Debian Multimedia :: CTRL-ALT-F* Doesn't Work Anymore To Switch To Console?

Jan 26, 2010

not sure exactly when this broke, but for some reason I'm not able to use CTRL-ALT-F1 anymore to fall back to the first virtual console.I can kill X with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE just fine, but I'd like to be able to get a normal shell to kill things when I've messed too much with graphical stuff.

Fedora :: Switch User From Console?

Nov 15, 2010

As everyone knows, the graphic user can be swithed with Ctrl+Alt+F7 (or F1 in Fedora). There are also a few text mode consoles - Ctrl+Alt+F2...F6.

Fortunately, there is a Switch User button when the screen is locked from Gnome with the default screensaver.

The question is how can a new graphical user be switched from console (Ctrl+Alt+F2...F6) if the screen is locked by some other screensaver which does not have this function?

Ubuntu :: Cant Login To Console Using Ctrl+alt+f1

Sep 15, 2010

I am using kubuntu 10.04..i am a new guy here..

i unfortunately removed all my files from /home folder..

rm -rf ~ /. picasa / (ya..i know..)

As some of the files were really important i tried recovering data using foremost..i used the command

foremost -i /dev/sda1 -o /mnt/foremost

After execution of this command it prompted a process..it was downloading something..and i left the computer for an hour or so..when i return there was nothing on screen..so i reloaded the system..And after that when i try to login i get the error

"xsession: warning: unable to write to /tmp; xsession may exit with an error"..so when i googled for it i found its because there is no memmory in my /root ..so i tried login via console (tried ctrl+alt+f1..after the login screen appears..when i type ctrl+alt+f1 i get a black screen)..but nothings happening...

but the problem is when i type (ctrl+alt+f1) i am getting a black screen only...and just a cursor blinking..nothing else..ctrl+alt+f1-f6 give me the same result..and when i try (ctrl+alt+f7) it goes back to the screen with the error....how can i login to console now...

Ubuntu :: Possible To Use Ctrl- ( 1 / 2 / 3 ) To Switch Tabs

May 22, 2010

Since I still want to do all my programming on Win32 platform, VirtualBox should be fine there, but would VirtualBox be able to manage games ( BF2, CSS )?If so then well I'm going to Ubuntu permenatly, if not, I'll just Dual boot between Windows & Ubuntu, Ubuntu for everything ( VirtualBox for programming ), and Windows os for Gaming.

My only problem there, is having to restart every time I want to play a game, that's why I was hoping VirtualBox could manage, wouldn't have to be any, fancy resolution. Also, with Firefox on linux, is it possible to use Ctrl- ( 1, 2, 3, etc... ) to switch tabs, on windows this is possible, and an a feature I love.

Ubuntu :: Ctrl-alt-f* Does Not Produce Virtual Console?

Mar 12, 2011

ve read some stuff regarding problems with virtual consoles not appearing for some graphics settings, but I think this problem is different.Just a few days ago I had no problem using ctrl-alt-f6 (for example) to get to a virtual console outside of the normal X environment. That no longer works. Nothing happens, no distorted screen, I'm just stuck in the normal X session that comes up as if I did nothing. I didn't make any configuration changes, though I suppose some update could have caused it?I may have read that this is some problem in grub2? If so, is there a way I can get around it without trying to switch back to grub1? I'd rather not mess too much with the bootloaders if I don't have to

Ubuntu :: Ctrl+alt+f5 Starts A Console \ Can't Find, Though, How To Change That

Sep 25, 2010

I can't find, though, how to change that. In DOSBox, ctrl+alt+f5 starts and stops video capture, but Ubuntu's command took precedence when I did that. I had to hard shut down before doing some searching and finding out ctrl+alt+f7 gets me out of there...that doesn't help me with the problem of taking video on DOSBox though. I went to ystem>Preferences>Keyboard Shortcuts to see if I could change the command or disable it, but it wasn't listed...so I'm stuck. I don't want ctrl+alt+f5 to bring me to a console, so how do I make it not do that?

1) I can no longer switch to a text terminal with ctrl+alt+F# - it worked with vesa driver. There is no option "VTswitch" in xorg.conf
2) The new fglrx does not give 3D, also very bad performance - dragging windows on screen makes them stutter for instance.

Slackware :: Reset Default Keymap Then Switch Ctrl>>Capslock Not Working?

Jan 8, 2011

I'm running through an Emacs tutorial and I was trying to figure out how to exchange CTRL and CAPSLOCK.

1. From the Emacs Wiki, i saw

Code:

As super-user:

$ loadkeys emacs
$ echo "loadkeys emacs" >> /etc/rc.d/rc.local

so, maybe stupidly I tried this. Which seems to have changed nothing.

so then I try

Code:

loadkeys -d

to try and get back to the default. Which doesn't seem to work. so then thinking i should reset everything, try to go in /usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty and do

Code:

loadkeys defkeymap.map.gz

Finally, I go into /etc/X11 and edit xorg.conf-vesa to uncomment

Code:

# If you'd like to switch the positions of your capslock and
# control keys, use:
#
Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:swapcaps"
and restart.

To no avail...

I know it doesn't happen to many other people but happened to me. Any ideas how to troubleshoot/fix?

I can switch back into GUI mode using ctrl-alt-f7. Also at times I see the word Ubuntu with 4 dots and 2 of them are orange if that's of any use. Like the initial boot loading screen.

I've tried going back to the default display drivers and that hasn't solved it. I'm using a CRT that's connected up to my display card via a VGA > DVI converter. *I've just checked and I can't get into recovery mode either

OpenSUSE Install :: Switch User Fails On Greeter Console / Setting Now Under KDE47?

Aug 29, 2011

I am running 11.4_64, KDE47 (recent update from 46)
I have three Suse Linux pcs on my network.
I'll call them desktop, media center and laptop.

I am logged in to my desktop , I want to open a new session and log in to my media center.

From GUI, I select application launcher - leave -switch user and get a fresh kdm greeter screen.

On the Greeter screen, I select Menu - Remote Login
A window opens displaying three machines - my desktop, my laptop and my media center.
When I move the mouse into the new window to select the media center as the new target machine, the window immediately closes.

I have Xdmcp access enabled in kdmrc on all three systems(and rebooted).

This did work fine back when I was on KDE45 and KDE46.

Is there a new permission or setting now under KDE47?

After about one second, i can continue working as usual. Changing Tabs by just clicking on one does not freeze anything...Maybe some of you would think now if I am crazy because of complaining about such a little thing, but it is really annoying if you are used to work fluently with ff.Edit:I today noticed, that not only shortcuts in firefox, but all Hotkeys freeze my mouse for a second. For examle ctrl+c, ctrl+v, super+e or anything else.Do you have any Idea what causes this behaviour? Reinstalling ubuntu didn't change anything

OpenSUSE :: Ctrl+z And Ctrl+c Do Not Work Without A Third Keystroke

Feb 3, 2010

I just spent a few days ripping out all the broken/buggy apps that are in the opensuse 11.2 official repos so I can finally get working software(openoffice, thunderbird, wine, eclipse, rubygems, rails, and a few others required getting the "official" versions from their respective websites to avoid strange behavior and outright broken functionality).

All of which makes updating more annoying and time-consuming. Why are opensuse packages so different anyway? Anyway, the last thing that I have noticed to fix is Konsole. For some really bizarre reason ctrl+z and ctrl+c do not work without a third keystroke: enter.Maybe this is something new with the KDE team, since they seem bent on making simple things that already work more complex, but given my experience with crappy packages in the suse repos, I am thinking this is the problem. I have looked over all the config settings that I can find and nothing fixes this affront to productivity.
