Debian :: Totally Remove "Evolution" Apps?
Jul 21, 2010I want to get rid of all the evolution apps from my system since I do not use them at all. I just want to ask here before doing any harm in case there might be consequences.

Debian :: Totally Replacing Gnome With Xfce 4.8?
Jun 27, 2011I have been trying to decide which distro of linux i want to use, and i decided to go with debian because i keep reading that it is very stable. I currently am installing it in in virtualbox first to make sure i like it. I wanted to use xfce instead of gnome but forgot to specify that in the beginning. The install takes a while and i didn't want to start all over if that is possible. I am wondering how i could completely replace gnome with xfce.

Open gnome terminal.
Su to root or use sudo :
# su
Search with yum to your language:
# yum search hunspell
<snip long output list with different languages>
hunspell-nl.noarch : Dutch hunspell dictionaries
I want the Dutch hunspell dictionary, but you fill out the right language for the language support you want: # yum install hunspell-nl
This will install the dutch hunspell dictionary or the dictionary of your choice. After you installed this dictionary it will be immediately available in gnome apps and Evolution.
Debian Multimedia :: Totally Blank Screen After Upgrading To Jessie (AMD64)
Jul 21, 2015After upgrading to Jessie (AMD64) I have a totally blank screen, not even a blinking cursor. The video card is a GeForce 6200 and I have nouveau loaded. I originally had an nvidia module in Wheezy. I decided to use the instructions at the Debian NvidiaGraphicsDriver wiki to install the NVIDIA legacy package. That was worse. The nvidia module was unloaded in the X.org log, and the screen presented as a login console.
I tediously removed all NVIDIA components, and reverted to nouveau since its report in X.org log says it supports GeForce 6 series cards. That brought me back to a totally blank screen. The nouveau module lists as "video" doing lsmod. Both gdm3 and the X server processes are up and running. Other than reporting that "nv" couldn't be loaded, there is nothing in X.org log that appear abnormal. The .xsessions_error log is troubling however, but I don't have the knowledge to interpret.

Jul 16, 2011I haven't tried any random password patterns yet but I have tried knoppix because of a suggestion and it didn't work. I am useing knoppix as my OS not from CD or DVD. I would like to add and remove unused or needed apps. My linux language is week for the time being so I use the Software Center option from the Preferences option from the Main Menue.When I click on the remove icon a screen comes up asking for the Authentication Password and I don't have it, I as can not change the time on the desktop because it says that I am not the owner. How do I reset all the passwords and regain complete control of my system

I've seen a solution that seemed to work for someone else but when I go into the Terminal and type in the commands it asks for my sudo password and I have no idea what that means/is because I never set any kind of password like that.

Jan 15, 2010Using Synaptic and/or terminal is great and so easy, but i have noticed that applications are not always the latest versions that are in the repository ie cups for instance So if i wanted to download the latest app from a website, what is the best way to install, based on having an earlier version already installed. Is it better to just install over an older version or remove the older version, and then install the new version clean
If you remove and older version of an application first, what is the best method for doing this and removing any residual files etc that might be left on your system?

1. why is it that when i add a ppa to the repository and then i type sudo apt-get update,it has an error for that ppa but i can still install it? deluge is the main one that does that.
2. when i install apps, it tells me to use apt-get autoremove to remove unused packages but i need some of them like java etc. how do i take some apps off of the autoremove list?

The reason why I'm opening a new thread is to ask: is gnome-keyring manager expected to have two entries for couchdb in the default behavior?
I want to erase my address book. After Ctrl+A > Ctrl+D > Yes and no effect, I can't delete single nor multiple contacts. Evolution states:

In Italian that means: Cannot delete the contact. Other error. (Maybe: undefined eror, unexpected error in en localization).

Aug 14, 2011I'm running it on a Toshiba Satellite laptop.After getting the OS installed and configured evolution, I did a backup of the evolution on my desktop version of 10.04 and attempted to restore it to evolution on my laptop and while it did seem to work, it became corrupted and now won't load.
I uninstalled multiple times and reinstalled to get the same problem. I also removed a number of folders trying to get a clean install but ran into the same problem as soon as restored again.How can I completely remove evolution so that I can get a truly clean install where the wizard comes up for set up again once I open it for the first time?

Mar 31, 2010everytime i try to install the updates from the update manager i get this error message:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, i have tried running the sudo dpkg --configure -a in the terminal but when it asks for the password the keyboard stops working so i cant type anything into the terminal. can anyone help me fix this? My other problem was when i try to run the Add/Remove Applications i can't ever install any of the software because it says its "waiting for other tasks" i'm not sure why its doing this either.

Feb 25, 2011I am handling email with evolution 2.28.3, on 10.04.2 LTS. It is up to date. I do not wish to use "ubuntu one", so I removed it by following the instructions on their launchpad page. However, I still cannot stop evolution trying to use "ubuntu one". For example if I R-click an address in evolution and choose Add to address book, it defaults to adding it to "ubuntu one", not my local address book which I have to select every time.
I have been through all the configuration options in evolution, and de-selected "ubuntu one" wherever I see it. Evolution is still defaulting to saving addresses to "ubuntu one".

Jun 2, 2011I'm trying to get compiz setup but it is not having any affect at all. I installed it and went to the synaptic system manager and added all the compiz plugins that were there. I restarted several times before and after going to the synaptic system manager. It said installed successfully, however it has no effect so it isn't "on" whatsoever. I have watched ..... tutorials on how to set it up. It looked easy enough but did not work for me. I have tried commands from tutorials but I don't know enough or how to edit folder contents. I think they were old tutorials anyways, I am running the newest squeeze debian distro. The 3d desktop was one reason I wanted to try linux. If I can't get the basic apps like this to work then there is no reason for me to use linux.

May 24, 2011it was difficult for me to get it set up. So, when Squeeze became the stable release, I strayed. Tried Ubuntu, Mandriva, PCLOS, Mepis, both KDE and Gnome, and after using Lenny for several months, they all sucked. So I'm back, and although it took me several hours, over a few days, and 50 searches, I have Squeeze set up just how I want. I love how fast and stable it is!!
I've become a big fan of Gnome over the past year, because of how simple, fast and stable it is. But, there are a few KDE apps I prefer over the ones available for Gnome. I want to install K3b, KTorrent, digiKam/showFoto, and probably Amarok (although I haven't given Rythembox a fair chance). I realize this will install the KDE base, but other than the space taken up, is there any disadvantage to doing this? If there's a chance it will affect the speed and stability of the system, I'll learn to live without them.
Is there a way to extract the MD5 SUM from a .iso I download in Gnome?? K3b does it automatically before the burn. Does Brasero do this and I'm just missing it?
I've tried using Transmission a few times before to download torrents, but never with success, yet with KTorrent, I just click on the file and it starts downloading it.

I'm not sure what happened but installing Adobe Air in Debian is like installing in Windows XP -- I used the .bin file instead of the .deb because the .deb say's Adobe Air is 32 bit application.
So it is installed (sucessful or not I still don't know) -=- I go to tweetdeck site and got to its desktop page where there should be an install button -- however, there aren't any or it wont show -- it partially show like a running circle but it's not running. Then when I click on it -- it disappears.
I tried installing other air app like livebrush but the same -- the button is not shown. My Sid is updated as of now. I also have google chrome browser -- the behavior is the same as with iceweasel v3.5.10
