View 2 RepliesMy laptop's built-in LCD turns itself off early in bootup regardless of the OS/distro or how long it's been running -- and sure enough, 14's live CD turns off its external LCD as well. Kinda hard to install when I can't see what I'm doing, you know? So, I don't suppose anybody knows how I could keep the live CD and/or initial install from turning the external off, so I can get the chance to change the appropriate setting? I've searched the forums, but haven't seen any way to circumvent it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running named as a caching name server (package bind-9.7.3-1.fc14.x86_64 with config files exactly as supplied), and sometimes it does not shut down cleanly when I shut down the machine.The script /etc/ init.d/named tries to issue a "stop" command with rndc and that seems to fail most of the time; then it next uses the function killproc (defined in /etc/init.d/functions) which fails sometimes.I've hacked the named service script for now so that error messages are not hidden, but there is nothing reported.

And i have to hard poweroff the system... (GRRRR)If i go on the console I can only see the system terminating services and saying "halting system" and then hangs...

I have a problem with my F13 and wired connections on my Acer TravelMate 2410. When I connect the inet cable it doesn't show it as connected. When I type ifconfig, it shows everything as it should. When I tried to bring up eth0 with ifup eth0, it said that the device is not managed by NetworkManager. I tried to restart nm with service network restart, but it gave this error:

Installed on my notebook ASUS X59SL Fedora 13. Once logged in, 10-15 minutes in the right half of the monitor changes color from blue to green with small ripples. That same thing happened on my Fedora 12 on kernel versions above 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.i686.PAE. Needless to Fedora 13 work under this kernel.

I got fedora 12 like 2 weeks ago. I am newb in using linux. I got enough of the problems windows 7 has and thought to change on something good and free . It seems OK but i want to try play some online games on fedora. Seemed it did not have video card drivers installed and tried to install them. Once i installed some kind of video drivers using a yum command i found on web. But i think something was wrong because when i tried the first game installed with wine it worked as if i didn't have video card . Even yahoo messenger works very bad as if i won't have video drivers. I remember at the middle of that installation it shown kind of error like it did not find something.i don't remember exactly what it shown because immediately after that it continued to install video card drivers. But after i tried that game it still seemed something wrong happened. So....how can i see what video drivers i have installed ? Do i need to uninstall them before trying again? I got a CD with drivers when i got my notebook do you think those will work if i install them using wine ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedFor reasons I can't even begin to figure out, the number pad does NOT work.i can get the num lock light to come on, but pressing the keys there produces no love at all. Right before I installed F10, my F8 x64 had been working flawlessly for a VERY long time and I have been able to verify that the keypad still functions both with the M$ Windoze Vi$ta virus and a live Knoppix CD.Since this is the first time I have had this issue, I don't even know where to look to consider solving this.
I did try the System->Preferences->Hardware->Keyboard and all of the HP layouts listed there, but I still can't get anything more than the Num Lock light to come on and go out.

The kernel-PAE-2.6.30.5-43 upgrade will not boot on my Dell 1545 notebook. The initialization stops and the systems freezes right at the point that the login prompt should appear. I do not have invidia drivers. I have Intel video drivers. Also there is a loud 'pop' in the sound system early in the initialization sequence. For the time being, I have removed the 2.6.30.5-43 upgrade via yum.

When I boot from the CD, it reboots at the point where plymouth should exit and X should start. There are no obvious error messages from the console; it just reboots. This notebook has been generally reliable and runs 64-bit Ubuntu without any problems. I am planning to test the CD in another host (although the media check did not fail) and at least try the 32-bit version (even though I know it can't address of the RAM). As experiences with Linux go, it feels a little early to hit a brick wall so early in the process.

I've just installed F12 64bit on my notebook. Everything works great. Only problem I'm having at the mo is my WLAN is slow at DNS resolution. On wired it works fine. I know it's not my access point as it is part if my router and I've rebooted it a few times. My other wireless notebook (Windows 7, Intel 3945ABG) doesn't have the same issue, and this notebook didn't when on Windows 7. I'm using OpenDNS as my forwarders.When I open a URL in Firefox (3.5.5) it opens the site immediately on wired. On wireless it will sit for 3-4 seconds before opening the site saying looking up .................. Once on the site browsing behaves normally.Anyone else having similar issues?

I can still access Internet through Ethernet using a LAN cable but the network monitor doesn't show list of Wireless networks which my room mate's windows 7 machine easily detects.

I have no expertise with this kind of problem. The keyboard used to work on Ubuntu 9.04. I am not positive, but I think it was working on Fedora Gnome 13. It does not work on F-14 LXDE spin, and F-15 LXDE spin. I don't remember either the last time I have disassembled the notebook (damaged connector?)
How do I troubleshoot the problem?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAbout a year ago, I decided to remove the battery of my laptop when no mobility were required and the machine could use A/C, in order to --supposedly-- extend the battery's life.The system has suffered a couple of improper shutting downs within this year and, despite no important information was lost and I have not noticed a single problem, I don't know what to do after one. Yesterday, while I was testing some hard disk checking tools, I noticed that there was a damaged sector on the disk. Is it a result of these improper shutting downs? Should I force a file system check after one? Does the system performs a file system check when the error is critical? Should I check the lost+found directory after an improper shutting down --it's empty, by the way?What's the recommended way to proceed after an improper shutting down?
View 7 Replies View RelatedSo, I installed debian and everything is nice, only one minor problem I haven't been able to solve is I think when I shutdown the computer running applications are being killled instead of terminated gracefully (if I open iceweasel, open a few tabs, close it and open it again only the homepage is opened, but if I open iceweasel, shutdown the computer, boot it and run iceweasel all the tabs are opened again, the same happens if iceweasel crashes).
I'm using debian version 6.0.2.1, a default install and no major configuration changes was done, I'm shutting down via gnome control-alt-del - shutdown.

i glad i switched, but still have lots to learn. Any who, currently i am working on a server for some residents at my current job. I have DNS and everything setup right and it is working. Samba on the other hand is configured right but it keeps shutting down after about a minute. When i run this command:
chksmb status
it says "Dead". Ill restart the service(rcsmb start), and keep checking the status, and after about a minute it shuts down again. I have done a restart, double checked my configurations and still cant find why this is happening. (config file somewhere?)
I'm trying to set up my pc to power off at 00:30 everynight. I'm using webmin's Scheduled Cron Jobs tool. I've tried (running as root):
halt
shutdown -h now
and neither have powered off the pc using webmin. Am I missing something?
I have a laptop here with win 7 and decided to dual boot with ubuntu just for fun. Win 7 starts up, works, and shutdown/restarts fine. Ubuntu starts up, works great, but freezes at the splash screen showing "Ubuntu" with the bar scrolling when logging off to restart. Please help. I dont think holding down the power button to turn it off is too good. i searched google but found nothing =/

I am using Ubuntu 10.04. It is installed in windows xp. Recently I am facing a problem. After starting the computer and boot into Ubuntu, it works fine but after sometime, at about after an hour it just automatically shut down. I don't know why. My xp is doing fine but the problem in only Ubuntu.
