I need the command line application "starttls". It used to have its own package in Lenny [url], but I can't find it in Squeeze, even when searching other packages by means of "apt-cache search".

I've been testing Squeeze to determine whether KDE4 is finally suitable for my primary machine. Everything seems to be working fine except for detection of IDE devices. My CD/DVD drive no longer automounts and the reason seems to be that no device is being created. My Lenny system detects the drive as /dev/hda, but no such device exists in Squeeze. During boot, Squeeze appears to detect the drive as /dev/sr0 (according to dmesg), but in fact that device does not exist either.I'm actually running the Lenny kernel, as I am unable to compile my Ralink wireless driver (rt2860sta) using the Squeeze kernel. Also, for inquiring minds, I use removable HDD drive bays on my systems to simplify testing.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am currently running Debian Lenny on one of my external HDDs and Debian Squeeze on the other one. I found a package I like in lenny but it seems it has not been added to squeeze (yet). The package is ksirc and i like it because it looks and feels like mIRC that I used in windows. My question is can I install the lenny version on squeeze with out it having an adverse effect? My other question is what do I put into the /etc/apt/sources.list to do this? i now see that ksirc is also available in a sid (unstable) version. Is it safe to install this one to my squeeze distro? and again what do I need to add to my sources.list to do this?
Or could I just download the deb package and install it using dpkg? New to this and just looking for the best way to get a favorite software package.
I have been using Squeeze for a while and loving it.One handy utility is Unetbootin which I have been using to create bootable usb flash drives . Suddenly , some days ago - I couldn't boot with a newly created usb drive . The post boot screen is displayed and it hangs - tried Tiny Core linux , Debian installer and Freesco . I got my hands on a second flash drive and got the same error . After a lot of attempts I installed Lenny one of my older box and did the following ; Inserted the usb drive to my squeeze box and installed the image with Unetbootin Inserted the usb drive to my lenny box and ran syslinux /dev/sda1 Then the usb drive booted fine , in fact both drives booted fine . If I type syslinux /dev/sda1 on my squeeze box then the usb drive won't boot .From what I can understand there are different versions of syslinux ;

In Squeeze 2:4.02+dfsg-3
What should I do about this - should I file a bug report ?

I was able to find it in lenny (http://packages.debian.org/en/lenny/nemesis) but I could not find it in the squeeze repositories. So if I want to install this how do I do it. Are there any other alternate programs that can be used instead of nemesis.
I need libnet0 on a squeeze installation, so I can compile nemesis, which unfortunately has not been an active project. It depends on libnet0, which is not in the squeeze repository.I can compile nemesis, but will it ok to do this the same way with the libnet0 library? Or should I manipulate the /etc/sources.list to be able to install it from the lenny repositories? (this doesn't sound right...Better get the sources? And what happens when I compile it? Can I safely have libnet0 and libnet1 on the same installation?

I have so far used reiserfs formatting both in my previous debian (sarge, etch and lenny) and opensuse (SLED10, opensuse-10.2,10.3 &11.3) and was very happy. When last month I installed debian squeeze I missed reiserfs (or did I miss noticing it?) Though Ext3 is giving me no trouble. I would love to have reiserfs. Is it now possible to change the filesystems without much trouble.

The installation finished and I was able to log in, but a significant number of packages were missing, including network-manager and network-manager-gnome, OpenOffice, and gdebi. Everything under the System | Administration menu except Login Screen was missing. There's probably more missing, too, but I am not sure how to tell.
It happened a few times but with slightly different results (e.g. I think on one of the earlier install attempts, Iceweasel didn't get installed, but it was included in the most recent attempt). I tried installing using 6.0.1's CD 1, and 6.0.0's hybrid Live image on a USB stick (in both cases, the GNOME version). I had used the same USB stick to install Squeeze successfully on another laptop last week (i.e. I successfully got a complete, working install; I made no changes to the USB stick; then tried to install using it on this new laptop, and saw this behavior).
I tried using both the graphical and text installers. At the step asking what packages you want installed (which allows you to auto-install sshd or mail server, for example), each time I made no changes, so the 3 selected default settings (the first option, Desktop Environment, and the last 2 options, laptop and... whatever the other one is, I don't remember) should all have been installed.
I didn't use the net installer, and I ran the installer offline because both laptops require non-free firmware and I couldn't figure out last week how to get the installer to find that firmware (on another USB stick). So once I got to the GNOME desktop the most recent time, I copied the WiFi chip's firmware .deb onto the laptop and did a 'dpkg -i', then did the same thing to get network-manager-gnome and its dependencies installed; and once I connected to our network I started an 'apt-get install gnome' to try to get the entire desktop environment installed (that also installed the programs that show up under System | Administration).
Is there anything important I might still be missing? Is there a list of installed-by-default packages that I could compare against say a 'dpkg -l'? Does this sound like some sort of known issue?
I try to setup OpenLDAP on Debian Squeeze.But it seems the documentation I found is differed than the installation.
Normally I would expect /etc/ldap/slapd.conf as also mentioned at url.However this file does not exists and I got the feeling Debian changes a lot with the default (bit poor if you asked me).Seems they created a LDAP database and put the config in there, correct me if I am wrong?A folder /etc/ldap/slapd.d is created with some config inside. And also a /etc/ldap/ldap.conf does exist.
Is there any documentation on this, and what if I would like to have a flat config in /etc/ldap/slapd.conf?
About a month ago I upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze and everything seemed fineBut sometime between then and now I lost the maximize and close buttons (I still have the minimize)This is only a minor annoyance for me but a major one for my wife.I searched the web and some other forums but have found no help.

But I have an issue when i want to install sarg (sarg-report), i cannot find the package thru aptitude/apt-get, however it was present in lenny distribution. Now I've seen that squeeze is finally released, so I decided to make a fresh install of squeeze, as I made some mistakes while installing lenny, like downloading kde meta-package (full of useless programs), small root partition etc...Now, I want to install Squeeze with KDE, but not the meta-package, just the required programs in order to run the GUI, and then I want to select which programs to install by myself... View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter going from Debian Lenny to squeeze, everything was going OK, apart from 8 broken packages of which I was easily able to fix 7 of the packages. The last one is x-org core, which comes up with the error message /var/cache/apt/archives/udev_150-2_i386.deb returned an error. From all my research it indicates that an update from kernel 2.6.26-2-686 to a later version is required due to 150 udev requiring the support of the CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED. My next question is where to start, do I need to add a linux-image repository in sources.list and then use the command-line or am I headed in the wrong direction.

I am using xfce in squeeze and I like xfce4-governor-plugin. But this package is missing in debian, pls can you add this plugin to squeeze repository. xfce4-governor-plugin_0.1.0 works in squezze very well.

Problem is that in my KDE setup several programs don't work, namely System Load Viewer plasmoid, plasmoid with temperature info and update-notifier-kde. System Load Viewer always shows 0% RAM and swap usage, as well as no processors, temperature sensors plasmoid shows no sensors available even after I installed lm-sensors and run sensors-detect, update-notifier-kde doesn't show any notifications even if I run aptitude update manualy. I might be mistaken but it seems to me that these three programs are not working because of some common reason, most likely some policy package either missing or misconfigured, but I can't figure out what is it.

I gues I have to add a source address to my sources.list file. All the manuals I've found so far for debian and vhcs is for debian etch or earlier and those sources they given arent working for me.
