Debian :: Broken Package In Squeeze - Xorg Core

Feb 7, 2010

After going from Debian Lenny to squeeze, everything was going OK, apart from 8 broken packages of which I was easily able to fix 7 of the packages. The last one is x-org core, which comes up with the error message /var/cache/apt/archives/udev_150-2_i386.deb returned an error. From all my research it indicates that an update from kernel 2.6.26-2-686 to a later version is required due to 150 udev requiring the support of the CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED. My next question is where to start, do I need to add a linux-image repository in sources.list and then use the command-line or am I headed in the wrong direction.

Debian Multimedia :: Wheezy Warning: Keep Xserver-xorg-core 2:1.10.2-1?

Jun 19, 2011

I experienced this problem on Friday but didn't have time to write a warning.A couple of days ago, xserver-xorg-core 2:1.10.2-1+b1 reached Testing before a corresponding dependency (recommendation), thus breaking the hardware acceleration. The issue is (better) described here (1) by a developer.A possible solution is to keep (2) the previous version (2:1.10.2-1) or, if you already installed the faulty one, to grab the former version from Debian Snapshots (3) and downgrade the package.Because the error was a simple path change, one could also keep the new version of xserver-xorg-core and link the DRI Mesa modules to the directories that are inspected now (as described here [4]).The issue has already been addressed (5) and a new version should appear in Testing shortly.[URL]

Ubuntu :: Package Manager Says Have A Broken Package And Wants To 'upgrade' To The Older Broken One?

Sep 1, 2011

I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. How can I fix this without breaking my VPN SW again?

I start my box from startx but after getting these updates, x tries to start, I see a mouse and a screen for a second and then it drops out again. I'm running the latest nvidia drivers from nvidia and have tried reinstalling them and they install fine, but no go.

Only thing I can find in xorg.log is:
(II) Power Button: Close
(II) UnloadModule: "evdev"

My xorg.conf file is void of anything related to input devices and has been working a treat. So it would seem one of these updates has screwed evdev. I've tried reverting back to earlier versions, but I get the same issues. I was running squeeze with kernel 2.6.32-4-amd64 when all this happened. It was running like a trooper. I've now tried 2.6.32-5-amd64 but still no go.

Debian :: No More Terminal Beeps In Xorg After Squeeze Upgrade?

Mar 23, 2010

I recently upgraded from lenny to squeeze and have subsequently lost system beeps in X. What I don't understand is, system beeping works properly in console, such as when I backspace an empty line or in tab completion, but in X terminals it does not. While in xterm I can do 'xkbbell' and get a bell / beep, but get no bell if I do 'tput bel' or 'echo -e 'a' ' or ^G.

pcspkr is loaded.
the 'pc speaker' volume is maxed and unmuted.
xset has bell volume at 100.

There was a bug in xorg that seemed to describe this problem really well a month or three ago [URL], but it appears to have been fixed as of version 1.7.0 (vs the 1.7.5 on my machine). There's been some talk recently of eliminating/disabling pc speaker beeps by default, but I'm not sure what came of it? Anyway, this issue is for me as irritating as it is minor, and failing a solution I'd at least like to know why.

EDIT: Can someone running Squeeze/2.6.32-3-686 and pcspkr loaded try and do a ctrl+g in a x terminal and tell me if you get beep

Software :: Fglrx & Debian Squeeze Not Letting Xorg Start?

Feb 16, 2010

A few days ago I ditched the user friendly world of Ubuntu and installed Debian Squeeze amd64 (testing) over it. I did not install the suggested Gnome 'X desktop' in favour of booting to the terminal and starting X once logged in as a user.

Everything was fine except for the fact Xvesa was used instead of Xorg as the system did not have the required Fglrx driver. I'm using an Acer ASPIRE 5536 with an ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics stuffed in it, which certainly beats intel GMA.

Unfortunately the drivers for it are proprietary.

On Ubuntu this was automatically detected and I was asked if I wanted to sell my soul and enable the restricted drivers. On debian however I have to download a shell-script of the ATI website to install the fglrx module.

Following this guide I downloaded the correct file (Under motherboard/something) and ran it as root.

I couldn't run it with any --buildpky Debian/XXX option, they all failed.

Code:
==================================================
ATI Technologies Linux Driver Installer/Packager
==================================================
Generating package: Debian/testing
cp: cannot stat `/root/fglrx-install.tCX8nC/x710_64a/*': No such file or directory

Debian :: Squeeze Broken After Updates Applied

Aug 25, 2010

I am running Squeeze AMD64 and install updates every couple of days. I installed the latest batch yesterday and got a "restart system" message, so rebooted. The usual messages scrolled past for a while, then the screen went blank, and that was it. I tried a couple of times with same result. I booted into maintenance mode to try to find the cause of the problem. Looking at /var/log/messages there is some strange activity going on. Unfortunately I can't easily paste the relevant portion of the file into this posting as the network isn't working (I am posting this from a laptop), but roughly what I am seeing is this:

PGD <some stuff>
CPU 0
Modules linked in: <long list of modules>
Pid, 1841, comm: Xorg Not Tainted <some stuff>
<about 20 lines of assorted values>
--[end trace <long hex number>]

and this repeats several times (presumably stopping when I hit the reset button). Sometimes it's CPU 0 and sometimes CPU 1, it mostly involves Xorg in Pid line, and apart from the first instance mostly reports Xorg Tainted.

