Nov 29, 2010Around 2008 i seem to remember PartEd on the command-line was able to rescue deleted partitions and gave a choice of whether to recover the partition as a Primary or Logical Partition. I have tried testdisk but didn't really grok what i was doing. I successfully moved a "Windows Recovery" partition to the end of my hard-drive, immediately after the drive's Extended Partition.

"If you expect that you or other users will store data on the system, create a separate partition for the /home directory within a volume group. With a separate /home partition, you may upgrade or reinstall Fedora without erasing user data files." seems to suggest I have to create a separate physical partition and assign that to /home. But reading elsewhere it seems to suggest logical volume acts like a partition. My goal is to make it easy in case fedora is hosed and I have to re-install it without affecting /home where my cirtical data resides. Given above do I need to create a separate physical partition or I am just fine?
I have a second hard disk that originally had windows and all my data. Windows is hosed but I can see my data from within Fedora and Windows is gone and I created created new partition in its place which used ot be the C:/ drive appears as 53 Gb filesystem. My data which was originally D drive appears as 215 GB filesystem. As given in [URL] I want to create a new logical volume in 53 Gb filesystem which I want to use as space for virtual disk to install guest OS's in KVM. Nov 5, 2010I'm currently dual booting Windows 7 64bit and Ubuntu 10.10 each on primary partitions. Then on the other 2 partitions I have the manufacturer recovery partition (which I am not sure I should remove...), and then a partition for storage and files. Now I want an Arch Linux installation on the hard drive, but obviously I cannot create a new primary partition because I already have 4. I found out that linux can run from a logical partition (which you can have multiple of)..However I do not want to format my Ubuntu partition and I'd prefer to keep the data on there all intact. Is there a way to move my Ubuntu installation (on the primary partition) to an extended partition where I could put multiple logical partitions for multiple linux installations?

General :: Cannot Create Extended Partition For Ubuntu
Jan 26, 2011Okay so first of all, let me give you a background info.I have an HP Mini 311 with a 250GB hdd and 2GB Ram. I have successfully setup a tripple-boot with SnowLeopard/Win7/Ubuntu10.10.Okay so
First, using "Disk Utility," I format the OSX partiton to Extended(journaled) and install OSX accordingly.
Second, I install Windows 7.
Third, I use Netbookinstaller to install Chameleon 2.0 onto the OSX partition.
Fourth, using DIskPart.exe i set the Win7 Partition(#3) as active and then run the Repair(and Restart) option in the Win7 USB install media, to fix some boot error I do not know much about. Then use"DIskPart. exe" again, to set the EFI partition(#1) as active partition again.I now have a fully operational dual-boot with SnowLeo and Windows 7.
I setup a triple-boot with SnowLeo/Win7/Ubuntu10.10 by using GParted to add and format 2 additional partitions. The first formatted Ext4 for Ubuntu to be installed onto and the second i set about 4GB as "Swap" area.Then i just install Ubuntu with the Grub bootloader being installed onto the same partition as Ubuntu.I now have a fully operational triple-boot with SnowLeo, Win7 and Ubuntu.So I saw this link about creating an additional "storage" partition, on a dual-boot system, and setting it up so that Windows 7 and Ubuntu can share the same files automatically.
I really want to set this up on my triple-boot system, and here is the problem i run into: Simply adding another partition, messes up my windows 7 boot entirely. And i figured out the cause of this might be due to harddrives only being able to handle 4 primary partitions. So i figure that if setup Ubuntu and the Swap-area into an Extended Partiton, this would solve all of my problems.I cannot figure out how to setup an extended partition on my harddrive without messing something use up irreparably. General :: Extended Sata Partition Shrunk At 15 Partition Limit - How To Re-enlarge
Jun 2, 2010extended sata partition shrunk at 15 partition limit, how to re-enlarge i hit the 15 partition limit, forgetting it now exists for sata drives, thinking i would add more. upon creation of the 15th, it squished the end of the extended partition to meet the last logical partition, leaving a large unallocated portion after the extended partition, which seemingly nothing can be done with, just sat being wasted space. i have since deleted a few of those partitions, but so far have still failed to find a way to recoup the unallocated space back into the extended partition.

if necessary, i'll do it the painful long winded way of backing up and starting the extended partition again from scratch, but i really rather wouldnt have to do that. i'm sure there must be a way of telling the extended partition to once again reach the end of the drive.

