it up", is to use a local keypress (which means I have to hook a keyboard back up to it). I have already tried 'setterm -powersave off -powerdown 0', but it didn't affect it any. Is there any way to disable this powersaving mode?

Server :: Disable Console Blanking In Text Mode?

Jan 6, 2010

I run a custom build of linux running kernel 2.6.24 and busybox. At the moment I'm investigating a kernel panic. The problem is that after 10 minutes the screen is blanked, i.e. it is still on but has been turned black. If you press a key then the command prompt is shown once again, but if the kernel has crashed then this won't work and any info about the panic is inaccessible. So I'd like to prevent the display being blanked. I've tried booting with 'apm=off' and 'apm=off acpi=on' kernel parameters but neither had any effect.

I'm trying to install F15 for a friend, (works great for me btw) and after getting to the desktop and sometimes during install set up, it just keeps logging off by itself and then back to the desktop. Also, is there a fedora iso that has all current updates built in? He really wants F15, but we are stuck right now. and is there an "alternate" cd for fedora without gui install?

Fedora Installation :: Logging In Won't Work

Jun 12, 2011

I just installed Fedora 15 over a previous F14 installation. (My /home and /usr/local directories were installed as separate partitions, and the system dual-boots with Windows on another partition.) Setting up the users seemed to work normally. However, when I logged in, instead of starting normally, it went back to the login screen.I rebooted and made it go into terminal mode on startup (appending 3 to the kernel arguments). I was able to log in from the terminal. When I tried using startx, it failed. I tried to use "yum update" but I had no internet connection, so it did not work.

The next step was to try and get a connection to my router using iwconfig and wpa_supplicant, but that also failed. I tried reinstalling Fedora from the LiveCD, but the problem persisted.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Logging Connection Attempts With Iptables

Mar 8, 2010

I'm having a lot of problems getting NIS set up with our firewall. I've looked online and no one seems to have any answers. When the firewall is off, NIS works. When it's on, it doesn't.I would like to know which ports NIS needs by logging connection attempts on the server, since I would swear the right ports seem open already. Right now I'm using this to generate the log entries:

iptables -I INPUT -m state --state NEW -j LOG --log-prefix "New Connection: "
iptables -I OUTPUT -m state --state NEW -j LOG --log-prefix "New Connection: "

However, I think it must only work for successful connections, because I'm not seeing any new entries when I try running the NIS client on another machine (ypbind).
