Debian :: Localhost Servers Gracefully Shutting Down Upon System Shut Down
Jul 28, 2015Do active localhost server instances automatically gracefully shutdown upon system shut down?
View 1 RepliesDo active localhost server instances automatically gracefully shutdown upon system shut down?
View 1 RepliesSo, I installed debian and everything is nice, only one minor problem I haven't been able to solve is I think when I shutdown the computer running applications are being killled instead of terminated gracefully (if I open iceweasel, open a few tabs, close it and open it again only the homepage is opened, but if I open iceweasel, shutdown the computer, boot it and run iceweasel all the tabs are opened again, the same happens if iceweasel crashes).
I'm using debian version 6.0.2.1, a default install and no major configuration changes was done, I'm shutting down via gnome control-alt-del - shutdown.
Any help?
I have a strange problem on my system. When I turn off printer, system hang. Gdm/X exit and I can see a terminal screen with a lot of info (but I can not capture it, except taking a photo). I must press reset button. It's not all times, but at least 50% I shutdown printer. I was looking logs and I can not see any relevant. Maybe this (copy some sections of /var/log/messages, remove other not revelant):
Jul 7 19:43:34 dcr64 kernel: [341172.052076] usb 1-8: new high speed USB device number 7 using ehci_hcd

Sometimes I turn on printer to get a photocopy and turn off later, and system hand, so, it's not necesary to print or scan to get this error.
I have machine which I am using a server for all my office activities. We have fedora (11.0) installed in that system. When even power goes out system is getting shut-down abruptly. We have UPS for this system and some times UPS also runs out of power. Do we have any software, which monitors battery power and shutdown the system gracefully, when system knows that power is running out. I am using desktop machine, not a laptop. So I may some hardware like battery which runs fot sometime, even though there is no power. Then there will software which monitors and shut down the system gracfully.

Offlate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista.
Machine specifications:
Maker: Toshiba
Model: Satellite L305D-S5881
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor RM-70
3072 MB 800 MHz SDRAM
I don't want to open up my machine unnecessarily, if it isn't a hardware issue.
I am not sure how to verify the bit length of the machine and the OS and does it create a compatibility issue ?
Your advise would be highly appreciated.

I installed Fedora 12 and after I wantd to shut down the system. I waited but fedora not going to shut down. I got black screen with Power Down
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a flash drive that I regularly use on my laptop. If I unplug the flash drive without first unmounting it, I get a popup notification of a kernel failure (with diagnostics sent to kerneloops.org). Then, if I attempt to shut down the system via the console, it hangs on "The system is going down for halt/reboot NOW!" and doesn't actually shut down. Using Gnome's graphical System > Shut Down feature just logs me out and sends me to the login screen; the shutdown feature from there does nothing. I have to disconnect the power cord on the laptop in order to shut it down, and I don't like doing this.
System: 32-bit Debian Squeeze stable with kernel version 2.6.32-5-686, running Gnome 2.30.2, on an Acer Aspire 5570z.
I use Keepassx to store my passwords and keep the keyfile for my password database on the flash drive in question. I mention this just in case it helps determine what's causing the failure.
dmesg has quite a bit to say about this:
I recently had an OS system crash..WIndows XP. Purchased a new hard drive and installed Ubuntu 10.04. Everything installed as expected, however my CPU fan seems to be louder than usual. I did clean the fan and heat sink, but still running very loudly or fast I guess you could say. Also sometimes the PC shuts down when I try to open FireFox. Any ideas on what could be happening. This is an older machine using an Intel Celeron processor. Not sure of the speed, but I could look at the bios if that is needed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running named as a caching name server (package bind-9.7.3-1.fc14.x86_64 with config files exactly as supplied), and sometimes it does not shut down cleanly when I shut down the machine. The script /etc/ init.d/named tries to issue a "stop" command with rndc and that seems to fail most of the time; then it next uses the function killproc (defined in /etc/init.d/functions) which fails sometimes.I've hacked the named service script for now so that error messages are not hidden, but there is nothing reported.

