Debian Configuration :: Install Wireless Driver Not Included With Kernel?

Jun 16, 2011

I'm running Debian wheezy on a Toshiba NB505 and I've noticed that the wireless connectivity can be painfully slow at times. I know it's not our home network because my desktop flies (running Windows).Currently, I have the driver from this guide installed. I went to Realtek's site to download the latest driver for this wireless card (RTL8188CE, the Linux/UNIX version) thinking maybe this more up-to-date driver would operate better than the one used in the guide above. Is there a possible way to install this driver, or should I just stick with the current driver I'm using from the guide above?

Debian :: Why Isn't Stable Release Of Package X Included In Lenny

Jun 30, 2011

I have found some stable releases of packages I use which are included in Debian stable to be outdated. For example: I use Kdevelop. I absolutely love it. Checking Kdevelop.org says that latest stable release is 4.2.3.However on my system, the latest stable package found is 4.0.1 In my sources list I've selected to use only stable packages:

deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main
deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free

BTW, I assume this is how I only get stable packages ? Why is it that although there are newer stable releases of Kdevelop, the latest (stable) found on Debian is 4.0.1 ? Is there something I can do in order to include those newer stable releases, other than downloading the source from the wesbite and building/installing ? I really like the way Debian handles it's packages, and I understand that Debian has it's own ways of doing things.

Debian Multimedia :: Getting The Subtitles To Be Included In The File Dump.vob?

Jul 1, 2011

Doing this: mplayer dvd://1 -v -dumpstream -dumpfile dump.vob Gives me all the audio tracks, but not the subtitles. How can I go about getting the subtitles to be included in the file dump.vob? I've tried something like: mplayer dvd://1 -v -sid 5 -dumpstream -dumpfile dump.vob (where -sid 5 was the correct subtitle) but this does not work. I'm going to use mencoder to make an .avi file (with subtiutles, obviously), so I could, as a last resort, use some other program that extracts the subtitles (suggestions?).

Debian :: What To Choose In Reportbug

Jun 2, 2010

i am currently testing squeeze and i found a bug, so i thought i'd try out reportbug, but i am at a loss at what to choose here, because: i don't know what package it is, and if i check "other", as suggested in such a case, it wants me to pick from a list of categories none of which fit.here is, in short, the bug:after the system has beenresumed from suspend, it freezes at some random time later, maybe immediately, maybe hours later.

alt+print+k and ctrl+alt+f1 do not work, alt+print+reisub works.every freeze is anticipated by a random process hogging 100% cpu, then the whole system becomes gradually unresponsive within a minute or so.so how do i categorize this?my least objectionable candidates were "general" and "base", but as i understandit "general" is for overall flaws in design rather than specific unexpectedness, and i don't really know what "base" means.

Debian :: Choose Keyboard Model In Gnome Shell?

Jul 24, 2011

I've recently upgraded my squeeze to sid, then installed gnome shell as default window manager.

1. Gnome shell was normal until yesterday, I upgraded new packages up to date, then I cannot log into gnome shell any more (however, fallback mode is normal). It shows a sad computer screen with message "Oh no, something has gone wrong". The only thing I can do is pressing the logout button to log out.

2. Debian is running on my thinkpad T60p, and I can choose keyboard model in Gnome2, but I can't find any options in the system setting in Gnome shell to change keyboard layout for model IBM T60/R60.

Debian :: Wireless Gets Disconnected Right When It Tells Me To Choose My Method Of Connecting To The Net And Installation

May 6, 2011

Unfortunately, when I try to install Debian off the DVD, the wireless gets disconnected right when it tells me to choose my method of connecting to the net. It then gives me three choices of connecting - wired, unknown, and wireless. I must be missing something, because when I choose wireless, it says it fails, and cannot find anything to connect to. I input the SSID and password manually and it says its not there. So I quit the install and go back to the desktop and reconnect no problems.

Debian Installation :: When Choose Resume Partitioning Installer Then Freezes At Detect File Systems

Dec 1, 2014

I'm trying to install Debian Jessie beta2 on a UEFI laptop. Because my harddrive needs specific alignment I've made beforehand in gdisk:EFI System Partition of 100mib at /dev/sda1/boot partition of 512mib at /dev/sda2/ (because I expect the installer to want a /boot too for an encrypted device)rest of harddrive reserved for root at /dev/sda3

Debian Hardware :: Bios To Find Out That Only 2 Settings To Choose Between "off" And "last State"

Mar 7, 2011

I bought my previous laptop without thinking about whether linux would run or not, I ran into a lot of ton of trouble and had to use ndiswrapper for the wireless and I had to wait year before a patch came so the monitor could be used, and 1 year before it ran stable (back then I used ubuntu). I have a medion computer, their consumer service are very nice, however I fried the hard drive, and when I got the computer back the wireless card weren't visible from linux... I then went into the bios to find out that there were only 2 settings to choose between "off" and "last state", and last state apparently also meant off... in windows both off and last state could be turned into "on" by clicking Fn + F7... but this did not change the bios setting and therefore linux wireless were still off (I know it sounds strange).

Anyway My girlfriend needs a windows computer for gaming (and all of out computers run only linux with the exception of mine which dual boots), so I have desided to buy a new one. My main question is this: which laptop manufactures play nice with linux... I have heard only bad things about dell costumer service, and I want to buy a laptop that I can return w/o to much hassle if it doesn't perform as I am hoping...

My second question is, is there any way to check whether the graphics card and such are compatible with linux ahead of time, (w/o acualy buying it where you can do lspci and then submit it to some webpage) 3rd are there anyway to check whether the fn + key buttons and webcamp works ahead of time (this is only of minor importance, as I find that generally the sound up and brightness up/down works, and that's the most useful)
