Debian :: Not Shutting Down Gracefully?

Aug 21, 2011

So, I installed debian and everything is nice, only one minor problem I haven't been able to solve is I think when I shutdown the computer running applications are being killled instead of terminated gracefully (if I open iceweasel, open a few tabs, close it and open it again only the homepage is opened, but if I open iceweasel, shutdown the computer, boot it and run iceweasel all the tabs are opened again, the same happens if iceweasel crashes).

I'm using debian version 6.0.2.1, a default install and no major configuration changes was done, I'm shutting down via gnome control-alt-del - shutdown.

Any help?

Debian :: What To Do After Improper Shutting Down?

Nov 6, 2010

About a year ago, I decided to remove the battery of my laptop when no mobility were required and the machine could use A/C, in order to --supposedly-- extend the battery's life. The system has suffered a couple of improper shutting downs within this year and, despite no important information was lost and I have not noticed a single problem, I don't know what to do after one. Yesterday, while I was testing some hard disk checking tools, I noticed that there was a damaged sector on the disk. Is it a result of these improper shutting downs? Should I force a file system check after one? Does the system performs a file system check when the error is critical? Should I check the lost+found directory after an improper shutting down --it's empty, by the way? What's the recommended way to proceed after an improper shutting down?

Programming :: Gracefully Exit A Background Process?

Jun 7, 2011

I am using a program that reads in data from a serial port and then sends that data out over a TCP connection. The problem I'm having is that the only way I know to exit the program is to do a 'kill PID', but doing this means the program doesn't go through the motions of closing the TCP connection properly so I have to wait some random period of time for the port to free itself or else when I try to start it back up it tells me that it can't bind to the specified port. The general structure of the program is as follows

Code:
int main(){
// initialize some stuff

Debian :: System Hang When Shutting Down Printer?

Jul 8, 2011

I have a strange problem on my system. When I turn off printer, system hang. Gdm/X exit and I can see a terminal screen with a lot of info (but I can not capture it, except taking a photo). I must press reset button. It's not all times, but at least 50% I shutdown printer. I was looking logs and I can not see any relevant. Maybe this (copy some sections of /var/log/messages, remove other not revelant):

Jul  7 19:43:34 dcr64 kernel: [341172.052076] usb 1-8: new high speed USB device number 7 using ehci_hcd
Jul  7 19:43:34 dcr64 kernel: [341172.185255] usb 1-8: New USB device found, idVendor=03f0, idProduct=4412
Jul  7 19:43:34 dcr64 kernel: [341172.185260] usb 1-8: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3

[Code]...

Sometimes I turn on printer to get a photocopy and turn off later, and system hand, so, it's not necesary to print or scan to get this error.

Debian Hardware :: Laptop Shutting Down (unrelated To CPU Temperature)

Mar 27, 2015

My laptop is frequently shutting down while using Google Earth 7.1.2.2041-r0. It uses 100% CPU, but only on one CPU core, and the problem happens at random.

I don't believe it is related to the CPU temperature, because I created a script that saves the current temperature every two seconds, so when the system shuts down I can see the last, and the highest I got from all the times was 62 °C, while the average from all the times it shut down was 57 °C from /sys/devices/platform/coretemp.0/hwmon/hwmon1/temp*_input and 51 °C from /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp and /sys/devices/virtual/hwmon/hwmon0/temp1_input. From my research, I understand that coretemp-0 is the temperature of the CPU itself, while the others (acpitz-virtual-0) are from underneath the base of the CPU.

The files under /sys and the command `sensors' tell me that only 80° would trigger a shutdown. I bought this laptop in 2013, and I have never seen it go beyond 6-°C:

Code: Select allsensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:        +41.0°C  (crit = +104.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0:       +48.0°C  (high = +80.0°C, crit = +90.0°C)
Core 2:       +47.0°C  (high = +80.0°C, crit = +90.0°C)

I have done a simple stress test by running `cat /dev/zero >/dev/null' on 8 terminals, together with `glxgears' and `supertuxkart' for half an hour, and my system did not shutdown, neither the temperature went beyond 6-°C. The HD temperature lives around 42 °C, according to `sudo smartctl -l scttemp /dev/sda'.

The output from `inxi -F':

Code: Select allSystem:    Host: localhost Kernel: 3.15.10-zen-686-pae i686 (32 bit) Desktop: Xfce 4.10.2
           Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 7.6
Machine:   System: Evolute (portable) product: SFX-65
Mobo: Evolute model: SFX-65 Bios: American Megatrends v: 1.07.007 Test Only date: 04/12/2011
CPU:       Dual core Intel Core i3 M 370 (-HT-MCP-) cache: 3072 KB
           clock speeds: max: 2394 MHz 1: 2394 MHz 2: 1862 MHz 3: 1729 MHz 4: 1995 MHz

Fedora Hardware :: Shutdown System Gracefully Before Power Runs Out

May 1, 2010

I have machine which I am using a server for all my office activities. We have fedora (11.0) installed in that system. When even power goes out system is getting shut-down abruptly. We have UPS for this system and some times UPS also runs out of power. Do we have any software, which monitors battery power and shutdown the system gracefully, when system knows that power is running out. I am using desktop machine, not a laptop. So I may some hardware like battery which runs fot sometime, even though there is no power. Then there will software which monitors and shut down the system gracfully.

General :: Shutting Down PC Without Killing SSH Sessions?

Aug 10, 2010

I have some heavy, long processes running on remote Linux machines. I use my laptop to SSH to these machine and run the processes from my couch.

BUT, when I want to shutdown my laptop, I am in trouble since the remote processes are killed.

I did my research and found out that "screen" is a great solution for me, it is! (As long as I don't SHUTDOWN my laptop). Isn't there a way to "persist" the "screen" sessions so I can shut it down and then re-attach to a session?

Prior to this version of ubuntu my laptop (an old P4 gateway) shut down just fine. It acted fine in windows xp, and ubuntu 9.04, 9.10, and 10.04. Starting with my first shutdown after upgrading to maverick (as opposed to a fresh install, which is what I've done for every time I went to the new version before this), it just reboots the computer instead of shutting down.I've tried clicking the icon in the corner, I've tried pushing the power button and clicking shutdown on that screen, I've even tried shutting down from the command prompt, but each of these just reboots the computer.
