Debian :: Ecryptfs-setup-private Enter Login Passphrase: And Won't Accept

Sep 17, 2010

I just installed ecryptfs (debian Lenny). However, when I try to run it (as normal user), I get the following
$ ecryptfs-setup-private Enter your login passphrase: And it wont accept any password (naturally since this is the first time I'm running it).

Ubuntu :: Making Private Folder Appear With Ecryptfs-utils

May 7, 2011

I have a fresh install of Kubuntu 11.04 and I already have the lastest ecryptfs-utils installed. I have the ".Private" folder but not the "Private" folder.

When I try to set it up I get this error:

Quote:

$ ecryptfs-setup-private
ERROR: wrapped-passphrase file already exists, use --force to overwrite.

How do I get my "Private" folder to appear? I don't think I should just be throwing my stuff into ".Private" and I don't want to have to see all the hidden folders all the time either. Should I use the --force argument, and what would that do?

Ubuntu :: Ssh And - Enter Password To Unlock The Private Key

Oct 30, 2010

Since upgrading to Meerkat, I have been getting a pop-up window with the message "Enter password to unlock the private key" every time I attempt to ssh into a server that does NOT use password authentication. I know some people like the remember password "feature", but I prefer just a plain unadulterated ssh session in a terminal. Does anyone know how to stop this message?

So far I have unsucessfully tried:

None of the above worked - and I was sure to log out and back in before testing the behavior.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Ran some updates, finally got around to rebooting. When I rebooted, It came up with Some errors about missing files. Came to discover my home directory was not decrypted. I simply had a readme file that said to run "encryptfs-mount-private". When I do it doesn't tell me the passphrase is incorrect, it tells me

Code:

Inserted auth tok with sig [xxxxxxxxxx] into the user session keyring You do not own that encrypted directory and I do own it. If I put in a different pass it tells me it's incorrect, I'm logging in fine, but my home directory is remaining encrypted.

In Fedora there is a utility that caches your ssh_passphrase for a limited amount of time, is there a utility like that in Centos?

Ubuntu :: Logging Into Netgear Router Setup After Passphrase Change?

Jun 29, 2010

I changed the passphrase in my Netgear WNR3500 router. I got the teenager's win7 netbook back online (wireless) no prob by simply changing the security key in windoze and it didn't effect my connectivity but when I attempt to enter my router setup by entering my local IP nothing happens, no response at all. I've rebooted twice and my connection is still very solid but I cannot access the router setup. The ONLY change I made was in the router's "passphrase".Not a big emergency at this point I suppose but I need to know what I need to change in Linux? Or to rephrase, in windoze7 passphrase=security key. In Linux?I can just reset the silly thing I guess but was kind of hoping I wouldn't have to and besides I anticipate the same trouble when setting the passphrase afterward.

Ubuntu :: Auto Mount Encrypted Volume Using Login Passphrase?

May 3, 2010

I recently installed Ubunutu 10.04 Netbook Remix onto a Dell Vostro A90. During install I selected "Require my password to log in and to decrypt my home folder", and this is working great.

What I would like to figure out, is how to have a second encrypted volume that lives on my SD Card that is also decrypted automatically upon login.

I've tried a variety of things, but they all require me to re-enter my password at some point during the boot/login, once for user login and the other time to decrypt/mount the volume. I am trying to avoid this, and hopefully will only have to enter my password once. Maybe I can piggyback on the default Ubunutu home directory decryption and make it all appear seamless?

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Setup A 2nd Ftp Account For Own Private Use

Jan 12, 2010

i followed this guide, [URL] a few days ago and set up an sftp server no problem. The user can only see what is in there home folder which is only the examples file which is empty. Today i went to set up a 2nd ftp account for my own private use. I have it set up and all, followed exactly what he said the 2nd time around and my 2nd user is not chroot'd. I can explor the contents of the whole drive.

My fist user that works fine is "ftpuser" and the group is "sftponly" just like in the guide. My 2nd user is named "ftptaylor". Now i did have an ftp server set up with vsftpd where i had the same ftpuser account in a different group, but it was jailed to /home/ftpuser. I cant tell you how i did it, i followed a number of guides untill one worked. But could it be that the guide above does not in face jail the users, but just that my user was already jail'd?

It's not that I've never tried, I have - I've just never got it working. That to me is an almost alien concept as I am a tinkerer at heart and rarely stop until something is working the way I'd like it to. I get the principle of what's going on but I've always had a mental block about it.

