How can I set the console in both kde and gnome (mostly kde konsole) to the usual [username@localhost]<currentfolder> layout ?. It looks like this now:

the real console after text based login has the normal layout "[root@Fedora ~]#" but consoles within x only show "bash-4.0$"
What have I messed up and how can I restore it ?
how to disable the desktop effects of gnome in the console of F13? My desktop freezes every time directly after login, I assume the desktop effects could have something to do with it. (x86_64 + open nvidia driver)

I am a little fuzzy on the whole gtk, gdm, gnome thing. So how do I go from this console prompt to configuring the new installation with desktop?So let's say I am logged on as root on the console.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter the Upgrade of my Fedora Insatallation (FC 10 => 12) I have some problems with Gnome and the Login via console. The system actually boots fine and all kind of services like Postfix, IMAP, Samba, SSHD, Apache, etc. are avialable normally.
If I try however to work directly on the server I only see the completed Fedora progress icon and not as hoped for, the Login to Gnome. Also the attempt to change to a plain console with ALT-CTRL-F1 fails.
Since actually everything seems to work quite fine, I am somewhat helpless, according to should I look for, to get Gnome and the Console Login working again.
I have a very strange trouble with gnome/X11/Adapter/memory, I really don't know! When I upgrade my memory to 2Gb (1Gb+1Gb), graphic mode not starting! Load only console, but gnome not load. And besides error message not showing. 'starx' command leads to black screen and nothing happends, keyboard doesn't work too. if I leave 1Gb memory, all working perfectly! tell me where I can find log-message or how I can solve that problem. In /var/log I can't found anything interesting.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis only started after the recent updates which included a lot of sysv stuff in Squeeze. I'm not talking the Gnome or Xwindows consoles, I'm talking the full-on type you get when you do the CTL-ALT-F2 type of console. before those updates, I had no trouble. Now I can't get back into the gui by pressing CTL-ALT-F7 as usual. All i get is just a black screen. I do have the nvidia proprietary driver installed using DKMS, and I am running the latest (I think) liquorix kernel.

symptom: via right click on a gnome panel, perform "add to panel" and choose Dwell Click.
Gnome panel bites the dust with SIGSEGV at this point, restarts, and then you've got dwell click on the panel.
Anyone else seeing this, and better yet, have a solution?

and all other messages during shutdown and restart. Actually, earlier when i shutdown the system only a single shutdown message is showing on the screen, i don't know what happened, now it is showing lot of messages. i tried the quiet parameter in kernel boot parmeters but no effect.
My vino listens on port 5900, but when I connect I still get a new session and not my existing one.

Fortunately, there is a Switch User button when the screen is locked from Gnome with the default screensaver.
The question is how can a new graphical user be switched from console (Ctrl+Alt+F2...F6) if the screen is locked by some other screensaver which does not have this function?

When I leave my Fedora 15 system for several hours and then come back, it is sometimes unresponsive for several minutes before it finally thaws out. This is beyond get-a-cup-of-coffee slow - drop-off-the-dry-cleaning-and-pick-up-some-milk slow would probably be a more accurate characterization. It's basically a stock F15 install with vmware player installed and running two virtual machines. One of the virtual machines is also stock F15, and I've been waiting on it for over an hour since thawing out the host system this morning. The clock at the top says "Tue 03:53" (the current time is Wed 11:00).
