Ubuntu :: Computer Saves Itself Before Shutting Down?
Feb 9, 2010
My computer saves it's state when shutting down. So when I boot back up, all the applications I had running boot again. I HATE THAT. When I shut it down, I want everything GONE on next boot up. How do I fix this?
Randomly; my computer will freeze up. I can move the mouse but I cannot click on anything. This has happened at least 20 times today. Occasionally my computer will totally just shut down. My computer has been almost completely rendered Useless. I do not know what to do or even where to begin. The sooner we solve this problem the better. I do college online... so this has a major impact on me and my work and progress as a student.
i am using ubuntu 9.04 jaunty. i want to save the .deb files of the applications i have installed. now the synaptic package manager saves the .deb files to /var/cache/apt/archives . but where does the add/remove saves the the .deb files?
Once I've used the 32-flash plugin on Ubuntu 64-bit, it was buggy but it saved all the movies (from ..... and other websites) to the /tmp folder which was great.
Now I've installed the native 64-bit flash and I have a no idea where it saves the movies - do you know ?
I have one server that has Asterisk running. On front of that, I use DD-WRT router as gateway. As I have checked the log files, I saw that there is a specific IP Address that is continuously accessing the application and trying to authenticate to SIP with a series of extensions. This is like DoS attack for SIP. What I did was to block/drop the IP in DD-WRT using the iptables. I can see from the /proc/net/ip_conntrack that it is being "UNREPLIED". But my concern is that does it still uses a lot of bandwidth even though it is already being blocked?
I know how to take a screenshot on my Ubuntu, but I want to take many screenshots within a limited time (taking screenshots of a single execution of a program which I can not pause). Is there a program that takes the "PrtScr" keyboard key in charge and just stores every screenshot without asking? The standard Ubuntu tool pops up a dialog to ask where I want to save the file, I would like a tool that doesn't ask and just saves on the Desktop or wherever as 00001.png 00002.png etc.
after update f12 to f13 geany stopped to work correctly on remote storage (sftp). Geany opens file correctly, but when I try to save, it saves empty file. I tried "notepad" and "gedit", they work good on f13. Geany on f12 worked correctly too.
Is there a graphical front end for xrandr that also allows you to save your setup so that it automatically sets up the X configuration at boot time thereby simplifying this process. For example, at the moment if i want to use an external monitor on my laptop i have to manually set it up after booting as it defaults to the laptop resolution which is not a big deal but would still be nice to have this happen automatically. I tried putting a script into rc.local to do this but didnt work.I have tried programs such as lxrandr, grandr, arandr which are all good but dont allow you to save your choices so that they are automatically applied at the next boot of the X system.
It's a few days now that I notice everytime I save a page in Firefox, only the .html file is saves, and firefox does not make a folder associated with the page in which it saves the images, etc..Could this be because I installed TOR and the TORBUTTON for firefox?I have, however disabled the TORBUTTON addon from Firefox, and restarted the browserbut the problem persists.
I have dual boot and every time I turn on my systen, the system asks for " F1: Save changes" and after clicking on "F1" button it saves the changes and then boots.
I just came back from a meeting with someone wo wants this functionality:When he saves a file on *his* machine, it will automatically get copied onto a server (this is on an office LAN). This is so if there's a virus attack on his machine, he will have an uninfected backup copy. To make matters worse, the client machines will be WINDOZE. Apparently he's seen this kind of functionality at an office somewhere (he was saying something about "Microsoft" , but my brain has erased that part of the conversation ), and now wants it for himself.
I was thinking about Samba obviously, but the tricky part is doing the copying when the user *saves* a file. This will require hooks into the OS to see when a file is being saved.*If* I manage to persuade him to switch his client machines to Linux (which would be the ideal choice and make life far easier), how would it be done? I'd have to use the File Alteration MOnitor in the kernel, right?Would it be possible to write the copying code in a shell script?
I've installed Edubuntu 11.04 on an Intel Classmate PC but it is shutting down by itself for no apparent reason. Can I find a log file anywhere that might give me a clue what is causing it?
I have a laptop here with win 7 and decided to dual boot with ubuntu just for fun. Win 7 starts up, works, and shutdown/restarts fine. Ubuntu starts up, works great, but freezes at the splash screen showing "Ubuntu" with the bar scrolling when logging off to restart. Please help. I dont think holding down the power button to turn it off is too good. i searched google but found nothing =/
Edit: Shutting off works fine now... its just the restarting problem
I am using Ubuntu 10.04. It is installed in windows xp. Recently I am facing a problem. After starting the computer and boot into Ubuntu, it works fine but after sometime, at about after an hour it just automatically shut down. I don't know why. My xp is doing fine but the problem in only Ubuntu.

