Debian Multimedia :: Shutting Down From Terminal As Opposed To KMenu?

Jun 16, 2010

I tried shutting down from terminal as opposed to KMenu and the shutdown hung without completing. I did a 'hard' shutdown mechanically. The command I used was: # shutdown -a  -t  5secs now

Is there a way to correct this?

Desktop Running Gear
i-386 Processor
2.6GHz/512MB RAM/160GB HDD
HS Cable-Modem: (Motorola SURFBoard SB5101) direct to ISP (no router)

Debian Multimedia :: Xcompmgr 'master' - Rounded Window Borders Don't Draw And Redraw Properly When Using The Terminal (gnome-terminal And The LXDE And Xfce Ones)

Aug 26, 2011

I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.

Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.

Debian :: What To Do After Improper Shutting Down?

Nov 6, 2010

About a year ago, I decided to remove the battery of my laptop when no mobility were required and the machine could use A/C, in order to --supposedly-- extend the battery's life. The system has suffered a couple of improper shutting downs within this year and, despite no important information was lost and I have not noticed a single problem, I don't know what to do after one. Yesterday, while I was testing some hard disk checking tools, I noticed that there was a damaged sector on the disk. Is it a result of these improper shutting downs? Should I force a file system check after one? Does the system performs a file system check when the error is critical? Should I check the lost+found directory after an improper shutting down --it's empty, by the way? What's the recommended way to proceed after an improper shutting down?

Debian :: Not Shutting Down Gracefully?

Aug 21, 2011

So, I installed debian and everything is nice, only one minor problem I haven't been able to solve is I think when I shutdown the computer running applications are being killled instead of terminated gracefully (if I open iceweasel, open a few tabs, close it and open it again only the homepage is opened, but if I open iceweasel, shutdown the computer, boot it and run iceweasel all the tabs are opened again, the same happens if iceweasel crashes).

I'm using debian version 6.0.2.1, a default install and no major configuration changes was done, I'm shutting down via gnome control-alt-del - shutdown.

Any help?

Debian :: System Hang When Shutting Down Printer?

Jul 8, 2011

I have a strange problem on my system. When I turn off printer, system hang. Gdm/X exit and I can see a terminal screen with a lot of info (but I can not capture it, except taking a photo). I must press reset button. It's not all times, but at least 50% I shutdown printer. I was looking logs and I can not see any relevant. Maybe this (copy some sections of /var/log/messages, remove other not revelant):

Sometimes I turn on printer to get a photocopy and turn off later, and system hand, so, it's not necesary to print or scan to get this error.

Debian Multimedia :: Only Terminal After Kde Install

May 29, 2011

Iv installed debian 6.0.1 and tried to install the kde desktop. it installed ok but when i boot up now i just get a terminal. Iv tried starting x but apparently its already running which kinda makes sence since the terminal IS a bit gui (you can use the mouse to select some menu buttons at the top) Iv made sure xorg and kdm and all that jass in installed and up to date but nothing seems to work.

I saw in an ubuntu forum that someone with the same problem solved it by renaming their home folder then making a new one with "the correct permissions" however i have no idea hgow to do that from the terminal and alot fot eh commands they talked about dont seem to work which i was surprised by since i thought it was all bash? (ie startx, service, sudo are all invalid commands for me apparently)

Debian Hardware :: Laptop Shutting Down (unrelated To CPU Temperature)

Mar 27, 2015

My laptop is frequently shutting down while using Google Earth 7.1.2.2041-r0. It uses 100% CPU, but only on one CPU core, and the problem happens at random.

I don't believe it is related to the CPU temperature, because I created a script that saves the current temperature every two seconds, so when the system shuts down I can see the last, and the highest I got from all the times was 62 °C, while the average from all the times it shut down was 57 °C from /sys/devices/platform/coretemp.0/hwmon/hwmon1/temp*_input and 51 °C from /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp and /sys/devices/virtual/hwmon/hwmon0/temp1_input. From my research, I understand that coretemp-0 is the temperature of the CPU itself, while the others (acpitz-virtual-0) are from underneath the base of the CPU.

