I just finished installing 10.10 on my pc. the problem is that i cant login to the desktop i enter the password, the login sound plays and im stuck looking at the wallpaper. nothing else. i tried logging in safe mode and it worked. how can i get it to work normally?
pc specs:
Pentium 4 2.6 ghz
512mb ram
ati radeon 9600 graphics card
And i installed it using wubi.
I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.
I have no idea what happened to my OS(ubuntu10.04).it doesn't give me any option to enter my login name & passwd.i just get a blank(default) login screen.last time when it worked,i was trying to install GTK+2.8,but due to my mistake i deleted glib using cmd (sudo apt-get purge glib)and after that i even tried to launch terminal but it failed to launch.also tried to play media files using vlc but it didn't work.so i tried to restart my os and finally got stuck in the problem.i have no idea what to do,please help.Is there any cmd to see what problem occurred or which package is missing.

After switching between gradient to colour the system crashed logged me out and upon logging in it simply runs endlessly accessing my harddisk but never actually loading the desktop.I can kill X and reboot, but it's the same problem waiting for me on restart. I really don't want to re-install or delete users (to put it in context, I just spent 3 days trying to install Fedora because Anaconda doesn't know how to install GRUB correctly).

The only problem (so far) is that Network Manager requires you to enter your password every time you login to unlock the password keyring. I want to disable this.
I think some distros disable the prompt by using the login password to unlock the keyring, but I use auto-login (if that makes a difference).
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04LTS. I'm trying to configure my chat accounts. But after entering username and password, it is asking "Enter password to unlock your login keyring". I have entered my login password. But it is saying that "The password you use to log in to your computer no longer matches that of your login keyring."
View 4 Replies View RelatedIt happens like 50% of my Suse 11.2 startups, when I type in my password at login screen and hit enter, Gnome do not start, i can only see the green blank screen,or sometimes it start to show only my custom wallpaper and nothing more, when i try ctrl+alt+backspacex2 and login again everything seems to work fine, but what could be wrong ? is it a hardware issue ? Moreover, sometimes when I want to shutdown my laptop and click the shutdown button, suse do logout, but instead of turning off the laptop , it brings me to login screen, clicking the shutdown button at login screen makes my hdd lamp blink and thats all.

I have installed CC,CLC,SC,NC and a client and logged into thje user interface using my browser for the first time with bith username and passwd as admin and downloaded the credentials.But now as I try to login with the same username and passwd, it says that its an invalid login. I understand we have to change the password on the first login but i don't remember doing the same.
I tried recover password option and gave the user name as admin and email address as my gmail id. It says that I have to follow the instructions sent to the mail, but there is no mail sent I have done it like 5 or 6 times with different mail ids
I'm seeing really bad user login format under a standard installation and am wondering why ubuntu does this as default. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.
been using 11.2 with KDE on a Sony laptop since 11.2 was released always ran perfect suddenly I can't login, I get to the login screen type in password it begins to load my desktop, then fails and dumps me back to the login screen I can login as root, all my stuff is there (under /home/me) I tried changing my password, no luck I went to run level 3 and there I can login just fine seems to be something with my KDE profile

I've set up password-less login for user1 on a Ubuntu machine to login automatically into a Fedora box using the publickey authentication method. Everything is working smoothly. Now, there is a user2 on Fedora but he does not have an account on Ubuntu.

Predictably neither scp or sftp work either. I have several questions as a result.
1.Is the SSH server rejecting user2 login because I am inadvertently using user1 keys (as I am logged in as user1) ?
2. Do I need to have a user2 account on Ubuntu and public/private key authentication setup with Fedora for user2 to be able to login ?
3. Is there a method I can use to password login as user2 from Ubuntu to Fedora (even though there is no user2 account on Ubuntu) AND still keep password-less login for user1 or do I have to have password-less login for both ?
At present the only way to access the user2 account from Ubuntu is to SSH using the user1 account and then su to user2.

Black screen after ubuntu loading screen. So I googled for a while but lost my temper so I loaded my ubuntu cd formatted the disk and installed ubuntu over again. This time i get to login screen and after login all i see is the wallpaper and mouse cursor. I can move the cursor but I cant right-click or anything. Ubuntu works perfectly in safe mode though!
A difference a noticed from the first time I installed was that the first time: I could choose to install proprietary drivers for my graphic card and wifi network card whith "Jockey". Now i cant and I have no wifi internet connection! I dont know how the graphic card works but apparently its using some kind of default driver as i can see things how to make my ubuntu work as good as before

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe problem is after I change wallpaper, logout and log back in the wallpaper reverts back to the previous wallpaper. Here's what I did from fc10 64-bit:
From System->Preferences->Look And Feel->Appearance choose Background tab.
Frolm Background tab click Add button and browse for the .jpg in ~/Wallpaper
Now wallpaper changes but doesn't persist on logout. Could a folders or config file have the wrong permissions?
When you first boot into fedora, it asks you for a user and password, and the background is the default blue fedora wallpaper.. how do you change that?

In a quick appeareance there also a sentence: "permission denied". I've tried to browse this forum and seems no answer. I still can access the terminal though using alt+ctrl+F2 but i don't know how to access the desktop because when i hit alt+F7 it come back to login screen. how can i fix it? But this is persistently annoying, tho not a deal-breaker. Currently running latest Ubuntu 10.04, fully updated. Everything works fine, even better than any previous releases. No problems worth mentioning. But this is annoying, so anyway, here I am.
Installed Miro, loads up and runs fine, can download no probs. The section at the top where it says "account", and you sit over it and it drops down a window for your login details (username, password) so as to recall your personal settings, preferences, etc, but it's not working. By this, I mean the drop-down appears, but clicking the mouse in the window on the lines does not seem to register with it, you can't enter anything. Annoying, slightly frustrating. Earlier today I was setting up ssh on a new computer. I modified permissions on the Passwd folder to complete the setup. I few hours later when I went to sudo something in the terminal I received the notice of an incorrect password (after using sudo prior to this), even though it was typed correctly.
I tried to restart the computer to solve the issue, but was met with an Authentication Failed message, regardless of the user I tried to log in with. I was hoping I could log in with recovery mode but was unable to do that as well. I have searched a substantial amount and have not found a solution. Could this be an issue with permissions on either the Passwd or Shadow folder? If so, could these be changed if I ran a Live CD?

The cursor is blinking but I am unable to enter the pass phrase; the only thing I can do is press the power button to shutdown. Even if I leave the PC running for a hour I can't type anything.
I know how to resolve the problem if I am able to login.
