May 13, 2010
i know that the evolution icon on the panel is part of the indicators stuff, but is there any way to remove the evolution icon without removing the indicators? maybe configuring the indicator stuff to not show evolution? i looked into removing evolution, but it seems to be really embedded.

Is it possible to remove evolution notification icon and stay only with volume control?I appreciate the effort made to integrate everything in 10.04, but it is not a really nice feature to me, since i do not like empathy and i hate evolution. I think ubuntu should put more effort in freedom and less effort in making people all obliged to use the same apps.

I have the Assistive Technologies Blue Icon in the Top Right Panel, and I'd like to Remove it. I have un-checked "Show" in the APPLICATIONS Menu after unlocking that Panel. I have Dasher, On Screen Keyboard, and Orca un-checked so they don't "Show". I also have Assistive Technologies un-checked in SYSTEM -> PREFERENCES. But, the Assistive Technologies Blue Icon is still being displayed to the Left of my Wifi Icon in the Top Right Panel. How do I get it REMOVED?

Kwallet is off. Then I install a wireless device under WPA. Wired icon starts to change to wireless icon, but does not and goes back to wired icon. Hovering pointer over wired icon shows wired device installed as well as wireless device. How do I keep the wireless icon in place after installing WPA to wireless device?

I started up Amarok and an Amarok icon appeared beside my email icon. After I was finished with Amarok, I removed it from my panel. Unfortunately, my email icon and my volume icon have both disappeared. When I use add to panel, evolution is not there. Where is it?I solved it. All I had to do was to right click on the top panel, choose add to panel and then choose

I'd like to have a notification icon popup when a new email message comes in. I find that I need to keep the Evolution window open to see the popup notifier, which kinda defeats the purpose of being notified when you've already opened the program and can see the message right there.

The short version: I have created a launcher shortcut on my Desktop for Evolution Mail, and right now it uses the springboard icon. I would like to use the icon that I see in the applications menu launcher for Evolution. Where do I find this icon?
The longer version: A few Ubuntu versions ago, I got rid of the Evolution Mail icon from the top panel, as there was no apparent way for me to set mail accounts to other than the standard ports. I went with Thunderbird instead.
Well, while Thunderbird gives me a box to set the port number in, Evolution doesn't, but I can still specify my nonstandard port by placing a : and the port number after: example.com:26 for a mail server at example.com om port 26.
Now, I have put Evolution Mail to use, and have created a desktop launcher for it. For now I am using the default springboard icon. I see the envelope icon in the applications menu for Evolution but I have no idea of the icon's address. I am familiar with Windows XP, and it is easy to assign a program's icon to a new shortcut. I have just added shortcut for example.exe. I go to the shortcut's Properties and click on the icon, and immediately see the program or library file that contains the icon I am currently using, either as an embedded icon or set of icons, or I see an .ico file for that icon. I can navigate to Program Filesexample and see either example.exe with its embedded icons or example.ico.
I created a new shortcut on my Ubuntu Desktop. and was presented with a springboard icon. I click on the icon in the creation process and am presented with a pile of generic icons, much the same as with Windows.
if I open the Properties and click on the icon, I end up looking at a listing in my Home directory. This is regardless of where the current icon is located. I looked in /usr/share/applications/evolution and saw icons folder, but it had no envelope for Evolution Mail. All I see is icons dealing with the calendar, in anything from 16x16 to 48x48 and scalable.

I am using:
Code:
Ubuntu 10.4
2.6.32-21-generic
Evolution 2.83.3
I have noticed that when I get a new email, it never shows a new mail icon in the panel. I had the same problem with 9.10, and I thought the problem would go away when I upgraded to 10.4. I have checked the properties in Mail preferences:
Code:
Play sound - yes
Display a notification - yes
Indicate new messages in panel - yes

When I got Ubuntu 10.04 beta the first thing I did was to uninstall Empathy as it was crashing a lot and I was used to some other application.Currently I want to use Empathy and reinstalled it.My problem is that instead of chat conversations "merge" with the evolution envelope icon Empathy seems to have it's own static icon. It's annoying because the icon is the same "green orb" whether I have a new message or not. The problem is not the version (2.30.0.1) as a personal friend has the same version and has it working fine.I already searched google and forums and tried re-installing empathy, indicator-applet, indicator-messages or evolution-indicator, cleaning cache and all.

I don't know exactly why the Ubuntu developers keep the Evolution version to 2.28 instead of version 2.30 like the rest of Gnome in 10.04. But here is how to upgrade evolution to version 2.30. I think this version is way more stable than the previous version 2.28. And more important to me, the evolution-mapi plugin is way more stable.
Here is the howto:

I'm really new to Ubuntu, and am running 10.04. Anyway, I accidentally got rid of the Evolution icon in my Notification Area. Every time I try to put an icon in that section, it will not let me, and makes me put the icon on the left side of it, like on the main part of the panel. I do not know if I just hid the icon, or if I actually removed it, and I am sure the fix is really simple, I just can't seem to figure out how to do it. Also, I opened the Universal Access program when checking out all the cool things in my new OS, but I can't figure out how to hide that icon.
So if you could tell me how to unhide Evolution and hide Universal Access, in the Notification Area, that would be awesome.
Here is an image if you do not know where I am talking about, or whatever

After a recent upgrade I have lost the top right icon in the top panel - so I cannot Set Status, Lock Screen, Guest Session, Switch User ..... Restart, Shutdown. I have right clicked on the top panel and installed the Shutdown icon so I can shutdown but I have lost all the other functions including the 60secs countdown. Is there any way I can get the standard top right icon in the top panel?

I am using the fully updated version of Ubuntu 10.4. The volume icon is missing from the top panel and adding the "notification area" does not do anything - I can double-click the icon, or drag it over, and nothing appears in the panel. Adding the "Indicator Applet" also has the same result. I do not know what applet to add, nor do I know why the volume icon is missing. The power icon, the network icon, the mail icon, and the rest of the applets are all there - only the volume icon is missing.
Also, when I press "fn + pg up or pg dn," it would usually change the volume and display a notification showing that the volume changed. This does not happen anymore: no notification, no sound change. I can still hear audio, but can not change the level.

I've upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04, and now I'm experiencing some problems with the displaying of panels and icons that I'm hoping someone can help me to fix.
Situation: Running 11.04 in latest virtualbox (4.06, with guest additions installed) on a macbook pro running snow leopard (10.6.7). I'm in gnome classic (no effects) because I'm not yet used to gnome 3 and compiz doesn't run all that well for me in this virtualization set-up. But the problem, described below, is consistent from gnome 3 to classic (with effects) to classic (without effects).
Problem: When I first log in after a reboot, everything looks great in the default settings (ambiance theme, I think), but after ~ 15 seconds, the panels and icons revert to an odd looking theme that I don't particularly care for. And trying to change the settings in the "Appearance" preferences is of no help, i.e., I can change the themes, but the panels and icons remain in a stock, old-school gnome-ish theme.

Why are we forced to keep evolution components!? I tried to remove them and ended up losing gnome-applets and a host of other things. This is ridiculous. I liken it to IE being tied into Windows.

When I run Banshee (installed from the repos, no bleeding edge version here) and I close it to the Gnome Panel, the icon overhangs the panel by a few pixels. This picture shows what I mean: [URL]
I have tried increasing the panel height (currently on the lowest settings - 20) but this doesn't help at all.