The files under /sys and the command `sensors' tell me that only 80° would trigger a shutdown. I bought this laptop in 2013, and I have never seen it go beyond 6-°C:

Code: Select allsensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:        +41.0°C  (crit = +104.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0:       +48.0°C  (high = +80.0°C, crit = +90.0°C)
Core 2:       +47.0°C  (high = +80.0°C, crit = +90.0°C)

I have done a simple stress test by running `cat /dev/zero >/dev/null' on 8 terminals, together with `glxgears' and `supertuxkart' for half an hour, and my system did not shutdown, neither the temperature went beyond 6-°C. The HD temperature lives around 42 °C, according to `sudo smartctl -l scttemp /dev/sda'.

The output from `inxi -F':

Code: Select allSystem:    Host: localhost Kernel: 3.15.10-zen-686-pae i686 (32 bit) Desktop: Xfce 4.10.2
           Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 7.6

Mobo: Evolute model: SFX-65 Bios: American Megatrends v: 1.07.007 Test Only date: 04/12/2011

Debian Multimedia :: Transparency With Gnome-Terminal ?

Feb 25, 2010

When I was running it before, that was Debian as well, I was able to make my gnome-terminal window decorations completely transparent and/or gone - so the terminal appeared to be typing directly on the desktop.

The method I used before to accomplish this was pretty straightforward, these options could be found in the actual terminal's interface and menu options.

However, now, I get the following result:

Click on the image for a larger size image so as you're able to see the picture in more detail.

Debian Multimedia :: Command In The Terminal Can't Find Anything?

Aug 11, 2010

I just decided I'd give Google Chrome a try. Installed it via the google repository and it went fine.

However, every now and then it just vanishes from my menu and it can't be found again, also the command in the terminal can't find anything.

So, what's left is to reinstall it, and during reinstall it doesn't even whine about already being installed.

Anybody else with this matter? I am running 64-bit Squeeze.

Ubuntu :: Opening KMenu Spins Up NAS

May 30, 2011

I have a NAS in my home network which is automatically mounted using NFS on my desktop. There's only media files and documents on the NAS, no installed programs. None of those documents or media files appear in the Recently Used tab.

Whenever I click on the K-menu button of the taskbar, the menu does open but I cannot use it for a while; then I hear the harddisks in the NAS spin up and after a couple of seconds I can use the menu.

This is, of course, really annoying because it limits the speed at which I can use the K-menu. Why does it need access to the NAS anyway? Is there any way I can disable this?

Debian Multimedia :: Gnome-terminal Refuses To Open

Jan 30, 2015

I updated my Jessie system today. Nothing crucial in the apt-get list as far as I can see, perhaps it's unrelated. Anyway, now I cannot open the terminal any longer. Launching `gnome-terminal` shows the app name in the menu bar, a spinning wheel, and then after a few seconds nothing. It doesn't appear in the list of processes, either. I can still log into the text shell via ctrl-alt-F1.

I also added `LC_TIME="en_GB.UTF-8"` to `/etc/environment` to get rid of the American date format. Could it be the cause? I just tried to launch the terminal from the JVM. I get this output:

Code: Select all(process:2629): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
Using the fallback 'C' locale.
Error constructing proxy for org.gnome.Terminal:/org/gnome/Terminal/Factory0: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gnome.Terminal: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process org.gnome.Terminal exited with status 8

I will delete the environment variable again and reboot, but I wonder if I can still have the British date format?

I try to clear 'recently used documents' within the kmenu nothing happens, i.e. the list is not cleared, until I reboot or log out and back in again. It's an old issue but thought I'd just ask if there are some fix for this. There is another small flaw on my system as well which is with refreshing the content displayed in a directory using dolphin (and possibly other file-viewers/apps). For instance, if I unpack a tar/rar/zip package I have to manually refresh dolphin for having it display the new extracted folder.

Ubuntu :: Stream A Window From X As Opposed To Forwarding It Over SSH?

Jan 15, 2010

is it possible to stream a window from X, as opposed to forwarding it over SSH? I've used X-forwarding before so that I could ssh into another computer and open up a graphical program and have it show up on mine. But as far as I know, that window only opens on your computer, not on the computer the program is actually running on. Is it possible for me to open a window on my computer, and to sort of X stream it to another computer that has X so they can watch what I'm doing in that window?