I could just reinstall but would rather repair as it would be both quicker and more instructive.

Debian Configuration :: How To Remove Package That Ties With Core Ones

Aug 7, 2011

I have this package dependency question for a while. I have brand new Squeeze system. I selected desktop during installation. Gnome is default system but I turned off gdm3 and uses fluxbox as window manager. I understand if two packages are tied together funtionally so that removal of either package terminates one feature. Above cases, many small packages only depends on the core packages. The core packages work fine without games, other programs.

There are so many programs that I want to remove in the system. For examples, ekiga is a VoIP program that I never use it. When I tried to remove it using apt-get or aptitude, it suggests entire gnome packages will be removed also, which is illogical. The only solution I found is I need to manually remove the package files. I haven't tried it yet.

Debian :: Debian Synaptic Package Manager Error: Xserver-xorg Stripped?

Feb 10, 2011

I have used Debian Linux for two years, most recently the seventh or so iteration of Version 5. I use the Gnome desktop and the Synaptic Package Manager, not the Update Manager, for updates because it's easier to build a log with the former.In my most recent update, Synaptic stripped out all the xserver-xorg files47 in all. I thought it peculiar but did not know enough to interfere. When I rebooted, the system told me I must install xserver or correct GDM configuration and restart.

Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attached? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.

Debian Configuration :: DHCP Server In Squeeze Appears Broken?

Dec 3, 2010

Alright, I edited "/etc/default/isc-dhcp-server" and set "eth0" as the only thing listed for interfaces. I also have the code below in "/etc/dhcp/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf" and I even copied it to "/etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf" for good measure, and I can't get the DHCP server to start. As an intermediate to advanced user, I am under the high assumption that it is broken since everything in the docs has been set. I have googled for two days and cannot find a fix, so before I report it as a broken package, would somebody with more experience with the package chime in?

Configuration file:
subnet 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
option domain-name-servers 10.0.0.254;
option broadcast-address 10.0.0.255;

[Code].....

I hid my wireless setup because it contains my WiFi network info including key. This box is routing, doing DNS resolution, and firewalling just fine. I just cannot get the friggin' DHCP server to start no matter what I try.

Oh, and is it safe to delete "/etc/dhcp" or "/etc/dhcp3"? They appear to be duplicates of each other...

Debian :: Using A Lenny Package In Squeeze?

Jul 5, 2010

I am currently running Debian Lenny on one of my external HDDs and Debian Squeeze on the other one. I found a package I like in lenny but it seems it has not been added to squeeze (yet). The package is ksirc and i like it because it looks and feels like mIRC that I used in windows. My question is can I install the lenny version on squeeze with out it having an adverse effect? My other question is what do I put into the /etc/apt/sources.list to do this? i now see that ksirc is also available in a sid (unstable) version. Is it safe to install this one to my squeeze distro? and again what do I need to add to my sources.list to do this?

Or could I just download the deb package and install it using dpkg? New to this and just looking for the best way to get a favorite software package.

Debian :: Bug In Squeeze Package Syslinux?

Aug 29, 2010

I have been using Squeeze for a while and loving it.One handy utility is Unetbootin which I have been using to create bootable usb flash drives . Suddenly , some days ago - I couldn't boot with a newly created usb drive . The post boot screen is displayed and it hangs - tried Tiny Core linux , Debian installer and Freesco . I got my hands on a second flash drive and got the same error . After a lot of attempts I installed Lenny one of my older box and did the following ; Inserted the usb drive to my squeeze box and installed the image with Unetbootin Inserted the usb drive to my lenny box and ran syslinux /dev/sda1 Then the usb drive booted fine , in fact both drives booted fine . If I type syslinux /dev/sda1 on my squeeze box then the usb drive won't boot .From what I can understand there are different versions of syslinux ;

In Lenny 2:3.71+dfsg-5
In Squeeze 2:4.02+dfsg-3

What should I do about this - should I file a bug report ?

Ubuntu :: Update Of Libc And Xorg Core Kills Ati Hardware Driver

May 26, 2010

I got the weekly updates; libc files and an xorg core file from memory. Thinking now the xorg core possibly rewrote my xorg.conf!seems to have killed the restricted ATI driver. I can boot from kernel 2.6.24.26 but 27, the one I did the updates, after the Ubuntu progress bar I get a black screen. Booting from 26 I get the low resolution graphics guff and need to set it manually each time. Go to Sys->Admin->Hardware Drivers, and sure enough, the ATI driver is 'Not in Use'. Switch it on, try booting into 27, black screen.

Phew, back to 26, change to manual config, get back in, see ATI driver is off again, leave it off and leave manual graphics resolution and config, boot back into 27, everything is stretched and out of proportion!! But I can at least get in. Switch ATI driver on in there, reboot into 27, black screen.This is pretty urgent as my wife is end of semester uni stuff and needs this machine. Worse, so am I and have even more on the plate (but at least have a computer!),