Ubuntu Security :: Ecryptfs Doesn't Auto-decrypt With Auto-login

Jan 6, 2011

I recently installed 32bit maverick and wanted to make it login automatically. I tried enabling auto login from Admin > Login but that didnt work and I was still prompted for my password. Then I went to Users & Groups and changed the password option to Do Not ask for password at login now after I reboot, the user list is shown (only 1 user) and it doesnt ask for password after I click on my username.

However, then it gives a few errors (as i vaguely recall):

1. cannot load .ICE directory in my home directory
2. some error 256 about a gconf-sanity-2 file
3. nautilus cannot load my home directory etc

and then it gets stuck without loading anything (blank wallpaper). i ve tried navigating to my home directory using Alt F2, gksudo nautilus and my home dir contents are encrypted by the ecryptfs (there is a readme.txt file and a shortcut). i have tried to decrypt but it doesnt work... i ve also tried to start/stop gdm, and startx but nothing works. if i stop gdm, then the prompt doesnt recognize my password and keeps on rejecting the commands i enter... I think this has something to do with the home dir not being decrypted due to the dont ask for paswd option... how can i disable the dont ask for pwd without the gui (i can access my / by booting through an external usb).

How long it will take for this package to reach stretch from unstable?

Ubuntu Servers :: Setup The Necessary Public/private Keys To Use In FileZilla?

Jan 26, 2010

I installed OpenSSH via tasksel and am using Webmin for administration. I'd like to be able to SSH externally and want to setup the necessary public/private keys to use in FileZilla. In Webmin, under Servers > SSH Server I can click 'Host Keys' and see an RSA key. Is this the public or private key for my server? Do I need to copy this into a text file to import it into FileZilla on my remote PC (that I want to connect from)? Is that all that needs to be done (aside from opening the port on my router/firewall)? Or, is there an automated way to set this up via Webmin?

Ubuntu :: ERROR: Encrypted Private Directory Is Not Setup Properly

Feb 4, 2010

I'm currently running Koala on a Dell Latitude D630. I've been with Ubuntu since Hardy, so I have some experience, but this is beyond me. Basically, I was at school, closed my laptop, and bicycled home. When I opened it up at home, I saw a blank screen. When I tried to reboot, I was told that the disk couldn't be mounted. When I boot a LiveCD, I can see my two disk partitions (/ and /home) as "16GB Filesystem" and "95GB Filesystem". The 16GB system can't be mounted, and I'm pretty sure is fragged. I tried reinstalling Ubuntu, figuring that would fix it, but no luck- it starts fine, but it gets about halfway through and then says it can't install the files.

The machine is still under a service contract with Dell, so swapping out the HD itself isn't such a big deal. It would be nice to get my data, though. I can successfully mount the 95GB (/home) system. I then see two folders "dan/" and "lost+found/". I can't enter the "dan" folder because I don't have permission. Opening a terminal and navigating to /media/95GB Filestystem/dan/ works if I "sudo su root" first, but not as "ubuntu" In the dan/ folder, all I see is "Access-your-private-data.desktop" (because my /home directory is encrypted) and "README.txt". The README says to run the command "encryptfs-mount-private".

When I do that, however, I just get the message ERROR: Encrypted private directory is not setup properly I tried putting my decryption password immediately after the decrypt command, a la: encryptfs-mount-private mypasswordgoeshere but with no change in results. The one ray of sunshine in all this is that I backup my /home directory to an external every week or two. So the actual data loss is not catastrophic. But it *has* been a busy week, so I would really like to recoup that data, since it includes little things like the first chapter of my dissertation, and the job negotiation emails in my .evolution folder.

OpenSUSE :: Setup Private Git Repository With Restricted Rights On Server Without Root Access?

May 15, 2011

a friend of mine is doing a small website-project in school (group of ~6 people). They want to use git as VCS and need acces to a server. I have an account on the server from university, but - of course - no root access.

I could create private/public keys for them, to SSH into my account, but I don't want them to have this power I found 'git-shell', which seems to be used for restricted access with git (although I'm not sure whether I understood the functionality).

My question is: Is it possible to configure SSH keys in that way, that the server runs them (and only them) in git-shell in a specified directory (using ~/.ssh/{config,authorized_keys})?

So that they can
- log in with their SSH key
- use git, execute scripts etc.
- use git push/pull from their private+school PC
- work only in a specific directory (like chroot) eg. ~/web-project/