May 12, 2011I am not really sure if the title makes any sense or if it even possible. Basically I am currently triple booting with Mac osx on the first partition windows 7 on the second and ubuntu linux on the 3rd with a swap partition. So basically on my 2TB harddrive
Mac (200gb)
Windows (200gb)
Linux (200gb)
Swap (8gb)
NTFS(1592gb)
The last partition is formatted as ntfs using Gparted, windows cannot detect it. The windows disk partitioner shows the swap and ntfs partitions as unformatted. I can unformat the space and use the windows partition to add format it as ntfs but it would format the linux swap partition as well. I am worried that it could potentially screw up everything on my harddrive. My question is. What do I need to do to get the ntfs parition recognized by windows (should I use the windows partitioner)?

May 18, 2010I've got a server that needs more space. To achieve this we added space (by extending the VMware disk attached to it).Normally this isn't an issue, because we just add an new partition and LVM it from there, but this host predates our deployment of LVM everywhere.
Our current theory is that the unallocated sectors can not be assigned because they aren't part of the extended partition, and thus ... we go in a circle.So what i believe the way forward is to extend sda4 so that i can then create an sda10 inside of it. Anyone have any ideas on how to do this? I was thinking gparted may do the trick ... but being a server i'm in runlevel3, with no X...

sda8 /SUSE 11.2I then made some changes with gparted (from PartedMagic 5.5) to create an ntfs partition to simulate a condition where someone may want to delete that partition and use the free space for linux. I then deleted that partition, sda2 then sda5 (swap) and taking some screenshots, went about resizing partitions to use that free space and then recreate swap. the intention being to create a basic guide on how to go about this.I have previously only had my swap at the end of the extended partition, deleting itand recreating it later had caused little trouble.I realize that a resize/move operation would have been a better choice.What I was not expecting was the partition number changes that occurred.

Jun 22, 2011I installed Redhat Enterprise 3 on one of my servers. In my haste I didn't properly partition both Hard Drives and only properly partitioned one of them. Thus now I have

Where /dev/sda1 is actually a 80 GB hard drive. Is there anyway I can safely and easily repartition the unpartitioned space without causing a huge mess? I have a very important Oracle database on /dev/sdb1 and thus I want to be able to back it up on the second disk. I can create a partition on that drive?

Most of the partitions (including root) are on an extended partition that is sized for this smaller geometry. The person who did this has already been scolded, but life goes on.fdisk shows this:

At the end of the drive I have 32 gigs of free space still contained in the logical volume group. I want to remove it from the LVG but this is on one device. Supposedly there is a way to do this, pvresize and fdisk.

That's normal. pvresize "just" updates the PV header and VG metadata.

Yes. That was mentioned in my reply: "Then shrink the partition in the partition table."
You can use fdisk or any other partition table editor for this. Some don't support resizing a partition. In that case, you can delete and create a smaller one. If doing the delete/create dance, you *must* create the new partition on the same cylinder boundary as the current one to preserve the current data.
Ive read from every source on LVM its not possible to do this. Why on earth would any Linux developer put LVM on a single drive system by default? Were they even paying attention? I dont mean to go off on a rant but if there are multiple drives LVM makes sense. However if you only have one large drive LVM holds your system hostage and you have to crawl thru the pit of hell to get it back.
I understand you have a choice in the matter when you install Fedora but its really the worst possible choice for default. Many newcomers to Linux run into this problem with LVM. If you cannot resize LVG's the software should have never been put into a Linux distro in the first place.

However, I end up with a file in my home directory called .minecraft and when I try to access it, I receive:
