Debian Multimedia :: Totally Blank Screen After Upgrading To Jessie (AMD64)

Jul 21, 2015

After upgrading to Jessie (AMD64) I have a totally blank screen, not even a blinking cursor. The video card is a GeForce 6200 and I have nouveau loaded. I originally had an nvidia module in Wheezy. I decided to use the instructions at the Debian NvidiaGraphicsDriver wiki to install the NVIDIA legacy package. That was worse. The nvidia module was unloaded in the X.org log, and the screen presented as a login console.

I tediously removed all NVIDIA components, and reverted to nouveau since its report in X.org log says it supports GeForce 6 series cards. That brought me back to a totally blank screen. The nouveau module lists as "video" doing lsmod. Both gdm3 and the X server processes are up and running. Other than reporting that "nv" couldn't be loaded, there is nothing in X.org log that appear abnormal. The .xsessions_error log is troubling however, but I don't have the knowledge to interpret.

Debian Configuration :: Blank Console Screen With 2.6.32-trunk-amd64?

Apr 13, 2010

I'm always getting a blank console screen after booting a 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 kernel in squeeze. I still can read the line "Loading, please wait ..." in the display for a second - then it's completely black until X windows is starting. When I try switching from the X console to another virtual console (by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 e. g.), the complete system freezes. I have to hard reboot then. When I boot the previous 2.6.32-3-amd64 kernel instead, everything is fine as expected, though. There's a line "GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x16@60" in /etc/default/grub as well as a line "set gfxpayload=keep" in /etc/grub.d/00_header. So the problem might be framebuffer related in any way. Any ideas what could be tried? The system is a Latitude E6500 with a Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller

Debian Multimedia :: Sound Is Tinny After Upgrading To Jessie

Jan 16, 2015

I upgraded my system from Wheezy to Jessie and now the audio is tinny. It sounds like a lot of the bass is being chopped off. This happens in YouTube's HTML5 video player, VLC and whatever player it is that Thunar launches for avi files.I'm using Xfce as my desktop, if that matters.I looked around for an equalizer app for pulseaudio but was surprised to find that the there isn't one, or at least not one which is still maintained.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen When Booting With 10.04 - Amd64?

May 2, 2010

I have a Asus A8N-E motherboard with AMD64 processor and NVidia 6600 GT graphics card.I downloaded the AMD64 version of 10.04 (the boot+live cd) and tried booting with it. After looking at the screen showing Ubuntu loading with 5 dots moving forward for about 5minutes, the screen went blank (not completely blank as power-off but a very dark grey color). I waited for about 10-15 minutes in this state but nothing happened.During this whole 10-15 min period the disk usage on the machine was high.Eventually, I just turned off the machine and booted into windows (which was already present on my machine) successfully. Is that blank screen for such a long duration a normal step during installation or was a different process expected?

Debian Configuration :: Jessie Amd64 / Held Pkg And Broken Synaptic?

Jan 30, 2016

I was using Synaptic to remove unwanted sound & audio programs...it seemed to take out other files that were non-related ?

(1) Now apt-get complains about a "Held Package" and doesn't tell me the pkg name.

(2) Synaptic is broken...error..E: The value 'stable-updates' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources

E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

stable-updates isn't even in my sources list. I've purged synaptic, and re-installed but remains broken. When you close error msg synaptic disappears ? Therefore can't use synaptic at all.

(3) apt-get says many packages that were available are no longer available...like one of the main repos has disappeared ?

(4) I put the same repos that are working for my brother who is running Debian Jessie also, but didn't improve the number of missing available packages.

deb [URL] ....

deb [URL] ....

How or why things have gone so wrong from just removing unwanted sound pkgs.

To recap problems...apt-get held pkg....broken synaptic....unavailable pkgs.

Debian Multimedia :: Periodic Screen Freezes In Jessie

Apr 15, 2015

For months I've been experiencing periodic screen freezes in Debian Jessie. I've tried many ways to debug/fix it without any luck...

I'm running GNOME 3 in Debian Jessie...
Code: Select all$ gnome-shell --version
GNOME Shell 3.12.2
$ cat /etc/issue
Debian GNU/Linux 8
l

On a ThinkPad X60 with a SSD.

Code: Select all$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

My screen freezes periodically.

By freeze, I mean that the mouse can still move, but everything else behind it is frozen entirelyI can switch to a terminal with CTRL+ALT+F1, it's ... I guess... X or gnome-shell or something that's frozen? Not the whole OS thoughThese freezes last anywhere between 5 or 10 seconds and 3-5 minutesI can't predict when they will occur, but often, after a suspend/resume, they will start occuring much more frequently. Also, they often happen after I enter my password and press ENTER on the lock screen after a resume from suspend. But not exclusively -- they can happen at any other time when I'm doing pretty much anything in GNOME...

Things I've Tried...

When frozen, I've tried to CTRL+ALT+F1, login, and run gnome-shell --replace... [*[When frozen, I can successfully CTRL+ALT+F1 and run `service gdm restart`... with the obvious downside of losing everything I have open. But the screen responds immediately and I can log back in to GNOMEI tried running `Xorg -configure` to generate an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to edit, but received an error about not being able to generate configuration for multiple screens or something (I can retry and provide the exact error if this is a useful direction to try) is it the gnome-shell freezing? Is it X? Is it a problem with the X driver I'm using?

Debian Multimedia :: XFCE Screen Frozen In New Jessie

Sep 16, 2015

In trying to get openbox running in new Jessie installation, I followed an instruction in openbox.org: Help: XFCE/Openbox.

" If you want to use the Openbox root menu instead of Xfce's, you could terminate Xfdesktop by running the following:"

Code: Select allxfdesktop --quit.

That eliminated everything on the desktop except the Debian8 background image and the panel clock and made it impossible to do anything other than log out via a right click on the panel. Shutting down and rebooting just brings back the same situation. No terminal available.

Debian Multimedia :: Jessie - Intel 945M Flickering Screen

Debian Multimedia :: Upgrade System From Jessie To Stretch - Second Screen Detection

Dec 31, 2015

I recently upgrade my system from Jessie to Stretch, with no problem. A little later I upgrades Enlightenment from e17 to e20, and at some point shortly after that the second screen stopped working.

The nvidia X Server Settings correctly identifies both screens. But Enlightenment and xrandr does not see the second one at all. The second screen are on and the pointer moves correctly onto it, but no activity with left or right click. I have tried with the original xorg.conf, and generated a new one with nvidia-xconfig, but no difference. No obvious errors in any log-files either.

Debian Installation :: Upgrading One Particular Package From Jessie To Stretch

Jan 8, 2016

I have installed Package: gnumeric (1.12.18-2) in my Jessie/Mate system. It is very jittery on scrolling, and I was wondering if I should upgrade to the version (1.12.26-1) in stretch(testing), as there seem to have been a large number of bugfixes.

I have tried the following simulation command, but it gives the error message shown:

Code: Select all~# apt-get --simulate -t stretch  install gnumeric
Reading package lists... Done
E: The value 'stretch' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources

The documentation suggests that I may need to create an apt preferences file. I do not have any of the following files mentioned by the apt-get man page:

/etc/apt/preferences/etc/apt/preferences.d/etc/apt/apt.conf

What I would like to do is upgrade just the specific package jessie/gnumeric(1.12.18-2) to stretch/gnumeric(1.12.26-1). I do not want any other packages to be inadvertently upgraded to stretch. I have seen warnings that one can easily end up with a badly mixed system and I wish to avoid that! I also do not want to disturb the standard apt-get update, which I am running daily via anacron at present.

Debian Multimedia :: NVidia+Compiz+crtl+alt+F7=blank Screen [Gnome]?

But then I tried crtl+alt+F1 - which worked though the font was way too big - and then crtl+alt+F7 to get back to the Desktop but it went to a black screen and blinking cursor instead. I searched a bit and it seems this was a problem a few years back but nothing recent. FWIW, I don't have this problem with Hardy/nVidia/Compiz on another drive in this same machine. Is there a way to fix this?

Debian :: Upgrading From Jessie To Testing By Changing Sources List

May 20, 2015

I have a fresh install of jessie and I'm thinking about starting using testing instead. I tried to use the testing installer but it was so buggy I finally gave up and I now have some questions.

My sources.list currently looks like this:

Code: Select all# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8.0.0 _Jessie_ - Official amd64 NETINST Binary-1 20150425-12:50]/ jessie main

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8.0.0 _Jessie_ - Official amd64 NETINST Binary-1 20150425-12:50]/ jessie main

deb http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian/ jessie main
deb-src http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian/ jessie main

deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main

# jessie-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main
deb-src http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main

- I get that I should change jessie but to what, testing or stretch?

- Is it considered reasonably "safe" to upgrade a system by changing sources.list and then running apt-get update && apt-get upgrade?

By safe I mean something along the lines of that given that I have a fresh install of jessie is there a great chance that the upgrade will break my system?

Debian Installation :: Segmentation Fault When Upgrading From Wheezy To Jessie

May 11, 2015

A few days ago I bought a Raspberry PI B with Debian Wheezy (7.0 - I think) on it. Before installing a media centre on it I wanted to do some basic configuration/upgrade and decided to upgrade to Debian Jessie. I followed the instructions provided on [URL] .....

Before moving to Jessie I have upgraded the original Wheezy; after the upgrade the version was 7.8. Everything went well till I executed "apt-get dist-upgrade". Errors where generated. As suggested I tried the "apt-get -f install"; but it did not go smoothly either. However, so far, I am accessing the desktop and everything seems fine (although I did not do anything fancy yet). The version recorded is 8.0. Thus, should I worry about the error messages generated?

Please find the log file here: [URL] ......

Note that I put the log file on Google Drive because each time I clicked on "add file" in the "Upload Attachment" tab when editing this message I got:

Internal Server Error:

Please contact the server administrator, forum-admin@forums.debian.net and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

Is this somehow related to the change to only update the microcode on boot as reported earlier in the upgrade?

Debian Hardware :: Sound Stopped Working After Upgrading Jessie System

May 1, 2014

I recently updated my Debian jessie system (for the first time in a few months). It broke my video driver (fortunately a dpkg-reconfigure fixed that) and my wireless driver (forget how I fixed that...), and my sound. ALSA still thinks I have an output device, I've set volumes all the way up in alsamixer.

In vlc and firefox, I can't hear anything using the default audio out (which I think is pulseaudio), nor can I hear anything if I ask them to use ALSA output directly. I've tried rebooting, killing/manually starting pulseaudio, etc to no avail.

I think it was either the kernel upgrade (went from 3.10 to 3.13) or a configuration option in some sound subsystem that broke. To be clear, sound was working perfectly before the upgrade. My machine is an Ivy Bridge-era Zenbook.

Debian :: 7.8 Wheezy Amd64 - Screen Blocked Suddenly

Feb 18, 2015

Sometimes, after inactivity, the screen turns black, not allowing me to see login screen. If I press CTRL+ALT+F1 (or F2,F3,Fn) nothing happens. The computer is still responsive, as I can reboot it through key shortcuts.

I have search in almost all logs in /var/log, without any information about the cause of the error. The time I was away from computer was between +- 18:10-18:22

Here is the log of daemon.log at the time of rebooting: [URL] ....

I can see one line that seems to be an error with (but it is displayed as warning):

Code: Select allFeb 18 18:21:47 debian gnome-session[3714]: Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Recurso no disponible temporalmente) on X server :0.#012

Debian Multimedia :: I386 And Amd64 Proper Deb Packages Of UMPlayer

Apr 3, 2011

the mcr85+1 packages were built using qt 4.6.3, so will be squeeze-compatible. umplayer is a fork of the abandoned smplayer project which adds skinning, shoutcast stream, and minitube-like videos search, playback, and download capability to the program.

[url]

i did a pull and build from the svn repo, since that is newer than the 0.92 debs on the website and solves some videos issues. debianized sources included so one can build the program on any architecture that supports qt 4 4.6 and mplayer...plus it's a good idea not to trust anybody's binaries off the web, so to be really safe, rebuild the program yourself if you don't know who the heck i am. update 20 april 2011: link to svn 143 builds and sources: [url] update: 25 june 2011: new pull from svn--fixes the returning control bar problem with skins and kde 4 kwin desktop effects enabled:

[url]

squeeze users should use the mcr85 packages, the mcr110 ones need qt 4.7. sources included as usual. it looks like it would be a nice addition to the debian repo...
