Fedora :: Partitioning Task - Moving Unallocated From Extended

Jan 19, 2010

I would like to ask you for an opinion. These are my current partitions:

/dev/sda1 ext3 200MB /boot
/dev/sda2 ext4 39.06GB /
/dev/sda3 swap 3.91GB
unallocated 2.25MB
/dev/sda4 extended /home
--------> unallocated 24.41GB
--------> /dev/sda5 ext4 165,30GB

I need to create a NTFS partition. However Windows installer doesn't see 'unallocated' under /dev/sda4. I do not want to touch /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, /dev/sda5. I also need swap. Is there any chance I can move 'unallocated' under /dev/sda4 from extended and recreate it as a primary partition?

Ubuntu :: Add Unallocated Space To Extended Partitions ?

Nov 20, 2010

I have the following disk partitions from the left side of partition table as of now:
NTFS - Primary windows vista
Extended - 3 Nos. all NTFS - middle one contains data
Unallocated space
NTFS - Primary
NTFS - Primary HP Recovery

My intention is to add unallocated space to the extended partition. Will I be able to use Gparted to do it?

Or can I install Ubuntu in one of the extended partitions and make this unallocated partition the home partition for Ubuntu. I am not able to add new partition in this unallocated space as disk manager in vista throws up an error no free disk space to complete the operation. I read in some forum that OEM installations allow only 3 primary partitions and one extended or 4 primary ones. Is it true for OEM's only or its a universal rule?

Installation :: Dual Booting And Partitioning - Leave 20 GB Unallocated?

Jun 28, 2010

I referred to this video, to install ubuntu(NOT on windows partition) and also run windows XP, and im well enjoying ubuntu. i have some hard-disk issues, and i'm going to format the whole hard-disk. I will format and repartition using windows xp installer. I'm leaving 20 GB for ubuntu. So I can install ubuntu in 2 ways...

1) While re-partitioning, i can leave 20 GB unallocated and later put ubuntu there

OR

2) Install windows XP the normal way, and then allocate 20GB for ubuntu using GPART - by shrinking a windows partition. (as shown in video)

General :: Partitioning - Primary And Extended ?

Oct 14, 2010

I am installing opensuse on my laptop. Dual boot with Windows 7. Two partitions are already taken by windows. I am confused about extended partitions. I know I will need one because I can only have 4 primary partitions.

Here are the partitions I want:

Is there a certain order to create these? Does it matter which ones are primary partitions and which one are part of extended partitions?

Ubuntu Installation :: Partitioning For Dual Boot-- Windows Is On An Extended Partition - Other Weirdness??

Jan 9, 2011

I successfully partitioned my desktop with Gparted and made it into an XP/Ubuntu dual boot.

Now i'm trying to do the same with my netbook (eee pc 1000he), and the existing partitions look funny:

How should I change this to prepare for installing Ubuntu? Can I just install to the unallocated space on the extended partition? I don't need optimal efficiency here, I just need to know where to install Ubuntu for a workable dual boot.

It's confusing to me that Windows is on an extended partition, and also that /dev/sda2 has the boot flag (this drive contains nothing but two undeletable folders titled "amd 64" and "i386"). This set-up is the result of a Windows re-install at a sketchy computer shop.

Ubuntu Installation :: GParted - Moving Partition Out Of Extended One

I've installed Windows 7 + XP + Ubuntu 10.10 and Mac Os X on my PC. The problem is that XP wont boot. I've tried a lot of fixes for the last 2 days but still nothing. So I've come to conclusion that it might be probably due to its partition (dev/sda being inside of another Extended partition (dev/sda3) as you guys can see on the attachment. If so, how can I move it out of the extended partition.

The problem that I am facing is, that I am unable to install fedora on this unallocated space..even though I am checking the option for "Creating custom Layout". Or anything else which automatically displays the most important tasks. Currently I have to open the task list and look at them (which I usually forget). Fedora :: 15 Console Extended Hangs?

Jun 22, 2011

I still haven't put my finger on the details, but I wanted to see if this rings any bells. When I leave my Fedora 15 system for several hours and then come back, it is sometimes unresponsive for several minutes before it finally thaws out. This is beyond get-a-cup-of-coffee slow - drop-off-the-dry-cleaning-and-pick-up-some-milk slow would probably be a more accurate characterization. It's basically a stock F15 install with vmware player installed and running two virtual machines. One of the virtual machines is also stock F15, and I've been waiting on it for over an hour since thawing out the host system this morning. The clock at the top says "Tue 03:53" (the current time is Wed 11:00).

Fedora :: Display Doesn't Turn Back On After Extended Idle

Apr 16, 2011

I have XFX ATI-HD5670 and use proprietary catalyst 11.2-1 in 64-bit Fedora 14.