When rebooting, the server now turns the monitor off, and I'm not sure if anything's loading. I see the initial dell splash screen, and hear the hard drive start to run, and then the monitor goes into standby.
I'm using Gnome and I'd like to still have the ability to reboot/shutdown from one particular account as well as root. How would I modify the chmod command to add this ability? Also, I have a few users who just will hold the power button in to shutdown the machine. How can I keep them from doing this?// Pruned from the vintage 2007 Prevent a non-root user from shutting down, rebooting or suspend the system thread. View 2 Replies View RelatedAbout a year ago, I decided to remove the battery of my laptop when no mobility were required and the machine could use A/C, in order to --supposedly-- extend the battery's life. The system has suffered a couple of improper shutting downs within this year and, despite no important information was lost and I have not noticed a single problem, I don't know what to do after one. Yesterday, while I was testing some hard disk checking tools, I noticed that there was a damaged sector on the disk. Is it a result of these improper shutting downs? Should I force a file system check after one? Does the system performs a file system check when the error is critical? Should I check the lost+found directory after an improper shutting down --it's empty, by the way? What's the recommended way to proceed after an improper shutting down?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI would like a program that will auto shutdown my Linux machine when it detects low power or X amount of minutes remaining on UPS. I don't have NIC's in my UPS's so that's why I am asking... Not even sure it is possible for the Linux machine to detect when it switches to AUX power.

Everything works fine, but the system is not able to automatically power off and I have to manually switch it off.
How could I fix this behavior?
My system just shut itself down as I was using it. I'd like to try to understand why.
First, I noticed there are 1 to 4 messages per second in my messages.1 through messages.4 files in /var/log going back to September 27. It probably started before then, but I don't have older logs.
There almost nothing else in the messages log but these messages, millions of them. They look like these:

Then just before shutdown, there are a few dozens of these:

And then right at the end, a switch to runlevel 0. I did not initiate that. Something else did. And finally a dbus-daemon segfault.

What other logs can I look at?
I am using a program that reads in data from a serial port and then sends that data out over a TCP connection. The problem I'm having is that the only way I know to exit the program is to do a 'kill PID', but doing this means the program doesn't go through the motions of closing the TCP connection properly so I have to wait some random period of time for the port to free itself or else when I try to start it back up it tells me that it can't bind to the specified port. The general structure of the program is as follows
Code:
int main(){
// initialize some stuff

I just installed 11.3 and Gnome yesterday and all went well except that the system will not shut down, it simply reboots. I've tried shutting it down using halt and shutdown now as root and each time the machine reboots. I didn't have this problem with 11.1.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am using lenny on an Intel 5200 dual core machine with 2 GB RAM
The problem facing is sometimes The dialog box "The sustem will immediately shut down" is shown and goes to power off. I thinks it is connected with a hardware problem. But It is difficult to trace out what is the problem and in which part of the hardware it is.
The motherboard of this computer was complaint and it was replaced by the company (It is seen than it is the same motherboard with one IC replaced)
The problem is difficult to identify since it is not happening every time. When the service persons are here it is working fine. But when i works with the computer seriously, the problem arises - mostly in night. I have checked the power, voltage etc - everything fine. Also it is in linux, service persons don't pay attentions to solve the problem.
Is it the problem with RAM? It is a new RAM. Even if it is bad I can't replace it because it is working! and in windows (service persons check it with windows only)
I have an online server which I can not reach any more !
Code:
normally works just fine but now there is a timeout...
Code:
Status of csf:csf and lfd have been disabled, use 'csf -e' to enable Status of lfd:lfd is stopped. The only thing I have is a management-interface with a command prompt(luckily !) You can see that any firewall is disabled.
Still I can not reach my server. Not through webmin via the public address, not through the VPN on the private address (10.10.0.1). So no webmin. I cannot reach my server via ssh. I cannot ping my server on the public IP-address from my client.
What else besides the firewall can restrict my access to my server ?
I've just installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 on an old laptop. I would like the screen to automatically shut off after, say, a minute of inactivity.
- After some time, the monitor blanks but the backlight does not power down.
- I do not have a gui installed, and do not want to install one since this is a server. Most of the solutions I've found involve running X or KDE.
- It's an old laptop and the lid switch is broken, so closing the lid won't work.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an installation of Fedora 10 that has been running wonderfully for months, ever since I bombed my 9 installation trying to install Apache Tomcat (I really just wanted Apache, live and learn). I finally decided to brave the attempt to install Apache 2.2 again because I have a little more instruction to go by. Apparently not enough to deal with this snag though, at least not the way I want.
Install went fine, but I couldn't start the service. Following the error trail I found that it was binding IPv6 to port 80 and wouldn't allow any other ip or localhost to use it. I disabled IPv6, don't need it, I'll learn about it later.
