View 8 RepliesI am trying to connect to a cisco console port using the usb to serial converter. I am using minicom and I changed me setting to reflect the USB converter cable, but it isn't working. I have set my baud rate to 9600, 8 data bits and no parity. Minicom acts as if it is connected (it doesn't give any errors), but there is nothing on the screen and nothing happens when I type. Also, I use the tail command and it sees the usb connector connected when I unplug it and plug it back in.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI dual boot Windows/Fedora 11 on my Dell Latitude D830 laptop, which has an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG card and I have just bought a Linksys WRT160NL wireless router. I am currently trying to set up OpenWRT linux on the router. Because of the nature of my problem I have also posted this on their forum.I am having trouble connecting to my OpenWRT install via Fedora. Things seem okay in Windows, but when I try to connect from linux my laptop locks up completely and I have to hard reboot. I previously have never had any trouble connecting to any other router with this install of Fedora.

the real console after text based login has the normal layout "[root@Fedora ~]#" but consoles within x only show "bash-4.0$"

New clean install of Fedora 12 (my worst Linux experience so far, should have sticked with Fedora 9, it was old but it was stable, unlike this half-backed... whatever it is). Anyway, to the matter at hand (one of the many):How do I switch to the console from the graphical login screen? CTRL+ALT+Fn doesn't work, CTRL+ALT+Backspace doesn't kill X, it's a NIS machine with only root as local account

View 1 Replies View RelatedAs everyone knows, the graphic user can be swithed with Ctrl+Alt+F7 (or F1 in Fedora). There are also a few text mode consoles - Ctrl+Alt+F2...F6.
Fortunately, there is a Switch User button when the screen is locked from Gnome with the default screensaver.
The question is how can a new graphical user be switched from console (Ctrl+Alt+F2...F6) if the screen is locked by some other screensaver which does not have this function?
I tried the cd command the way it ussualy works and nothing , Im new to fedora is there something else to it
View 4 Replies View RelatedI still haven't put my finger on the details, but I wanted to see if this rings any bells. When I leave my Fedora 15 system for several hours and then come back, it is sometimes unresponsive for several minutes before it finally thaws out. This is beyond get-a-cup-of-coffee slow - drop-off-the-dry-cleaning-and-pick-up-some-milk slow would probably be a more accurate characterization. It's basically a stock F15 install with vmware player installed and running two virtual machines. One of the virtual machines is also stock F15, and I've been waiting on it for over an hour since thawing out the host system this morning. The clock at the top says "Tue 03:53" (the current time is Wed 11:00).

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue with LVM on an external USB drive. When booting, the system drops into a recovery console if the external drive is not powered on because it cannot find the volume group and members. The setup is one system drive with fedora 12 installed, one internal data drive; LVM volume group vg1 with 5 partitions and one external backup drive LVM volume group vg2 with 5 partitions. Both the data drive and external backup are the same size and identical layout.
I use an rsync script that I wrote to execute backups (mirroring actually).
fstab is set 'noauto' on the external partitions.
I am new to LVM and I'm stumped as how to make the system 'ignore' the external drive at boot, if not powered on.
I am setting up a system for students to use to run lab-based exams. On bootup, the system needs to download an encrypted file containing the exam files, and then ask for a decryption password.
I want to do this during system startup (before anyone logs in). But I am having trouble getting keyboard input at this point.
I've put a script in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S99examsetup along the following lines:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
echo -n "Enter password:"
read EXAMPW
echo "You gave me: $EXAMPW"
but it doesn't respond to keyboard input. I have tried appending "< /dev/console" but this also doesn't work; in fact if I insert 'tty' before the first 'echo', it tells me that /dev/console is the tty being used for input anyway.
Is there a way round this? I can use plymouth ask-for-password, but that doesn't seem very portable, and it interacts badly with the graphics driver on one of my machines.
I am having some trouble logging into my machine: it seems to not accept my password. I am fairly sure I am typing it correctly. I can work around it easily enough by logging into the console and changing the password, but it is annoying.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have install Fedora 13 on my machine (Intel 815 Chipset with graphic card of nVidia GeForce 256), but the default resolution of text console wound have be about 1024x768. I intend this machine as a simple samba server (without X Window), so just a low-resolution monitor will work with it. However, this monitor can't work with the resolution higher than 800x600, I have to change the resolution lower. I have searched the solutions for this problem on Google. Most of them thought I should fix /boot/grub/grub.conf, append "vga=769", "vga=771" or even "vga=ask" to the end of the line start with the word "kernel". I have tried but all of them doesn't work. Just like Fedora 13 use the value from the other configure file overwrite the one list in grub.conf. As everyone knows, if I installed and launched X Window on my machine, I could query and change the resolution with command "xrandr". Are there some similar ones that can work on text console?

I am looking for a good and practical console application. I use midnight commander a lot, and I find it frustrating every time I press the F10 key it displays the drop menu items using the terminal. On occasions I make invisible the menu bar, by disabling in the view menu.
So I am looking for a good console application that when I use midnight commander if I press the function key buttons it doesn't display the drop down menu options.
i was using a serial console program (not minicom) two weeks back but took a break and have no idea what it is! man, it was awesome, too. it had a nice gui, similar to hyperterminal...and from what i think i remember it came packaged with f14.
