Ubuntu :: 10.4 Freezes When Shutting Off?

May 5, 2010

I have a laptop here with win 7 and decided to dual boot with ubuntu just for fun. Win 7 starts up, works, and shutdown/restarts fine. Ubuntu starts up, works great, but freezes at the splash screen showing "Ubuntu" with the bar scrolling when logging off to restart. Please help. I dont think holding down the power button to turn it off is too good. i searched google but found nothing =/

Edit: Shutting off works fine now... its just the restarting problem

Ubuntu :: CPU Fan Loud And System Shutting Down?

Sep 22, 2010

I recently had an OS system crash..WIndows XP. Purchased a new hard drive and installed Ubuntu 10.04. Everything installed as expected, however my CPU fan seems to be louder than usual. I did clean the fan and heat sink, but still running very loudly or fast I guess you could say. Also sometimes the PC shuts down when I try to open FireFox. Any ideas on what could be happening. This is an older machine using an Intel Celeron processor. Not sure of the speed, but I could look at the bios if that is needed.

Ubuntu :: Reboots Instead Of Shutting Down (maverick)?

Oct 11, 2010

Prior to this version of ubuntu my laptop (an old P4 gateway) shut down just fine. It acted fine in windows xp, and ubuntu 9.04, 9.10, and 10.04. Starting with my first shutdown after upgrading to maverick (as opposed to a fresh install, which is what I've done for every time I went to the new version before this), it just reboots the computer instead of shutting down.I've tried clicking the icon in the corner, I've tried pushing the power button and clicking shutdown on that screen, I've even tried shutting down from the command prompt, but each of these just reboots the computer.

Ubuntu :: Shutting Off Under Heavy Network Use?

Jun 5, 2011

so I've scoured the web and I can't seem to find anyone else having this issue. The issue:

Whenever my box is heavily using the internet, it seems to just wimp out. It shuts off and reboots.

When it's happened:I first deduced the connection to the network connection when I was trying to set up the system. When I tried an upgrade after the first time I installed the system, it crashed, leaving me with broken packages and all kinds of mess. So I decided to start over, and since I then had the network set up, I used the install latest version feature in the installer. If failed again. I battled issue this a couple of times before I opted to do updates in chunks instead of all at once. Success. Then I tried to download an entire website. You see, I had bought the computer to use as a test server for work. I ran wget, I believe. After a lot of recursive downloading, it decided to take another unauthorized break.

Now, I've got a minecraft server running too. It's been working pretty nicely, until lately. I've got a cron job set up to backup the server files with dropbox. Bad, bad, bad. The computer started acting up again, shutting off and rebooting. I figured it was having a hard time uploading to dropbox while simultaneously serving up the game. I moved the cron job from hourly to daily, and haven't had issues all day. Great. Until late tonight. It did it again while we were playing. It's relentless. So I went through the whole process of assessing damage. Luckily no damage. Then I went ahead and ran the dropbox script that didn't get to run while I was performing diagnostics.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Whole Cluster Freezes When One Of Nfs Server Freezes / Sort It?

Jun 27, 2011

We are having a cluster with couple of disk servers, compute nodes and a head node. Disk server is nfs mounted on all the compute and head nodes.
The problem is that if any of the disk servers hangs, it freezes rest of the cluster too which is dangerous. Ideally, cluster should not care about the hanged server and run without any problem except files from that server is not visible.
Is there any way I could avoid the problem of freezing cluster because of one hanged server?

General :: Execute Script Before Shutting Down In Ubuntu?

Aug 10, 2010

When I shut down my computer I want to show some pending tasks that I have to do before leaving the office...

I did a local application to manage those tasks, so basically I just want to run a command, and shut down after I kill the app executed.

I have already tried with these options:

/etc/gdm/PostSession/Default --> this works only when I select LogOut option instead Shutdown. /etc/rc0.d/K01mycustomscript --> execute script after X is killed $HOME/.bash_logout --> This looks like does nothing. ./app-to-run && sudo shutdown -h now --> Don't like it for 2 reasons, prompts for sudo password, and can't use my laptop shutdown button.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu :: Hibernate Does Not Work / Locks Up Before Even Shutting Down

Jan 24, 2010

I am using Xubuntu 9.10, 2.6.31-17-generic kernel. Video driver: "ati".I have only been using Linux for less than a year now but I have never been able to get hibernate mode working. Had the same problem on previous kernels and with Nvidia drivers. Tonight I tried removing all traces of any nvidia drivers hiding in my system (I recently changed to an ATI card), and also upgrading to grub 2. Still no luck.If I use the "hibernate" option from the shutdown menu, I just get a black screen with a blinking cursor. If I use s2disk, I get a little bit more of a hint, but still not very helpful. Then it just locks up after that. Power is still on and it never shuts down. I have a 6 gig swap partition set up that is enabled, so it is definitely not a swap issue.

I would get search results, but I would also get this nasty little message in the logbelow:"pynicotine.slskmessages.FileSearchResult unpack requires a string argument of length 4"After many of these messages show up in my log, Nicotine+ immediately closes.I have absolutely no idea what's happening here.

Ubuntu :: NTFS Data Lost After Shutting Down?

Jul 9, 2010

I have recently installed ubuntu 10.04 aside to my windows 7. One thing I tried out was to share firefox and thunderbird profiles. I have a separate NTFS partition for sharing stuff.Everything seemed to work fine. I had all my browsing history and bookmarks and emails shared nicely between windows and ubuntu. But now I have managed to lost data twice already (in one week time). The data itself is not so important (no need to recover it). But I'm just curious, why is this failing?

I use firefox ProfileManager (firefox -ProfileManager) to create a new profile. I did it in Ubuntu. I created a new folder on my Share partition and pointed profile there. Everything works fine. Profile is saved there and I can use it in Ubuntu. Now, after I shut down Ubuntu and go into Windows 7 (which was hibernated the whole time), the given folder is gone. And in Ubuntu, the folder is also gone. There are some other folders, which I created during my Ubuntu session, which are not visible in Windows, but are visible in Ubuntu.Does any one have any suggestions, how to make sharing data possible? Or why is my data getting lost.

Note:I was also getting rt2800_pci_MCU_Status related hardware error and then added rt2800 to the blacklist.cfg , but this does not seem have affected the wifi and the hanging issue.

Ubuntu :: Splash Screen Works Only While Shutting Down?

Feb 10, 2011

I can't see any boot splash while booting up, all I see is a black screen and then it directly lands on Login screen. But boot splash does work while shutting down the PC. My kernel version is 2.6.35-25.

I remember I tried to tweak grub.d (05_debian_theme specifically). But I just removed and reinstalled Grub2 and problem still persists. Also, I have compiled kernel 2.6.37, and boot splash works on it fine.

Note: I am talking about boot splash and not the boot-time wallpaper (I had modified 05_debian_theme to have wallpaper working). But again, everything seems as per default settings as I removed and reinstalled Grub2.

Debian :: What To Do After Improper Shutting Down?

Nov 6, 2010

About a year ago, I decided to remove the battery of my laptop when no mobility were required and the machine could use A/C, in order to --supposedly-- extend the battery's life. The system has suffered a couple of improper shutting downs within this year and, despite no important information was lost and I have not noticed a single problem, I don't know what to do after one. Yesterday, while I was testing some hard disk checking tools, I noticed that there was a damaged sector on the disk. Is it a result of these improper shutting downs? Should I force a file system check after one? Does the system performs a file system check when the error is critical? Should I check the lost+found directory after an improper shutting down --it's empty, by the way? What's the recommended way to proceed after an improper shutting down?