I installed Kubuntu 10.4 (which runs great) a couple days ago but when I shut down it goes to the Kubutu shutdown screen and freezes. I still need to run updates which may fix the issue if not any suggestions.
What is the best way to disable start up sounds? I hate being in a quiet place and having the start up sound go off on my computer. I've tried muting before shutting down and that works 40% of the time when i start up again. I do dual boot os, so will changing something in Ubuntu mess with mint or vice versa?
i have a pc running ubuntu 9.10 as cccam server and it works 100% when i run a program (teamviewer) it works like a dream BUT when my system goes in to screen saver mode teamviewer still works BUT when screensaver mode finishes teamviwer is stopped also. who do a make shaw that teamviewer never shuts down?
is it a case on nerer letting screen save end and if so how do i do that?
I recently had an OS system crash..WIndows XP. Purchased a new hard drive and installed Ubuntu 10.04. Everything installed as expected, however my CPU fan seems to be louder than usual. I did clean the fan and heat sink, but still running very loudly or fast I guess you could say. Also sometimes the PC shuts down when I try to open FireFox. Any ideas on what could be happening. This is an older machine using an Intel Celeron processor. Not sure of the speed, but I could look at the bios if that is needed.
i cant log out of my user account without shutting down the computer, and no one else can either. computer can't be turned off unless i, (administrator)have logged out, this can't be a default setting surely.
Prior to this version of ubuntu my laptop (an old P4 gateway) shut down just fine. It acted fine in windows xp, and ubuntu 9.04, 9.10, and 10.04. Starting with my first shutdown after upgrading to maverick (as opposed to a fresh install, which is what I've done for every time I went to the new version before this), it just reboots the computer instead of shutting down.I've tried clicking the icon in the corner, I've tried pushing the power button and clicking shutdown on that screen, I've even tried shutting down from the command prompt, but each of these just reboots the computer.
10.10 notice that when I shut down either Rhythmbox or Banshee the music keeps on playing. There are no icons on the top or bottom panels that I could right click and quit. At the moment I go System, Admin, System Monitor and kill the process - but this is surely not the way to shut down these apps. The Close box in these apps are not closing down the app.
so I've scoured the web and I can't seem to find anyone else having this issue. The issue:
Whenever my box is heavily using the internet, it seems to just wimp out. It shuts off and reboots.
When it's happened:I first deduced the connection to the network connection when I was trying to set up the system. When I tried an upgrade after the first time I installed the system, it crashed, leaving me with broken packages and all kinds of mess. So I decided to start over, and since I then had the network set up, I used the install latest version feature in the installer. If failed again. I battled issue this a couple of times before I opted to do updates in chunks instead of all at once. Success. Then I tried to download an entire website. You see, I had bought the computer to use as a test server for work. I ran wget, I believe. After a lot of recursive downloading, it decided to take another unauthorized break.
Now, I've got a minecraft server running too. It's been working pretty nicely, until lately. I've got a cron job set up to backup the server files with dropbox. Bad, bad, bad. The computer started acting up again, shutting off and rebooting. I figured it was having a hard time uploading to dropbox while simultaneously serving up the game. I moved the cron job from hourly to daily, and haven't had issues all day. Great. Until late tonight. It did it again while we were playing. It's relentless. So I went through the whole process of assessing damage. Luckily no damage. Then I went ahead and ran the dropbox script that didn't get to run while I was performing diagnostics.
I am encountering a Problem with the TeamSpeak server that I host on my Ubuntu Machine. The Problem I'm having is that when I restart the Computer before Stopping the Service from the Terminal, The Server would encounter an error the next time it is started.
I would like to know if there is a File somewhere that is run when the User want to Reboot or Shutdown the PC, or if I can write a script that runs before Shutting down.
So at work I usually forget to shut down my computer at the end of the day 5:30 and they switch the breaker off at 6pm which cant be good way to shut down a computer. So i was doing some googling and this is what i come up with.
this is the example i found online Code: #crontab -e -u root Code: 0 20 * * * /sbin/shutdown -h now since the above turns it down at 8pm i need to edit it to 5 30pm
Code: 0 17:30 * * * /sbin/shutdown -h now would this be correct?