I am not sure when this started, or if it ever did work before, but when I started noticing that the screensaver will not turn off the monitor, I set the gnome power manager to make the monitor sleep after an hour.

Now, the display will not turn back on after it has been in sleep mode. I know the system is still running fine as I can ssh from another PC and see that everything seems to be normal, no error message in dmesg, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, etc.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log shows that monitor DPMS is not detected but still enables DPMS:

Is this a problem with catalyst driver? I know it's not the PC or the monitor, because I have a 2nd PC with the same video driver with the same problem, but others without this driver don't (ati open source, nvidia, etc. all work fine.)

I'm wondering if the problem always existed before, but I just didn't notice it because the display sleep mode was never set? If that's the case, my hunch is that it looked like it worked because the monitor was smart enough to turn itself off when the screensaver kicked in and just showed a blank screen, and the video driver was never involved with sleep mode until I set it in gnome power manager, at which point it started showing this problem of not waking up? And because the screensaver was no longer set to blank the screen, but to show some animation, that's why the monitor will never sleep anymore?

Fedora :: Pulseaudio Not Staying On Task?

Dec 5, 2009

I'm getting increasingly aggravated with tis so I figured I would ask and see if there are any insights on this.

I'm currently running F12 on a Dell XPS m1330 laptop. Everything is going great with the exception of pulseaudio. Rather than using the internal mic and speakers I'm using external (usb) Bose companion speakers and and external mic that is integrated into my Microsoft Lifecam Cinema webcam.

Now, when these work, they're spot on. No issues at all. HOWEVER, pulseaudio frequently disregards them and tries to use something else (the internals) or just stops using them. Nothing crashes, nothings broken, they just get "deselected". This happens when I back out of a game or program, log out and login, etc. I then have to jump through a series of hoops to get it configured back for the "correct" setup.

Fedora :: F15 - 64g SSD - Partitioning / Space Usage?

Jun 12, 2011

Just picked up a 64g M4 SSD, bit small I know but wanted to have a play and try the SSD thing out. I am chasing partitioning suggestions. Problem is, you guessed it, space. As always with SSD's, space is at a premium. Formatted I am apparently going to end up with about 58gig usable. A disk usage analysis of my current Fedora 14 install on a 7200rpm drive gives me 30g of files in home, and about 15g to root.

Of that 30g of home files, 8g is tied up in Thunderbird alone, so was going to allocate about 45 to /home; and about 3g to swap. Problem is / (root) I have 8 gig tied up in /usr, and another 5 gig tied up in /var. Is this normal? Can I delete some of those files or will a fresh install of Fedora 15 blow out eventually to fill all that. I know I am trapped with /usr on the SSD but can I move /var to a 7200rpm instead of chocking up my teeny weeny ssd? What have other people partitioned their SSD's as?

Fedora :: Speaker Icon On Task Bar Keeps Getting Changed

Dec 7, 2009

F12 completely patched. Can someone provide some insight into the various volume controls available and why they seem to conflict with each other? The incognito application that loads up on the task bar as a speaker icon keeps getting changed. I try to nail it at 100% but it keeps getting altered - how I don't know. BTW - I say its an incognito application as there is no way to identify what piece of software it actually represents. I assume it's the gnome-volume-control-applet, but there is no way to know for sure as it is devoid of any identification. I run rhythmbox and its volume control also gets altered from where I attempt to set it.

I assume that gnome-volume-control-applet is the master to set a limit on what anything else can do. I then assume that rhythmbos's volume control operates within the envelope that gnome-volume-control-applet allows. Both assumptions are probably wrong as nothing makes any sense. Maybe all the pulseaudio stuff is also in there somewhere messing with the controls, but I see no user space apps to influence pulseaudio. To top it off, I can push the volume control on rhythmbox around from 100% down to 16% and there is no discernible change in volume. When I hit 14% there is a halving of volume, and from there on down to 0% seems to function linearly as expected. Why is there this non responsive range between 16% and 100%?

Fedora Installation :: Should Choose LVM Or The Classical Partitioning

Feb 6, 2009

I need to upgrade a machine to F10 (64-bit), and I need to make a decision on whether to start using LVM or stick with the classical partitioning mode. I have used RedHat/Fedora for quite some time, and always used the standard partitions. Fedora documentation says that LVM (Logical Volume Management) partitions provide a number of advantages over standard partitions. Also, numerous contributors on these forums seem to favor LVMs. In order to make an educated decision I need answers to some questions:

1. What are these advantages that Fedora documentation refers to?
2. Is it easier to work with LVMs than with classic partitions?
3. For those of you who have experienced working with LVM partitions, what were the advantages/disadvantages to working with LVM partitions?
